  • Patent number: 5653965
Abstract: Stable, water-based formulations containing high levels of water insoluble UV protectants/insecticides are provided herein as sprayable microemulsions containing a film-forming polymer, e.g. Agrimer.RTM. VEMA ES 425 [poly(methyl vinyl ether-maleic acid monobutyl ester)]. The polymers are solubilized either by partial neutralization with a base, or by emulsification with appropriate emulsifiers. These formulations produce single phase, micro- or mini-emulsions (particle size<1 micron) on dilution with water. The formulations are useful as UV protectants in veterinary use, for protection of UV-labile insecticides, and for "pour on" applications.

  • Patent number: 5645859
Abstract: A process is provided for making a free-flowing powder of a complex of an alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA) and/or a beta-hydroxy acid (BHA) and a vinylpyrrolidone (PVP) polymer, copolymer or graft polymers, as the complexing agent, at high acid loadings, preferably 20-60% by weight. The presence of VP polymers, copolymers or graft polymers in the complex reduces the skin irritation effect of the acid when applied to the skin of the user. The process involves applying an aqueous solution or slurry of the acid to PVP, and, substantially immediately thereafter, evaporating the water to form a free-flowing powder of the complex of the acid and VP polymers, copolymers or graft polymers.

  • Patent number: 5637876
Abstract: A method for determining a level of exposure to radiation utilizes a radiation dosimeter comprising a substrate provided with a radiation sensitive layer or patch having an optical density which varies in accordance with the degree of radiation exposure. In addition, the substrate is provided with optically readable coding which identifies encoded mathematical parameters for enabling an automated calculation of dosage from a detected post-exposure optical density of the radiation sensitive material. The method comprises the step of optically measuring the optical density of the layer of radiation sensitive material prior to exposure thereof to radiation. In addition, the coding on the dosimeter substrate is scanned to automatically determine the encoded mathematical parameters. The method further comprises the steps of exposing the radiation sensitive layer to radiation and optically measuring a post-exposure optical density of the layer of radiation sensitive material.

  • Patent number: 5614173
Abstract: A hair spray composition of 80% or less VOC includes a fixative which is the half-ester of a copolymer of maleic anhydride and methyl vinyl ether having advantageous physical and performance properties even at low fixative levels. The copolymer is made by polymerizing the monomers at a selected temperature in the presence of a predetermined amount of a polymerization initiator whose decomposition fragments are soluble in hydroalcoholic solutions containing high levels of water. The composition is clear and without precipitate formation, has a low weight average molecular weight and a narrow molecular weight distribution or polydispersity, affording a low solution viscosity. The composition also forms a spray pattern of small particle size, providing clear, hard fixative films with superior adhesion to the hair of the user, an advantageous high humidity curl retention (hold), and low tack and dry times, in both pump and aerosol products.
