  • Patent number: 5020567
Abstract: A valve is installed into an underground conduit to control drainage of water through that conduit. The drainage control valve includes a perforated plate across the conduit. The latter plate is formed with a peripheral groove rectangular in cross section and a hollow tube made of flexible material is inserted into this groove to seal the joint between the plate and the inner surface of the conduit. A flap also made of flexible material is applied against the upstream surface of the plate and is formed with a peripheral edge taper whereby pressure applied on the flap by water upstream of the drainage valve forces the edge taper against the upstream plate surface to form a sealed joint between these flap and plate. The upper portion of the flap is attached to the upper portion of the plate through screw and nut assemblies. These assemblies traverse rigid washers inserted in respective holes made in the flap.

  • Patent number: 5005314
Abstract: The disclosure herein describes a device for use in conducting sap collected from maple trees to a sap-processing unit, particularly during sunny days; it comprises a tubular member in which sap is contained and conveyed to the sap-processing unit and a parasol mounted exteriorly of the tubular member for preventing high angled sun rays to be absorbed in the tubular member and to affect the sap flowing during the day but allowing low angled sun rays to be absorbed in part of the tubular member to allow frozen sap to defreeze and flow in the morning. The parasol consists of a semi-cylindrical elongated member mounted over the tubular member and is spaced therefore so as to define an air chamber between the tubular member and the semi-cylindrical member.

  • Patent number: 4999065
Abstract: A high-security identification card is produced in a system in which a photograph from a video camera is converted to digital data and reproduced with high-fidelity on a video display screen. Other images, such as signatures and fingerprints, can be treated in a similar manner using either a video camera or a CCD (charge-coupled device). After processing, the video information is displayed on the screen where it is combined with variable data typed in from a keyboard. The digital data from the terminal is fed into a laser printer that prints the portrait and any desired alphanumeric information on a paper sheet. The paper is then laminated, under heat and pressure, between two sheets of transparent thermoplastic material, at a temperature and pressure sufficient to cause the plastic material to penetrate the interstices between the fibers of the paper card and form a unitary structure that cannot be delaminated without destruction of the identifying data.

  • Patent number: 4970755
Abstract: The apparatus for trimming a layer of back fat off a pork shoulder butt comprises a frame as well as a flat, flexible and arcuate cutting blade with two ends respectively attached to a pair of blade holders pivotally mounted onto the frame. A conveyor, a set of upper gripper belts, and a rotative roller pass the shoulder butt through the blade to trim off the layer of fat. The rotative roller has a diameter gradually decreasing along its longitudinal axis from each end of the roller toward the center thereof to define an annular, concave outer surface. This roller is mounted onto the frame adjacent the arcuate blade on the outside of the curve this blade defines but with a distance separating the annular surface and the blade to enable passage of the layer of fat between them. The annular outer surface of the roller is formed with teeth to engage the fat whereby rotation of the roller forces the shoulder butt through the blade.

  • Patent number: 4969736
Abstract: A system for measurement of a distance to a target. Light is emitted from a multi-mode laser and coupled to a sensor assembly. A portion of the light at the sensor assembly is reflected back into the fiber optic cable from which it came. The other portion of the light from the sensor assembly is projected towards the target. Light is reflected from the target and also connected into the optical cable as a target beam. The target beam and the reference beam then are connected through a path of variable length. When the target beam and the reference beam interface with one another, the path length is determined to be equal to the length to the target.

  • Patent number: 4946250
Abstract: A wavelength filter is integrated to a single-mode optical fiber capable of propagating a light signal and comprising a longitudinal and opaque outer jacket enveloping the fiber. This fiber is stripped of its jacket on a given length thereof to obtain a non-jacketed length of optical fiber. The so produced non-jacketed fiber length is formed with first and second concatenated biconical tapers separated from each other by a given distance and each having a given profile. By appropriately selecting the distance separating the two tapers and the given profile thereof, the filter will enable transmission of a first, predetermined wavelength of the propagated light signal while it will stop a second, predetermined wavelength of the signal. A method of integrating such a filter to a single-mode optical fiber is also proposed.

Abstract: A medical intravenous line coupling device can be secured to standard "y" shaped junction tube. The device can comprise a single member which fits with the junction tube and has passages shaped to receive and secure with the junction arm. A "b" shaped slot can be provided in the member for that purpose. The container can have a menas for receiving a liquid for injection into the intravenous system, such as a receptacle, and a means for allowing liquid flow from the receiver into the junction tube, such as a needle. The device may include a second member which has a passage to interact with the junction arm. One member can fit about the other and be rotatably mounted hereto. The junction arm can be received by the two members when they are in a first position relative to one another, and can be secured when the members are moved relative to each other. With the two member assembly, the receiver, such as the receptacle, and the liquid flow means, such as the needle, can be mounted to the first or second member.
