Patent number: 4498521Abstract: This invention is directed to the process and system for controlling the level of molten metal in a plurality of vertically oriented, continuous or semicontinuous casting units, particularly electromagnetic casting units. The flows of molten metal to the individual casting units are adjusted automatically in response to a control set point signal from a master controller in order to maintain essentially the same molten metal level in all of the casting units. Improved startup and termination procedures are also given.Type: GrantFiled: May 26, 1981Date of Patent: February 12, 1985Assignee: Kaiser Aluminum & Chemical CorporationInventors: Susumu Takeda, Allen W. Patent number: 4477287Abstract: This invention relates to an improved method and device for removing liquid from a moving surface such as a continuous metal sheet or strip. The invention has particular application to the removing of lubricant and/or coolant from sheet or strip in a rolling operation or the backup rolls of the rolling mills. The invention comprises a vacuum unit to remove most of the liquid from the moving surface, an air knife to drive the liquid remaining on the surface toward the vacuum unit, and a vent maintained at a pressure intermediate between the low pressure of the vacuum unit and the high pressure of the air knife to minimize eddy current formation in the gas flow from the air knife to the vacuum unit. Eddy currents can cause the redeposition of liquid onto the essentially dry sheet or strip.Type: GrantFiled: February 8, 1983Date of Patent: October 16, 1984Assignee: Kaiser Aluminum & Chemical CorporationInventors: Donald C. Patent number: 4252232Abstract: An article handling system for cans and the like, wherein improved means are employed for selectively isolating individual cans from a substantially continuously recirculating mass or plurality of cans and for, therafter, transferring the isolated cans in single file fashion away from said recirculating mass of cans to a discharge station located somewhat remote from the recirculating mass of cans in such a fashion as to avoid adverse interference with the normal movements of the recirculating mass of cans. The single file movement of the isolated cans is then continued as the isolated cans are individually transferred from the discharge station to a further location.Type: GrantFiled: January 7, 1980Date of Patent: February 24, 1981Assignee: Kaiser Aluminum & Chemical CorporationInventors: Ludwig Beck, Huibertus A. Patent number: 4214467Abstract: This invention relates to a metal coil handling system that allows the user to fully automate operations involving the conventional unwrapping of the leading end of a coil of metal from the remainder of the metal coil and subsequently threading the said leading end of the coil through rolling mill entry rolls. The invention includes equipment for disengaging and peeling this leading end of the coil away from the remainder of the coil and for holding the peeled length of metal coil strip taut throughout the mill feeding operations. The instant handling system eliminates or minimizes frictional scratches in the body of the coil normally caused by unwrapping and rewrapping of the leading end of metal during mill feeding operations.Type: GrantFiled: March 5, 1979Date of Patent: July 29, 1980Assignee: Kaiser Aluminum & Chemical CorporationInventor: Subbiah Sankaran

Patent number: 4194388Abstract: The instant invention relates to a device for testing the end buckling strength of a can body wherein a uniquely disposed compressible ring- or doughnut-like member of appropriate elastic material is adapted to be compressed against the inside surface of a metal or container for the purpose of sealing the interior of the metal can from the atmosphere. The sealed interior of the can is then subjected to appropriate fluid or air pressure to determine the buckling characteristics of the can's closed end structure, after which the can body can be released from the testing device in an improved fashion.Type: GrantFiled: December 18, 1978Date of Patent: March 25, 1980Assignee: Kaiser Aluminum & Chemical CorporationInventor: Thomas A. Mack

Patent number: 4181235Abstract: Improved method for manufacturing spherical cryogenic liquid holding tanks as well as the tanks produced thereby, wherein at least the major hemispherical portions of such tanks are formed from curvilinear elongated quadralateral plate members which in the case of a given tank each have substantially the same arcuate minor axis dimensional width when measured at the midpoint of the arcuate major axis but varying lengths. These plate members of varying lengths are initially selectively arranged and secured to each other to form a series of substantially symmetrical and uniformly dimensioned, individual, triangular spherical tank sectors or modules.Type: GrantFiled: January 9, 1978Date of Patent: January 1, 1980Assignee: Kaiser Aluminum & Chemical CorporationInventor: Frank R. Baysinger

Patent number: 4141666Abstract: Improved low headroom culvert comprised of a plurality of shallow arch-shaped corrugated culvert sections and elongated unitary load transferring stringer stiffener elements, the stringer stiffener elements being arranged in generally spaced parallel relation to each other and secured to the inside surfaces of said sections. The stringer elements extend for substantially the full length of the culvert thereby acting to integrate the culvert sections into a unitary overall culvert structure. Certain of the stringer elements are located a selected distance inwardly from the free bottom edges of the culvert sections and provide combination culvert reinforcing stringer elements and elongated footings and soil supports.Type: GrantFiled: February 16, 1978Date of Patent: February 27, 1979Assignee: Kaiser Aluminum & Chemical CorporationInventor: Clifford A. DeGraff

Patent number: 4128186Abstract: Improved sectionalized depressible opener tab for easy open containers wherein one of the sections can be relatively small as compared to the dimensions of the overall tab while being connected by an improved hinge arrangement to the remainder of the tab. This hinge arrangement permits either a simultaneous selective depression of multiple tab sections or depression of only one tab section to obtain initial separation of the tab from the container component with which the tab is associated and a controlled release of internal container pressure.Type: GrantFiled: December 7, 1977Date of Patent: December 5, 1978Assignee: Kaiser Aluminum & Chemical CorporationInventor: Gordon R.
