  • Patent number: 6025890
Abstract: A display system includes a reflective mode spatial light modulator for producing a pattern of polarized light, a light source for illuminating the spatial light modulator, and an optics arrangement. The optics arrangement includes a beam splitter element having a transparent substrate with a front face and a back face. The front face supports a beam splitter coating acting as a beam splitter. The back face supports a polarizer layer. The polarizer layer and the transparent substrate are configured to be refractive index matched to prevent the reflection of light at the interface between the transparent substrate and the polarizer layer. The beam splitter element is positioned in the optical path between the light source and the spatial light modulator in order to polarize and direct light from the light source to the spatial light modulator.

  • Patent number: 5986378
Abstract: A device such as an electric motor, an electric generator, or a regenerative electric motor includes a rotor arrangement and a stator arrangement. The stator arrangement has a dielectric electromagnet housing and at least one energizable electromagnet assembly including an overall amorphous metal magnetic core. The overall amorphous metal magnetic core is made up of a plurality of individually formed amorphous metal core pieces. The dielectric electromagnet housing has core piece openings formed into the electromagnet housing for holding the individually formed amorphous metal core pieces in positions adjacent to one another so as to form the overall amorphous metal magnetic core. The device further includes a control arrangement that is able to variably control the activation and deactivation of the electromagnet using any combination of a plurality of activation and deactivation parameters in order to control the speed, efficiency, torque, and power of the device.

  • Patent number: 5976083
Abstract: A personal fitness monitoring device and a method for assessing the fitness of an individual as the individual exercises includes using a pedometer to determine and output data representing the locomotion of the individual. A heart rate monitor determines and outputs data representing the heart rate of the individual. A determination arrangement calculates the fitness of the individual as the individual exercises using personal data provided by the individual in combination with the data outputs of the pedometer and the heart rate without requiring a predetermined exercise regime. In one embodiment, the pedometer calculates a distance traveled by the individual using personal data provided by the individual. The personal fitness monitoring device may further include a user interface for communicating with the user. The user interface uses a single user controlled selecting mechanism to select a desired one of various user selectable options.

  • Patent number: 5966856
Abstract: An illuminated sign or light box includes a face having face material forming a desired face design with at least a portion of the desired face design comprising a light transmitting, substantially non-diffusing window. At least one tubular fluorescent light bulb is positioned behind the face. A substantially specular reflector which serves as a mirror is positioned behind the fluorescent light bulb. The reflector has a predetermined shape and the fluorescent light bulb is positioned such that when the sign or light box is viewed by a viewer from a predetermined viewing region, the viewer either directly sees the fluorescent light bulb or directly sees a substantially specular reflection of the fluorescent light bulb through the light transmitting, substantially non-diffusing window portions of the sign face.

  • Patent number: 5952988
Abstract: A display includes a plurality of individually electrically controllable pixels. Each pixel has a layer of light controlling medium extending over a predetermined area of the pixel. The light controlling medium is responsive to electrical fields directed through the area of the light controlling medium for controlling the light passing through the pixel as a predetermined function of the magnitude of the electric field. Each pixel has an electric field directing arrangement for directing an electric field through the layer of light controlling medium of the pixel. The electric field for each pixel is controllably variable over the area of the light controlling medium of the pixel such that the light passing through the area of the light controlling medium of the pixel is controlled in a manner that varies over the area of the pixel depending on the variable electric field.

  • Patent number: 5865945
Abstract: A handle for use with a pressure sensitive film applicator tool includes a main body having a shape that configured to be easily gripped by a users hand. The applicator tool is a specifically configured double edged squeegee designed to apply pressure sensitive films to a substrate. The applicator tool has two blade portions formed on opposite longitudinal edges of the applicator tool. The handle includes a receiving arrangement for receiving one of the blade portions of the applicator tool. The handle also includes a grip arrangement for gripping the applicator tool and holding the applicator tool within the handle when one of the blade portions of the applicator tool is positioned within the receiving arrangement of the handle.
