  • Patent number: 8097981
Abstract: An AC/DC power converter which charges a secondary battery from an AC power supply and also converts power from the secondary battery to the AC voltage is provided. A capacitor C is connected to DC terminals of the four reverse-conductive type semiconductor switches in a single-phase bridge structure, and a secondary battery is connected via a DC inductance to the semiconductor switches. The semiconductor switches are connected via an AC inductance L with an AC power supply and opposing pairs of the semiconductor switches are alternately turned ON/OFF in synchronization with the phase of the supply voltage. When an AC power supply with a frequency which is lower than the resonance frequency of the LC is connected, the switching will be carried out in a zero-voltage-zero-current condition and AC/DC reversible power conversion is possible just through the control of the gate phase of the switches.

  • Patent number: 7095767
Abstract: A near field optical apparatus comprising a conductive sheet or plane having an aperture therein, with the conductive plane including at least one protrusion which extends into the aperture. The location, structure and configuration of the protrusion or protrusions can be controlled to provide desired near field localization of optical power output associated with the aperture. Preferably, the location, structure and configuration of the protrusion are tailored to maximize near field localization at generally the center of the aperture. The aperture preferably has a perimeter dimension which is substantially resonant with the output wavelength of the light source, or is otherwise able to support a standing wave of significant amplitude. The apparatus may be embodied in a vertical cavity surface emitting layer or VCSEL having enhanced nearfield brightness by providing a conductive layer on the laser emission facet, with a protrusion of the conductive layer extending into an aperture in the emission facet.

  • Patent number: 6950930
Abstract: A pipeline video decoder and decompression system handles a plurality of separately encoded bit streams arranged as a single serial bit stream of digital bits and having separately encoded pairs of control codes and corresponding data carried in the serial bit stream. The pipeline system employs a plurality of interconnected stages to decode and decompress the single bit stream, including a start code detector. When in a search mode, the start code detector searches for a specific start code corresponding to one of multiple compression standards. The start code detector responding to the single serial bit stream generates control tokens and data tokens. A respective one of the tokens includes a plurality of data words. Each data word has an extension bit which indicates a presence of additional words therein. The data words are thereby unlimited in number.

  • Patent number: 6895463
Abstract: The present invention provides an apparatus and method for efficiently running an execution image containing instructions for running a computer program in a set-top box. A non-volatile memory stores a compressed version of the execution image. A volatile memory is configured to execute the execution image. A computing unit transfers and decompresses the compressed version of the execution image from the non-volatile memory to the volatile memory where the execution image in non-compressed form can be executed efficiently.

  • Patent number: 6842407
Abstract: The present invention provides a method for guiding a pick-up head to follow an information track. The method comprises the steps of sensing and sending notification of displacement between the pick-up head and the center of the information track, generating a first correction directly proportional to the displacement, generating from the first correction a second correction non-proportional to the displacement, generating a third correction from an amplified tracking error signal and generating a driving force proportional to the sum of the second and third corrections, driving the pick-up head to follow the information track.

  • Patent number: 6836483
Abstract: An asynchronous transfer mode system operates using virtual addresses VPI and VCI. Cells including these addresses are received. The data associated with these cells is stored in a table. The table contents are advantageously accessed according to a connection number. The proper connection number is more easily found by using two variables. A first variable is associated with a number of active connections. A second variable is associated with the last-used index in the table.

  • Patent number: 6814897
Abstract: The invention relates to methods for making mold tools. More particularly, the mold tools are used for molding a resin substrate which has fine pits, i.e., concavities and protuberances. The invention also pertains to a method for manufacturing a resin substrate. Such resin substrates may be used as an optical disk, a magnetic disk, a hard disk, etc., for recording data. According to a preferred embodiment of the invention, a first metallic (Ni) mold tool (father) is made which is a duplicate of a master substrate, then a resin mold tool (mother) is made which is a duplicate of the first metallic mold tool and finally a second metallic (Ni) mold tool (son) is made which is a duplicate of the resin mold tool. Both the father and son may be referred to a “stamper”. The invention also relates to methods of manufacturing a mold tool for molding the base of an optical disk having at least one signal recording region and at least one non-signal recording region.

  • Patent number: 6799246
Abstract: A memory interface for connecting a bus to memory comprises an input, a buffer, an address input, a generator, and a writer. The input receives a plurality of data words from the bus. The buffer buffers the data words received from the bus. The address input receives from the bus addresses associated with the plurality of data words. The generator generates a series of addresses in the memory into which the buffered data words may be written. The series of addresses are derived from the received addresses. The writer writes the buffered data words into the memory at the generated addresses.
