    Abstract: The present invention provides an improved antimicrobial composition which includes at least one quaternary ammonium compound and nerolidol. The nerolidol component of the composition provides enhanced antimicrobial efficacy, even when used in small amounts. Further, the nerolidol component provides such enhanced antimicrobial efficacy that the quaternary ammonium compound may be used in reduced amounts as compared to the amounts used for antimicrobial effect in prior formulations. The enhanced antimicrobial composition of the present invention is especially useful in cleaning or disinfecting applications, such as the cleaning of hard surfaces.

The exemplary diamidodiol has the formula C15H30N2O4 and is prepared by reacting a first quantity of 2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol with a second quantity of a di-substituted malonyl dichloride (i.e., diethylmalonyl dichloride), preferably in ethyl acetate as solvent. A tetraamido macrocycle is prepared from the diamidodiol in two steps by oxidizing the diamidodiol to form a diacid followed by coupling using a known procedure of the diacid with an aryl diamine (e.g., 1,2-diaminobenzene)to yield the tetraamido macrocycle.

The employment of a glycoside surfactant, especially one having an HLB value of greater than 13, remarkably improves the performance of such a shower rinsing composition both with respect to surface appearance streaking and filming and also bathroom soil and soap scum removing ability.
