  • Patent number: 4485731
Abstract: Buttermilk curd is continuously manufactured by heating whey in a tank to a temperature below that at which curd will form, preferably 75.degree. C., and pumping the heated whey to a treatment channel through a heating chamber in proximity thereto. The whey is further heated in the heating chamber to a temperature suitable for curd formation, preferably 85.degree. C., and is sprayed in the treatment chamber with a coagulant liquid, the resulting curd being swept along the channel by an endless blade conveyor to an endless band conveyor which conveys the curd to a discharge station. The apparatus disclosed includes two tanks to which whey is alternately supplied and in which the whey is heated to ensure a continuous supply of heated whey to the heating chamber. The whey from the heating chamber enters the treatment channel through a perforated partition in proximity to which are located spray nozzles for the coagulant liquid.

  • Patent number: 4448298
Abstract: There is described a rotary trough type cooling bed run-in apparatus for dropping the roll bars of a steel round bar mill onto a cooling bed in an aligned state at high speed and absent the warpage associated with similar devices. Several troughs each having a longitudinal opening and an axial opening are rotatably mounted. A roll bar is introduced axially into each of said troughs following which said opening is closed off by a cover to ensure that said bar will not be prematurely ejected. As said troughs move downwardly said covers are simultaneously removed to expose the enclosed bars and these are allowed to fall downwardly onto a cooling bed.

  • Patent number: 4412828
Abstract: An easy to operate control means for shifting gears on dual shift bicycles is described. The control means is constructed so that the front and rear derailleurs of a dual shift bicycle are controlled together to shift to any selected gear from any engaged gear with a single operator action. The design permits the operator to preselect the new gear to be used while continuously pedaling in the present gear, with the actual gear change being made at the operator's discretion. The design also facilitates a rapid series of up shifts or down shifts without requiring intervening gear selections.

  • Patent number: 4382503
Abstract: Disclosed is a walking beam and more particularly its driving mechanisms whereby a material placed on a plurality of stationary beams for transfer, e.g., a steel product such as a steel pipe or round bar is raised from below, moved forward and lowered again onto the stationary beams by a plurality of transfer beams and this process is repeated to effect the transfer of the material. Each of the driving mechanisms includes a first link for causing the transfer beam to make a circular motion and the first link is rotatable about a supporting shaft with a radius of rotation l. The supporting shaft is fitted in the forward end of a second link and is rotatable about a main rotating shaft with a radius of rotation 2l. Mounted also on the supporting shaft is a first gear which is rotatable along with the first link and the first gear is in mesh with a second gear mounted on the main rotating shaft.

  • Patent number: 4378993
Abstract: A desired number of cables are drawn, along with the falling charge, into a blast furnace from its top and the forward ends of the cables are melted upon reaching the melting zone in the furnace. The length of each of the cables to its melted end is measured in accordance with the result of a voltage pulse response measurement utilizing the distributed constant circuit characteristics of the cable, and the height level of the melting zone inside the furnace is measured from the cable length by correcting it for the amount of deflection of the cable within the furnace. By measuring the cable length at each of a plurality of radial locations of the furnace, it is possible to estimate the three-dimensional shape of the upper boundary of the melting zone with a high degree of accuracy.

  • Patent number: 4319689
Abstract: A high-rise storage rack is constructed of a plurality of vertical frames each having a front and rear column with the rear columns of the vertical frames being interconnected by means of down-aisle ties to brace the same against down-aisle forces and lateral column buckling. The front columns are supported against down-aisle forces and lateral column buckling by means of braced frame assemblies whereby there is no need for any down-aisle ties between the front columns of the vertical frames. Thus, the entry for a shuttle table or other pallet engaging mechanism of an automated storage and retrieval system is totally unobstructed and there is a minimum of unused storage space in the vertical direction between the storage areas.
