  • Patent number: 5346972
Abstract: Porous particles of MgCl.sub.2 which have essentially the shape of two truncated right cones connected by their larger bases, which truncated cones are incurved towards the axis of symmetry perpendicular to the bases, at the intersection of the envelope of the truncated cones with two orthogonal planes passing through the said axis of symmetry. These particles are impregnated with a transition metal compound and employed as a catalytic component in the polymerization of olefins. The resultant polyolefins, especially polyethylene, polypropylene and their copolymers, are comprised of particles with a distinctive structure.

  • Patent number: 5338402
Abstract: A process for preparing chemithermomechanical pulp comprising subjecting a lignocellulosic substance from which said pulp is to be formed to the simultaneous action of a sulfite and a reducing agent that is more electronegative than the sulfite ion during a nondestructive cooking operation at a temperature of about 100.degree. C. or above under saturated steam pressure; said simultaneous action taking place at an initial pH of between 7 and 12.5.

  • Patent number: 5338711
Abstract: Mixes for forming high alumina refractory shapes with high resistance to aluminum penetration comprising at least about 60% by weight aluminum oxide, about 1 to 5% by weight boron phosphate, and about 5 to 15% by weight silicon carbide. A phosphorous-containing binder is added and the mix can be formed into brick which when cured or burned to a temperature below the oxidation temperature of silicon carbide can be used to minimize aluminum penetration and dross when the brick are employed in a metallurgical vessel in contact with molten aluminum.

  • Patent number: 5318933
Abstract: Carbon-containing carbon bonded refractory mixes and products made therefrom in which the refractory is a magnesite or high alumina aggregate and containing a silica-free elemental boron containing B-Mg-O alloy powder containing at least 95% B-Mg-O. and shapes made therefrom. The invention also involves the method of increasing the lining life of a metallurgical vessel utilizing unburned brick made from the above-noted mixes.

  • Patent number: 5318932
Abstract: A plastic refractory composition in which the constituents are silicon carbide grain having a SiC content of at least 92% SiC, a calcined or reactive alumina, up to 10% bentonite, and 0.5 to 5% boron phosphate. A phosphorous-containing liquid is used to bind the composition when used. Also disclosed are pressed shapes, particularly tiles, made from such compositions in which ball clay is substituted for the bentonite.

  • Patent number: 5308631
Abstract: The process comprises bringing into contact a naturally alcoholic beer with a hydrophobic zeolite, separating the aqueous eluent phase from the adsorbent, thermally desorbing the adsorbed products, recovering the desorbed phase and separating it by distillation into an alcoholate and an aromatized phase, then reconstituting an alcohol-free beer by mixing the dealcoholized aqueous phase and the aromatized phase with, secondarily, saturation of the reconstituted beer with gaseous carbon dioxide. The reconstituted beer preserves the organoleptic properties of the initial beer.
