Patent number: 5415532Abstract: A pump and a method for pumping liquid or fluid through a pair resilient es includes a shuttle block which partially compresses the tubes in a balanced, alternating manner. The resilient tubes are held in a parallel relationship with a predetermined space defined therebetween. Within the predetermined space, a shuttle block is oscillated along the linear axis to partially compress the tubes in an alternating fashion. As one of the two parallel tubes is compressed, fluid is pumped out of the tube and at the same time fluid is drawn into the second tube as the latter tube resumes its original shape. The resilience of both tubes also is used to assist the pumping action in a balanced fashion, thereby providing a pump that has low power consumption and is lightweight.Type: GrantFiled: November 30, 1993Date of Patent: May 16, 1995Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the ArmyInventors: Michael H. Patent number: 5206652Abstract: A height measurement system uses an inexpensive ultrasonic height measuring evice to provide an apparent height of a descending airborne object. To compensate for movement of the object during the ultrasonic measurement, a Doppler radar velocity measuring device determines the vertical velocity in a short measurement period. The measured vertical velocity is used to determine the vertical distance travelled during the ultrasonic measurement and to compensate therefor by converting the apparent height to a true height of the descending object. Updates of the true height may be obtained by storing the vertical velocity and retrieving the vertical velocity for multiplication by a time value to obtain an updated value of the true height.Type: GrantFiled: November 7, 1991Date of Patent: April 27, 1993Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the ArmyInventors: Reed W. Patent number: 5005206Abstract: Method of and arrangement for image data compression by vector quantization in accordance with a precoding in blocks, thereafter comparing by means of a neural network precoded blocks with reference words stored in the form of a code book so as to transmit selected indices to a receiver. In accordance with the method, the neural network effects a learning phase with prescribed prototypes, thereafter with the aid of test vectors originating from the image generates an adaptive code book which is transmitted to the receiver. This adaptation utilizes attractors, which may be induced metastable states, of the neural network, and which are submitted to an optimizing procedure. The arrangement can process images with a view to their storage. It is also possible to utilize two devices which operate alternately, one device for generating the adaptive code book and the other one to utilize it with the object of processing television pictures in real time.Type: GrantFiled: November 20, 1989Date of Patent: April 2, 1991Assignee: U.S. Philips CorporationInventors: Martine Naillon, Jean-Bernard Theeten

Patent number: 4999825Abstract: A record carrier (1) in the form of a disc-shaped carrier provided with a radiation-sensitive layer (6) having a servo track (4). The servo track produces track modulation by having a radial wobble, or lateral periodic deviation whose frequency is modulated with a position-information signal (FIG. 2). Apparatus (FIG. 8) is presented which forms the track pattern during manufacture of the record carrier (1). When an information signal (Vi) is recorded on the record carrier (1) and the recorded signal is read by recording and/or read apparatus (FIG. 4), the position-information signal (FIG. 2) is recovered by an FM demodulator device (60) from variations in the scanning beam (55) which are propduced by the track modulation. Moveover, a clock signal for the purpose of scanning-velocity control is recovered from this variation in the scanning beam. Furthermore, embodiments of the record carrier highly suitable for recording EFM-modulated signals are described.Type: GrantFiled: November 1, 1988Date of Patent: March 12, 1991Assignee: U.S. Philips CorporationInventors: Wilhelmus P. Patent number: 4972401Abstract: An optically readable record carrier for storing digitally coded information having a power spectrum with a substantially zero level at a predetermined frequency. The information is recorded on and/or reproduced from substantially parallel elongated tracks on the record carrier which have a periodic undulation at the aforesaid predetermined frequency. Such undulation generates a clock signal for synchronizing the recording and/or reproduction of the digitally encoded information on the tracks, and does not interfere with the recording or reproduction of such information. Apparatus is disclosed for forming such tracks on the record carrier.Type: GrantFiled: January 17, 1989Date of Patent: November 20, 1990Assignee: U.S. Philips CorporationInventors: Marino G.
