Abstract: Disclosed are electrorheological fluids which display improved stability against sedimentation, reduced current density and good electrorheological responses. In the preferred embodiment of this invention, these electrorheological fluids are prepared from monomers which are polymerized by dispersion polymerization in a low conductivity medium which also serves as the dispersion medium for the fluid.
Abstract: A method is disclosed for preparing filled shaped articles of metathesis polymerized poly(cycloolefins) wherein an inorganic filler material is treated with a norbornene-substituted silane coupling agent. The norbornene moiety copolymerizes with the metathesis polymerizable monomer and the silane moiety creates a bond with the filler. Products are characterized by improved physical properties.

Abstract: Rosin esters having improved viscosity stability are prepared by heating a mixture of rosin and a polyol in the presence of a catalyst mixture of 0.1% to 0.6% by weight calcium bis(ethyl 3,5-di-t-butyl-4-hydroxybenzyl phosphonate) and 0.02 to 1.0% by weight of a second calcium compound selected from calcium carbonate, calcium oxide and a calcium salt of an aliphatic carboxylic acid, all percentages being based on the weight of rosin.
Abstract: An aluminum- and titanium-containing oligomer is prepared by a controlled hydrolysis reaction between a chelated aluminum compound and an organotitanium compound. The oligomer is heated to 800.degree. C. in an oxygen-containing atmosphere to produce .beta.-aluminum titanate.
Abstract: Silazane polymers are prepared by (1) reacting ammonia with one or more halogenated organic silicon compounds containing an Si-H bond to produce a silazane ammonolysis product, (2) mixing the ammonolysis product with 0.1% to 30% by weight of an organic amide or thioamide, and (3) heating to a temperature of 30.degree. to 300.degree. C. Silazane polymers containing alkenyl or alkynyl groups can be cured by supplying energy to generate free radicals. The cured or uncured polymers can be pyrolyzed to produce silicon nitride-containing ceramic materials.
Abstract: Disclosed is a sintered ceramic product comprising (a) 20-98 percent by weight silicon nitride, (b) 1-80 percent by weight of a silicide of iron, cobalt or nickel and (c) 0.02-20 parts by weight of at least one oxide, nitride, or silicate of an element of IUPAC groups 2, 3, 4, 13 or the lanthanide series. A method for making such a product is also disclosed.

Abstract: The color stability of rosin esters is improved by carrying out the esterification reaction in the presence of 0.05% to 5% sodium hydroxymethane sulfonate (SHS). The color stability of polymerized rosin is improved by heating at a temperature of 250.degree.-290.degree. C. in the presence of SHS.
Abstract: A composition that comprises a poly(thio)ureasilazane having at least one alkenyl or alkynyl group and a free radical generator can be crosslinked by an energy input provided in the form of heat, ultraviolet radiation, or an electron beam. The crosslinked poly(thio)ureasilazane compositions can be pyrolyzed to form silicon nitride-containing ceramics.
Abstract: Polysilazane addition polymers are prepared by (1) reacting ammonia with one or more halogenated organic silicon compounds to produce a cyclic silazane ammonolysis product and (2) reacting the ammonolysis product with from 0.1% to 30% by weight of an isocyanate, isothiocyanate, ketene, thioketene, carbodiimide, or carbon disulfide. Polysilazane addition polymers containing alkenyl or alkynyl groups can be cured by supplying energy to generate free radicals. The cured or uncured polymers can be pyrolyzed to produce silicon nitride-containing ceramic materials.
Abstract: Disclosed are electrorheological (ER) fluids which display improved stability against sedimentation, reduced current density and good ER responses. Thes=e ER fluids are prepared from monomers which are polymerized by dispersion polymerization in a low conductivity medium which also serves as the dispersion medium for the fluid. The ER fluids are further processed by modifying the polymer particles through polymerization of a hydrophilic monomer to form a hydrophilic shell or globule around the particles followed by neutralization through addition of an organic soluble base. The resulting dispersion is then doped with water to obtain a stable ER fluid. The hydrophilic shell or globule constitutes about 15% of the particle. Water dopant is only absorbed by the hydrophilic portion of the particle and does not enter into the core of the particle. The quantity of water is significantly reduced, which in turn results in a significant reduction of the current density at any given comparative voltage.

Abstract: Disclosed is an improved process for casting the impression of a tire tread by preparing a negative mold of the tire tread and making a positive cast from the negative mold. The improvement consists of pouring a liquid photopolymerizable composition into the negative mold of the tire tread, applying a vacuum, exposing the composition to ultraviolet radiation to cross-link the polymer, removing the positive cast from the negative mold, and exposing the cast to additional ultraviolet radiation in the absence of oxygen to harden the surface of the cast.
