Abstract: A fountain applicator for applying coating liquid onto a web of paper carried past the applicator, has a coating liquid flow path that includes a curved surface along which a sheet of the coating liquid is flowed to subject the sheet to centrifugal force to cause air entrained in the coating liquid to move away from one side of the sheet that is toward the curved surface, so that the one side is relatively free of entrained air. After being flowed along the curved surface, the sheet of coating liquid is directed toward the web in a free standing jet curtain of coating liquid, to contact the web surface primarily with the one relatively air-free side of the coating liquid sheet to decrease the occurrence of skip coating on the web surface, especially when the web is traveling past the applicator at high speeds. The coating is applied in excess onto the web surface and is metered and leveled to a desired coat weight by a downstream doctor.
Abstract: The contact lens system includes a large contact lens worn on the eye and a hard contact lens worn over the soft contact. One of the lenses is transparent. The other lens has an opaque area to prevent light from entering the eye except at a circular transparent area, to provide a piggyback light occluding lens system.
Abstract: A clip-on wear plate to protect the downwardly facing flat surface of the pedestal opening of a railway truck is provided. The wear plate has a first flat surface in contact with the downwardly facing flat surface of the pedestal and an opposed second surface in contact with the bearing adaptor. The first surface is provided with a relatively high coefficient of friction relative to the second surface to an minimize movement of the wear plate.
Abstract: To ensure the original state of the contents of a receptacle, the stopper comprises inwardly oriented blocking attachments on a surrounding tear-off sealing ring, with the blocking attachments gripping below an outwardly oriented annular projection of the receptacle. The blocking attachments are formed by lateral slides which cooperate with an inner contour sleeve. The sealing ring is respectively connected by a single tear-off web centrally between two adjacent blocking attachments to the upper circumferential wall. As a result, the finished stopper can be slid from the contour sleeve after cooling to 80.degree., the blocking attachments being smoothly guided on the guide surfaces of the contour sleeve. The sealing ring bulges elastically between two adjacent tear-off webs and subsequently assumes its original circular shape again.
Abstract: A pump that is in essence leak-proof and prevents the escape to ambient atmosphere of environmentally hazardous fluent materials is comprised of an outlet block defining a pump chamber having a fluid inlet and a fluid outlet, a piston having one end reciprocable within the pump chamber and sealed to the outlet block, a piston rod connected to the other end of the piston for reciprocating the piston, a dynamic block secured to the outlet block and defining a sealed dynamic chamber within which the other end of the piston reciprocates, and an outlet from the dynamic chamber in continuous closed-circuit communication with a recirculating system for preventing escape into the environment of any fluent material that may leak past the piston seal. The pump also includes an articulated seal for sealing the piston rod to the dynamic chamber to maintain the sealed integrity of the chamber while at the same time accommodating reciprocation of the piston rod.
Abstract: A storage holder for a condiment bottle, such as a bottle of catsup having a cap, includes a base, and an upright support for the bottle, which supports the bottle on an angle relative to horizontal, with the cap facing downwardly. Upon removal of the bottle from the holder, and upon removal of the cap, initial pouring of the condiment from the bottle is greatly facilitated.
Abstract: A tie collar having an upper wall for supporting a rail, an upper receptacle for receiving a cross tie, and a lower enlarged ground engaging portion is provided with an improved double wall feature for connecting the ends of the upper wall to the lower portion, and pedestal supports for supporting the primary and secondary ties in the construction of a railway crossing.
Abstract: A roll-type screen assembly is provided with lateral guide rails adjacent the sides of an opening with a window or door. The guide rails guide the lateral edges of the screen and contain an inflatable tube along the length thereof. A small hand pump with a release valve is employed to releasably lock the edges of the screen.
Abstract: Like-new golf balls are made from used golf balls by first reducing the diameter of the used ball, to provide an intermediate ball, and then molding a new dimpled cover on the ball. The diameter of the used ball is uniformly reduced by compression molding or by grinding.
Abstract: An evaporative element or cartridge especially useful in humidifiers comprises a plurality of stacked slit and expanded wicking paper layers, and means for supporting the wicking paper. The supporting means may comprise a layer of slit and expanded metal sandwiched in between the stacked wicking paper layers. The stacked wicking paper and metal layers are held together with an adhesive. Alternatively, the supporting means may comprise a rigid frame on the side edges of the stacked wicking paper layers, the frame having prongs engaging the wicking paper layers. Each layer of stacked wicking paper is staggered with respect to adjoining layers. The wicking paper has superior capillary rise of 79 to 112 mm/min.
Abstract: A backwind feature is provided on a line-receiving winch and is particularly suitable for use on high capacity sailboat winches. The winch includes a main drive train to drive the drum of the winch in a winding direction and to prevent rotation in the opposite direction. A planetary gear assembly is provided on the output shaft of the winch, which permits independent rotation of the drum by a separate worm drive, without the need to disconnect any portion of the main drive.
Abstract: An interchangeable display system including a mounting for a display element, the mounting including a support backing and upper, center and lower face panels mounted to the support backing and spaced forwardly of the support backing with two elongated slots extending lengthwise between the respective face display elements and which cooperates with the upper slot, and a lower mounting hook on the back of the display element cooperates with the lower slot so that the two hooks retain the display element and can slide along the respective slots to assemble and disassemble the display element in position in front of the mounting. The display element itself may have face panels separated by a slot so that a superimposed display element provided with a mounting hook on the back thereof can be mounted in front of the display element.
Abstract: This protection case (51) is adapted to fit remote controls having different size. To that aim, it comprises at least two opposite shells (52, 53) made of a shockproof material and being adjustable in position to suit the remote control dimensions.
Abstract: Environmentally friendly, disposable, degradable and/or recyclable plastic articles are made from water soluble, miscible, high molecular weight, thermoplastic, polymeric resin blends that are comprised by weight of about 65% to 95% high molecular weight water soluble thermoplastic resin having an inverse solubility characteristic and about 35% to 5% of at least one of certain high molecular weight thermoplastic polymers that are functionally compatible (miscible) with the inversely soluble resin. The articles are insoluble when used for their intended purposes, but become soluble when exposed to tepid or cool water and degradable when buried in a land fill or compost. The inversely soluble resin comprises high molecular weight poly(ethylene oxide). The compatible polymer is selected from the group consisting of Nylon 11, Nylon 12, polycaprolactone, polycaprolactone, polyethylene-co-acrylic acid, polyethylene-co-methacrylic acid, polyethylene-co-vinylacetate and polyethylene-co-vinylalcohol.
Abstract: Highly reliable measurements of the fluid and/or fluid flow in a conduit are obtained by insertion within the conduit, upstream of a fluid measuring or sampling device, of a fluid flow straigntening and displacement apparatus which serves to stabilize, homogenize and condition the fluid flow and form at the device a uniform, axially centered, axially symmetrical, well defined and accurately measurable flow profile of large means flow diameter. The flow straightening and fluid displacement apparatus comprises, in sequence in the direction of fluid flow, a first swirl mitigating and flow straightening device, a fluid displacement member comprised of two oppositely facing frustums jointed at their larger ends and mounted coaxially within the conduit, and a second flow straightening device. Advantageous combinations of the flow straightening and fluid displacement apparatus with known measuring and sampling devices are provided.
