Abstract: A method for processing prickly pear cactus skeletons and the resulting article. The process produces stabilized, acid and mold-free planer or three-dimensionally formed, cactus skeletons that can be easily handled. The method of the present invention preserves and enhances the natural intricate and delicate vein-like structures of the native skeleton and effectively alters the natural pH to a highly non-acidic state. Prickly pear cactus skeletons processed by the inventive method are ideally suited to be used as, or incorporated into, museum quality frame matting.
Abstract: An insect dissuasion method that incorporates a miniature fly swatter adapted to be fixed onto an end of a human finger. An insect can be discouraged by simply flexing, slowly encroaching upon and then “flicking” the finger with the attached device to strike the insect. Devices of the present invention are designed to be removably attached to a finger by a ring-like structure. The ring-like structure is tailored to slip onto and engage a finger in various positions and remain attached to the finger when the finger is flicked. Joined to the ring-like structure is an extension shaft that terminates in an insect engagement head. The length and/or cross-sectional profile of the extension shaft can be altered as well as the shape of the head portion or ring-like structure.
Abstract: A bi-stable snap action ribbon spring incorporated into self-latching, spring-loaded mechanisms. The dual mode stability of the spring eliminates the need for complex latching mechanisms thereby simplifying the device manufacture and device reliability. The spring is stable in either a linear or coiled state enabling the simplified design of rolling, hinging and feeding mechanisms. A plan or map rolling and presentation device incorporates a bi-stable snap action ribbon spring along with optional spring end caps and stiffening elements. The plan or map is driven to a stable coiled or stable rolled shape by the influence of the snap action spring. Application of the snap spring properties to a discreet length of a longer ribbon can create a hybrid bi-stable hinge mechanism. A convenient storage container utilizes the bi-stable characteristics of a snap action ribbon spring to create a container having a self-closing and captured lid.

In a preferred embodiment, the device is a commercially available cable-tie, modified to provide a releasable attachment and reliable storage of a focusing straw onto an aerosol can. A method of the present invention allows a user to modify an existing cable-tie to provide releasable attachment of a focusing straw onto an aerosol can or other item. The availability and subsequent use of a focusing straw often reduces aerosol over-spray and the resultant air borne contamination. Use of the present invention has, in some cases, reduced the consumption of aerosol spray oil by 30%.
