Patent number: 5280335Abstract: A system for testing a fiber-optic component with infrared radiation is provided. The testing system has a source of infrared radiation, an optic coupler, a detecting circuit, and an analog tape recorder. The optic coupler directs the infrared radiation onto the fiber-optic component. The detection circuit is electrically connected to the tape recorder. The detection circuit has an amplifier, a potentiometer connected in parallel to the amplifier, and a photoelectric transducer connected in series to the amplifier. These components are mounted on a non-conductive board. A power source supplies voltage and is connected to the amplifier. The circuit operates by having the photoelectric transducer sense the infrared radiation emitted from the tested fiber-optic component and convert the radiation into an electrical signal. The amplifier then amplifies the electrical signal to the voltage necessary for driving the tape recorder.Type: GrantFiled: May 26, 1992Date of Patent: January 18, 1994Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the NavyInventor: Francis L. Patent number: 5280287Abstract: An Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) method and system are provided to dct i) friendly ground-based vehicles, ii) each of the vehicle's unique identity, and iii) each of the vehicle's approximate position. A video image of an area of interest on the ground is generated from an aircraft. The video image is defined by a matrix of pixels. A range from the aircraft to a reference position within the area of interest is provided. The reference position is defined by known latitude, longitude and height within the area of interest and is further defined in the matrix of pixels by matrix coordinates. A coded signal is transmitted from a vehicle on the ground to uniquely identify the vehicle and identify the vehicle as friendly. The coded signal is also detectable as part of the video image when the coded signal is transmitted from the area of interest. The vehicle position within the area of interest is thus defined in the matrix of pixels by matrix coordinates.Type: GrantFiled: June 30, 1992Date of Patent: January 18, 1994Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the NavyInventor: Alan G. Patent number: 5278966Abstract: The toroidal computer memory system utilizes toroidal memory paths in its chitecture to enable memory locations along those paths to be obtained in a single access, as compared to multiple accesses typically required by conventional linear computer memory. The storage/retrievable media is designed to replicate paths on the surface of a torus. By defining certain parameters and the mathematical properties of these memory paths in the electronics of a controller, points on the memory paths can be accessed from the storage/retrieval media more efficiently than conventional computer memory.Type: GrantFiled: June 29, 1990Date of Patent: January 11, 1994Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the NavyInventors: Allen D. Patent number: 5251052Abstract: A reconfigurable digital optical lookup table for solving Boolean equations sing an array of bistable optical devices is provided. A single light source is divided into a matrix of light beams using binary phase gratings and a lens system. This matrix of beams is modulated by a spatial light modulator symmetric self electro-optic effect device (S-SEED) according to the desired lookup table. The modulated light beams are used to set an S-SEED array with the lookup table. The rows and columns of the S-SEED array are then reset according to the inputs to the Boolean equation. Once all of the inputs have been processed, the S-SEED array will have only one member whose state has not been affected by the inputs, and the value of this S-SEED corresponds to the solution to the Boolean equation. The final result is output by using a matrix of equal intensity light beams and a mask to read out the state of one side of the S-SEEDs, and focusing the result onto a detector.Type: GrantFiled: September 2, 1992Date of Patent: October 5, 1993Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the NavyInventors: Roy M.
