  • Patent number: 5213453
Abstract: In a self-reversing tapping attachment an improved coolant system includes at least one fluid flow orifice at the end of a fluid flow conduit contained in a drive spindle member and further includes a fluid contact member for generating force to prevent interference with the drive spindle member prior to tapping a hole. Provision is further made for self-correction of any tendency for back pressure of fluid flow to interfere with motion of the drive spindle member by provision for covering the fluid flow orifice during motion under back pressure, thereby reducing such pressure. A collector chamber and exit orifice for expulsion to ambient of coolant fluid prevent invasion of the inner mechanism by coolant under back pressure.

  • Patent number: 5209616
Abstract: In self-reversing tapping attachments improved ball drive means are connectable to source of rotational drive and drive transmitting means are engagable, with the drive means including at least one driving ball member and with the drive transmitting means defining at least one slot for the ball member, which slot includes a ramp section inclined so that upon engagement between the drive means and the ball member the latter travels upwardly thereby cushioning impact between the drive means and the drive transmitting means. A radially extending member on a tap holder member has a radius of curvature less than the radius of curvature of contact members of the drive transmitting means to cushion impact.

  • Patent number: 5203651
Abstract: A tapping attachment for driving a tapping spindle constructed to be adapted for both direct drive and reverse drive of the spindle. The drive of the spindle is by way of a resiliently mounted dog ring having rigid radially extending drive dogs, extending radially outwardly and inwardly from a drive ring. The driving dogs are rigid, having slanting sides to accommodate clutching engagement and disengagement. Clutching engagement and disengagement occur as a result of relative axial movement as between the attachment and the drive spindle. The drive spindle has a central bore in which is provided an insert member having an axial bore which is connected to a flexible tube within the bore of the spindle, which accommodates relative axial movement, the flexible tube communicating with a similar bore in a tap itself. These bores provide a channel for continuously supplying coolant to the machine and to the spindle itself.

  • Patent number: 5195624
Abstract: A screw thread cutting apparatus (tapping attachment) which is provided with a clutching apparatus within the attachment, having the capability of de-clutching the drive from the driver in the event of excessive torque. The clutching apparatus involves a clutching member or members carried by the driver and a clutching member or members carried by the driven part, and a displaceable clutching member which can produce a clutching or de-clutching action between the other members. The clutching apparatus can be built into an adapter for holding a tap provided with quick change capability. The clutching apparatus can also be built directly into the driver.

  • Patent number: 5174424
Abstract: The invention is an apparatus for producing clutching and de-clutching particularly adaptable for use in a tapping attachment for threading holes. The clutching apparatus includes clutching members driven by the driver or driving machine and clutching members carried by the driven part. An intermediate member is provided which provides for clutching engagement and de-clutching between the members on the driving part and the members on the driven part. The clutching apparatus has the capability of producing de-clutching in response to excessive torque applied to the apparatus, and also, it has the capability of producing de-clutching in response to the tap having reached a predetermined depth and the hole being tapped. The apparatus can be built into a tapping attachment or into a tap holding adapter having the capability of quick change release, and also, the mechanism can be built directly into the driving apparatus.

  • Patent number: 5120100
Abstract: Lifting and Gripping Apparatus for massive workpieces such as pipes comprises a stationary member and two moveable members, pivoted thereto at points higher than the springline of the workpiece and displaced from one another so as to operate in separate paths. Latching members operate in separate paths between an open position in which there is disengagement with the workpiece and a closed position in which there is engagement with the workpiece for purposes of lifting. Lifting force produces motion of the moveable members through associated cam members such that there is engagement with the workpiece.

  • Patent number: 4909278
Abstract: A control arrangement for a gas-fired system. Three diaphragm-operated valves are in series providing a stage operation. The valves are pilot controlled. A booster pump is provided for cooperation with the pilot valves to boost the line pressure to the first of the valves, the boosted pressure being sufficient to operate the diaphragm valves, and the boosted pressure being controlled by the pilot valves. The booster pump operates only when needed. Diaphragm-operated pilot valves means are provided which operate two separate pilot valves which control the pressure on the opposite sides of the diaphragm of the diaphragm valves. The system provides stage operation, the stages including a first stage which is closing of a vent valve connected between disphragm control valves, opening of a first diaphragm valve, and a third stage which is a controlled slow opening of the second diaphragm control valve. The first diaphragm valve is both a control valve and a pressure regulator.
