  • Patent number: 6876143
Abstract: A method for fabricating organic light active devices using field-attractive Organic Light Active Material (“OLAM™”) microcapsules. The OLAM microcapsules are randomly dispersed within a monomer carrier fluid that is injected or otherwise disposed between two electrodes. The OLAM microcapsules may include additives that impart rheological properties, and other electrical, mechanical, optical and magnetic properties. The OLAM microcapsules form chains between the electrodes when an aligning field is applied. Holding the aligning field to keep the chains formed, the carrier fluid is cured and the OLAM microcapsule chains are locked into alignment between the electrodes. The problem of contamination of the OLAM material is the major factor limiting the display life span, and thus is a bar to commercial success.

  • Patent number: 6045076
Abstract: An antibacklashing fishing reel. A spool holds and releases a length of fishing line. An overrun condition of the fishing line being released from the spool is determined by a line motion sensor. The line motion sensor includes a rotatable member rotatable in response to movement of the fishing line during a cast and a sensor for sensing the rotation of the rotatable member. The sensor generates the line motion signal depending on the sensed rotation of the rotatable member. An electronically variable brake is controlled depending on the line motion signal for applying a variable braking force to resist rotation of the spool in response to the determined overrun condition of the fishing line being released from the spool. When the line motion signal indicates that the line is being played out from the spool slower than the spool is releasing it, an overrun condition is determined and the spool is braked to prevent the occurrence of a backlash.

  • Patent number: 5749533
Abstract: An antibacklashing fishing reel having an electronically variable brake for preventing backlash. A spool holds and releases a length of fishing line. An electronically variable brake is coupled with the spool for applying a variable braking force to resist rotation of the spool during casting to prevent the spool from overrunning the length of fishing line being released from the spool. An overrun status of the length of fishing line being released from the spool is determined, and a status signal dependent thereon is generated. A controller receives the status signal and controls the electronically variable brake to apply the variable braking force to resist rotation of the spool during casting so that a progressively greater braking force is applied when the overrun status indicates that the spool is overrunning the length of fishing line being released.

  • Patent number: 5431319
Abstract: A holder for a coin cup. A loop strap member defines an opening to receive a coin cup. The loop strap member is effective for supporting the coin cup by demountably engaging with the peripheral surface of the coin cup. Gravity will then urge the coin cup into snug engagement with the loop strap member to be supported thereby. A shoulder strap member is fixed to the loop strap member so that the circumference of the loop strap member is bisected between its ends. In the preferred embodiment, the shoulder strap member is fixed to the loop strap member such that the circumference of the loop strap member is bisected in unequal lengths between the first end and the second end of the shoulder strap member. Thus, the center of support of the loop strap member by the shoulder strap member is offset from the center of gravity of the coin cup supported by the loop strap member and has a tendency to tip in a direction of the longer length of the bisected circumference of the loop strap.

  • Patent number: 5409435
Abstract: A variable resistance exercise device provides a variable resisting force in response to a user applied force. The variable resistance exercise device includes at least one rotating force transmitting means for inputting a user applied force as a rotational force to be resisted, and at least one force transmission member for transmitting the user applied force. The user applied force is resisted by varying the viscosity of a viscosity variable fluid which surround plates rotated by the user applied force. Thus a braking force is applied to actively resist the user applied force. In accordance with the invention, a multi-configurable multi-programmable exercise device is provided which may be used in a variety of exercise modes to provide a resistive force to a user-applied force during a range of motion of a particular exercise. In a preferred embodiment of the present invention, a variable resistor resists a user-supplied force in one rotational direction only.

  • Patent number: 5408214
Abstract: An impact sensor for a motor vehicle has a plurality of sensing members disposed on a motor vehicle which are effective for sensing an impact with an obstacle and generating a signal in response thereto. The sensing members include a respective telescoping support member which is fixedly supportable by the motor vehicle and has a first telescope member and a second telescope member. The first telescope member is dimensioned and configured to slideably move relative to the second telescope member in a telescoping manner. A rigid member, which is supported by each of the telescoping support members, and which extends therefore from the vehicle, is effective for transferring a force of impact occurring between the rigid member and an obstacle to at least one of the sensing members. Thus, when an obstacle contacts with the rigid member, the rigid member deflects causing the telescoping support member of at least one of the sensing members to compress in response to the force of impact.
