  • Patent number: 8344993
Abstract: A backlight device for LCD displays can include a light-emitting source of the type that includes a cold-cathode or hot-cathode fluorescent tube that is lit with a high-frequency power supply. The high-frequency power supply can be PWM-controlled to adjust the brightness. The high-frequency power supply can also be randomly phase-modulated with an irregular modulation code to light the fluorescent tube. This enables the infrared radiation from the fluorescent tube to be spread over a wider band such that the level thereof is lowered to a level that does not interfere with typical remote controls.

  • Patent number: 8344608
Abstract: A long-life hot cathode fluorescent lamp can include a pair of parallel lead wires that can be arranged at each end of a tube. A coiled filament can be connected at its opposite end portions to the lead wires. The coiled filament can have two long pitched regions in which a coil pitch is longer than regions outside of the long pitched regions. Emitter can be located in a region defined between the two long pitched regions. Shape characteristics and intensive current flow obtained by the presence of the long pitched regions can form the origins of discharge near the boundaries between long and short pitched regions. Accordingly, stable discharge can be achieved with the origins of discharge located at ends of the emitter. As a result, the hot cathode fluorescent lamp is allowed to have a long life and stable light emission characteristics.

  • Patent number: 8345096
Abstract: The disclosed subject matter relates to a sensor and apparatus for vehicle height and slant measurement which can include a light source, and two cameras with respective lenses. The light source can be configured to emit light towards a road, and both cameras can be configured to receive the image of the road that is illuminated by the light from the light source and to thereby create image data. The apparatus can include a control circuit that can geometrically measure a vehicle height in accordance with the image data. The sensor can also receive image data from different points and from two light sources, and the apparatus can detect a vehicular lean using the different vehicle heights. Thus, because the sensors of the disclosed subject matter do not necessarily include a moving part as in the conventional sensor, the sensors can be easily attached to a vehicle body and can also be used for a vehicular lean detection.

  • Patent number: 8330034
Abstract: A musical accompaniment system is described including a fretted, stringed electric musical instrument, a floor unit, interface units and connecting cables. Designated frets of the instrument are divided into sections that output to a switching component that sends MIDI note # data to a synthesizer when strings of instrument contact designated fret sections. The floor unit includes actuators that output to the synthesizer when tapped by the user. The user taps on the actuators with his or her feet and thereby actuates accompaniment notes that are generated in the rhythms in which they are tapped. Accompaniment notes generated by the process are designated by notes and chords being fingered on the instrument. Methods are described that facilitate the actuating and generating of accompaniment notes in the musical style of traditional bass accompaniment through the use of the system.

  • Patent number: 8314540
Abstract: A color converted light emitting apparatus is provided that has excellent light emission characteristics and can be manufactured while a viscosity suitable for a printing method is maintained. The color converted light emitting apparatus can include a light emitting element and a color conversion layer containing a phosphor that is excited by light emitted from the light emitting element and which emits fluorescent light. The color conversion layer can further contain, as first and second thickeners, two types of particles with different average primary particle diameters. The average primary particle diameter of the second thickener can be less than one half of the average primary particle diameter of the first thickener. By appropriately adjusting the average primary particle diameters and the amounts of the thickeners added, the light emission characteristics and the emission chromaticity can be improved.

  • Patent number: 8294162
Abstract: An LED device and an LED lighting apparatus using the same can include a casing including a cavity and at least one pair of LED chips including a first and second LED chips. The LED chips can be adjacently located in the cavity, and an encapsulating resin including a phosphor can be disposed in the cavity so as to encapsulate the LED chips. A light-emitting surface of the first LED chip can be covered with a transparent resin, and therefore color temperatures of light emitted from the first and second LED chips can be located on a substantially black body due to a difference between their distances to the encapsulating resin. Thus, the LED lighting apparatus using the LED device can selectively emit white light having a preferable color temperature that is close to a natural color between the color temperatures by adjusting current applied to the LED chips.

  • Patent number: 8290669
Abstract: A system for controlling an engine of a vehicle can include: an engine, a transmission, a coupling, and a controller. The controller can be configured to adjust a speed of the engine output shaft based on a comparison of a shaft speed of the input shaft with a shaft speed limit when an operator of the vehicle changes from a first one of the plurality of speed ratios to a second one of the plurality of speed ratios. This control can occur during a downshift, for example, when the second one of the plurality of speed ratios is numerically greater than the first one of the speed ratios. Thus, the controller can be configured to protect the engine and the vehicle from shift shock when a sensor in the control system for the transmission has failed.
