  • Patent number: 7265494
Abstract: An electronic circuit including a microchip for use as an intelligent user interface also comprises touch sensor technology that differentiates between proximity and physical contact events to activate and control various loads including light bulbs, products with radio frequency circuitry or electric motors. An input to the microchip is connected to a switch or sensing structure that does not form a serial link between the power source and the load. The electronic circuit controls various functions in response to user actions including automatic delayed shut-off functions, find-in-the-dark indicator and a power source level/product state indications. The microchip allows the user to select specific functions based on the time duration of activation signals, the time duration between activation signals and the number of activation signals at the input.

  • Patent number: 7263162
Abstract: Sample mounts (10) for mounting microcrystals of biological macromolecules for X-ray crystallography are prepared by using patterned thin polyimide films (12) that have curvature imparted thereto, for example, by being attached to a curved outer surface of a small metal rod (16). The patterned film (12) preferably includes a tapered tip end (24) for holding a crystal. Preferably, a small sample aperture is disposed in the film for reception of the crystal. A second, larger aperture can also be provided that is connected to the sample aperture by a drainage channel, allowing removal of excess liquid and easier manipulation in viscous solutions. The curvature imparted to the film (12) increases the film's rigidity and allows a convenient scoop-like action for retrieving crystals. The polyimide contributes minimally to background and absorption, and can be treated to obtain desired hydrophobicity or hydrophilicity.

  • Patent number: 7259984
Abstract: Metal nanocrystal memories are fabricated to include higher density states, stronger coupling with the channel, and better size scalability, than has been available with semiconductor nanocrystal devices. A self-assembled nanocrystal formation process by rapid thermal annealing of ultra thin metal film deposited on top of gate oxide is integrated with NMOSFET to fabricate such devices. Devices with Au, Ag, and Pt nanocrystals working in the F-N tunneling regime, with hot-carrier injection as the programming mechanism, demonstrate retention times up to 106s, and provide 2-bit-per-cell storage capability.

  • Patent number: 7251258
Abstract: A photonic-crystal fiber provides dispersion compensation in a soliton fiber laser. The anomalous dispersion provided by the photonic-crystal fiber permits construction of a femtosecond fiber laser at 1 ?m wavelength without prisms or diffraction gratings. The laser produces ˜100-fs pulses with 1 nJ energy, and is a major step toward environmentally-stable all-fiber devices at 1 ?m.

  • Patent number: 7249682
Abstract: A clamping cartridge is provided which comprises a plurality of clamping mechanisms spaced apart on a frame or chassis. The clamping mechanisms are generally oriented perpendicular to their direction of spacing. The clamping mechanisms are of the type which comprise a pair of relatively movable jaws which are normally biased towards one another such that they resist opening and which return to a closed or substantially closed condition in the absence of external forces. An actuator operable in association with the clamping mechanisms serves to open and close the jaws of the clamping mechanisms in unison. The actuator includes a series of rotatable tapered cylindrical cam wheels disposed on a rotatable cam shaft to ultimately effect opening and closing of the clamps, which cam wheels are disposed generally within the clamps. By providing apertures or slots in the jaws of the clamps to accommodate the cam shaft, a considerable reduction in the height of the cartridge can be realized.

  • Patent number: 7243500
Abstract: Systems and methods for heat exchange in accordance with the invention define adequately long-interchange distances for two fluids by wrapping a tube containing a first fluid about the wall of an inner cylindrical tank, within a gap formed with a second concentric tank. A second fluid is transmitted in the space defined between the turns of the tube and the two walls, providing effective short length thermal interchange through the tube walls. The tube is in the line contact with both tank walls and the fluids can flow rapidly over an adequately long length, so that high efficiency is provided in a low cost system.

  • Patent number: 7240616
Abstract: A dressing is pressed against a surface of a cylinder of a printing machine by the use of pressing elements. Several such dressings may be arranged next to each other in the axial direction of the cylinder. The pressing elements, used in connection with one of the plurality of dressings, are operable independently of other pressing elements that are used in connection with other ones of the dressings. These pressing elements may be provided as roller elements. Additional pressing elements are located, spaced in a circumferential direction of the cylinder, from the other pressing elements. • Patent number: 7240599
Abstract: This invention teaches a rope that can be electrified. The rope is comprised of an outer sheath and an inner core. The outer sheath includes non-conductive elements braided with one or more conductive elements. The conductive elements are wound in a parallel helical pattern and do not touch each other. The inner core is a braid comprising non-conductive and conductive elements. In both cores, the conductive elements comprise one or more metal strands and the non-conductive elements comprise one or more monofilaments of synthetic or natural fibers. Should a breakage occur in the conductive elements of the outer sheath, the conductive elements of the inner core provide conductivity across the breakage and throughout the length of the rope by intermittently contacting the conductive elements of the outer sheath. An optional colored tracer can be braided into the outer sheath to provide better visibility since the non-conductive elements are preferably a neutral color, such as white.

  • Patent number: 7234397
Abstract: Devices are used for fixing or attaching at least one packing or dressing to a cylinder. A retaining element is located in a channel in the cylinder and retains one end of the dressing or packing. A spring element is also located in the channel and cooperates with the retaining element to exert a required clamping force on the end of the packing or dressing. The retaining element is pivotably supported in the base of the channel and is fixed in the base, while in its clamping portion, by the spring element. This insures that the retaining element will not be inadvertently unclamped from the channel.
