Abstract: An actuating system for operating transverse doors of a railroad hopper car. The mechanism includes an operating member which is coupled to a door or doors of the car by a shaft and a linkage which couples a power source to the operating member, where the operating member rotates to move the door away from the hopper. The mechanism can operate doors which open in opposed direction with a single power source. The mechanism can be used in new car construction, and can be retrofitted onto existing hopper cars.
Abstract: A mechanism for selectively operating hopper doors of a railroad car. A fulcrum coupled to the operating cylinder includes channels within which levers can be selectively activated to open specific doors of the car, thus allowing the contents of the railcar to be sequentially emptied. The mechanism can be installed on railcars having either transverse hopper doors or longitudinal hopper doors.
Abstract: A door position indicating mechanism for use with a railroad car. The mechanism includes a shaft which extends across the longitudinal direction of the car. An offset section of the shaft has a roller which contacts a lever which is shifted by an air cylinder when operating the door mechanism. At least one counterweight biases the roller into constant contact with the door operating lever. Indicators are mounted on either end of the shaft such that the position of the doors can be noted from either side of the railroad car.
Abstract: The present invention teaches a unique drive mechanism for use in a hand held fastener driving tool. The driving mechanism comprises a pair of opposing cams coaxially positioned upon a common shaft. One of the cams is motor driven and rotatable about the common shaft but not axially translatable while the other cam is axially translatable but non-rotatable. Rotation of the rotatable cam by the motor causes the non-rotatable axially translatable cam to compress a compressible spring assembly, storing potential energy therein. Simultaneously, a driver activation cable, wrapped about the rotatable cam's periphery, unwraps thereby raising a fastener driver to its driving configuration. Upon release of the rotatable cam from the motor drive, the potential energy stored within the spring assembly causes reverse rotation of the rotatable cam thereby rewinding the drive cable about the rotatable cam's periphery and driving the fastener driver, whereby the driver drives a fastener into a workpiece.

Abstract: Methods and apparatuses for controlling bladder discharge in a patient are described. The method includes coupling a first electrode to a sacral ventral root of the patient and coupling a second electrode to a sacral dorsal root of the patient. The method may be applied to spinal cord injured patients without dorsal root section.

Abstract: An elongated strip merchandiser for displaying merchandise from the front end of a retail store shelf. The strip contains a plurality of article retaining areas each having a cutout section which forms an upwardly extending tongue having an article-holding shelf behind the tongue, along with a locking surface opposite the tongue. A strip hanging portion is included, having an aperture where an attachment device may be fastened to suspend the strip from the edge of a store shelf.
Abstract: An actuating system for operating longitudinal doors of a railroad hopper car. The mechanism includes an operating member which is coupled to each end of the door set of the car by a shaft and a linkage which couples a power source to the operating member, where the operating members rotate to move the doors away from the hopper. Reversing the rotation of the operating members closes the door set of the hopper. The mechanism can be used in new car construction, and can also be retrofitted onto existing hopper cars.
Abstract: An actuating system for manually operating the doors of a railroad hopper car. An operating shaft having a handle is rigidly coupled to an actuating lever. A door opening lever, which is rotatably coupled to the actuating lever, is rotatably coupled to the door for a hopper chute. To operate the system, an operator rotates the handle of the operating shaft, rotating the actuating lever and the door opening lever, shifting the door from the closed to the open position.
Abstract: An anatomic posterior lumbar system comprising of a thin plate and fasteners for securing the plate to vertebra or other osseous material. The plate is preferably a thin rectangular structure having an opening running lengthwise in its central portion. At least one pedicle screw having a hollow threaded interior is fastened to a vertebra, and the plate located on the screw using the opening. A washer spans the width of the plate, and accommodates an inner screw, which is threaded into the pedicle screw, and captures the head of the inner screw. Miscellaneous shapes of plates are also disclosed which are fitted to specific portions of the spine.
Abstract: An impact device (10) employing a novel direct electric propulsion system. The device operates by placing a conductive piston (23) adjacent to an electric coil (18) then rapidly releasing electrical energy stored in a capacitor (17) to energize the coil (18) and propel the piston according to the Lorentz force principal. The system can be designed for a wide range of drive energy, and offers several performance advantages over known propulsion systems. These advantages include simple construction and operation, low manufacturing costs, low drive energy variation, and the ability to adjust drive energy while over a wide range while maintaining low energy variation at reduced levels. The system is adaptable to be powered by either corded electric, or battery, or fuel cell.

Abstract: A therapeutic sling seat comprising a flexible material which is non-uniform in stiffness providing maximum contact surface area with the body of a person seated in the seat by spreading the forces away from high pressure areas using multiaxis tension forces. The seat material in tension adapts to the contour of the posterior of the seated person. By controlling the pressures on the ischial tuberosities, physical problems such as ulcers can be avoided.
Abstract: The present invention provides a single-use electronic device and test card for use therein which performs a coagulation or lysis assay of a blood or plasma sample. The device includes a housing having an exterior surface and defining an interior area and means for receiving the sample through the housing into the interior space. A non-porous substrate is positioned within the interior space for receiving the sample thereon. Preferably, a reagent accelerates the coagulation of the sample and is positioned on the substrate and in contact with the sample. An electroactive species is added to the sample. The device also measures the impedance of the sample and generating an electrical signal which correlates to a curve of the coagulation/lysis assay. Optionally, the electrical signal is received and converted into a digital output corresponding to the coagulation/lysis assay using assay calibration information stored therein. The digital output can be displayed external to the housing.
Abstract: A capillary for introduction of whole blood into an analysis device. The capillary has a variable volume along its length, which allows the liquid sample to be drawn into the interior of the cartridge, away from the inlet, reducing the risk of contamination of the sample from the outside.
