Patent number: 4808017Abstract: A character display is pivotably mounted on an electronic typewriter for pivotable movement from an open position for viewing the character display to a closed position for covering the keyboard. The character display has a pivot axis in alignment with a rotatable axis of the platen. A structure for pivotably mounting the character display includes a spring operable to dampen the pivotable movement of the character display near the closed position. A brake pad combined with the dampening spring holds the character display in manually selected positions near the open position. A paper support which covers a platen and an adjacent open area is combined with the character display located in the closed position to provide a cover for the typewriter.Type: GrantFiled: September 23, 1987Date of Patent: February 28, 1989Assignee: Smith Corona CorporationInventors: Howard F. Patent number: 4743128Abstract: A single solenoid is connected to a ribbon feed mechanism which is selectively operable either to feed a print ribbon or to lift and feed an error correction tape. A print hammer solenoid is operable to condition the ribbon feed mechanism either for feeding the print ribbon or lifting and feeding the error correction tape. To feed the print ribbon, an electronic circuit energizes the print hammer solenoid before energizing the ribbon feed solenoid in response to depressing a character key. To lift and feed the error correction tape, the electronic circuit energizes the print hammer solenoid after energizing the ribbon feed solenoid in response to depressing a correction key.Type: GrantFiled: December 10, 1986Date of Patent: May 10, 1988Assignee: Smith Corona CorporationInventors: Kenneth D. Vought, Hans W. Mueller

Patent number: 4678351Abstract: An electronic typewriter has a right margin zone hyphenation system operable with an error correction function to provide a reasonably aligned right margin of printed lines on a work sheet. To hyphen a word or a partial word printed in the hyphenation zone, the operator positions a print mechanism to a hyphen position within the word and depresses a hyphen key. The electronics automatically erases the characters at the hyphen position and to the right of the hyphen position, prints a hyphen at the hyphen position, moves the print mechanism to a left margin, indexes the work sheet and prints the characters erased from the preceding line at the left margin on the next line. The hyphenation system is also operable to automatically erase an entire word in the hyphenation zone and reprint the word on the next line.Type: GrantFiled: June 23, 1986Date of Patent: July 7, 1987Assignee: SCM CorporationInventor: Charles M. Curley

Patent number: 4655620Abstract: An electronic typewriter with an electronic spelling dictionary feature included therein automatically adds a code signal to a code memory register corresponding to a print position of a printed error. The printed error is detected by the dictionary feature in response to printing operations. The electronic typewriter also automatically repositions a print hammer of a printing mechanism to the printed error position from a position beyond the printed error. This is accomplished by an operator actuating a key or a multiple key sequence for finding the printed error by the electronics searching for and finding the added code signal.Type: GrantFiled: December 26, 1985Date of Patent: April 7, 1987Assignee: SCM CorporationInventors: Donald T. Adams, R. William Gray

Patent number: 4435098Abstract: An improved typewriter escapement disengagement and engagement mechanism wherein a separator member disengages the escapement mechanism from the carriage rack to prevent damage to the mechanism and/or rack during transport of the typewriter. A restraining means prevents the carriage from moving while the escapement mechanism is disengaged. When the restraining means is removed causing carriage movement, the separator member is automatically removed from between the escapement mechanism and the carriage rack and the escapement mechanism is engaged.Type: GrantFiled: March 22, 1982Date of Patent: March 6, 1984Assignee: SCM CorporationInventor: William E. Cleveland

Patent number: 4365904Abstract: A linespacing apparatus includes a slip clutch assembly which is driven by an electric motor. The slip clutch assembly includes a face cam which drives a linkage which, in turn, indexes a platen in order to linespace the platen. The face cam includes an abutment portion which abruptly halts the motion of the linkage and the slip clutch assembly prevents bounce or recoil of the linkage thereby promoting smooth operation of the apparatus. The linkage may be adjusted by an operator to vary the amount of rotation of the platen during each operating stroke of the linkage.Type: GrantFiled: April 14, 1981Date of Patent: December 28, 1982Assignee: SCM CorporationInventors: Hans W. Patent number: 4364679Abstract: A cartridge ribbon lift apparatus is provided in which a pivotally mounted cartridge, containing a ribbon, is pivoted upward to a printing position by a linkage which is operated by a solenoid. When the cartridge reaches the printing position a second linkage latches the cartridge in the printing position for repeat and burst speed printing and the cartridge remains in the printing position as long as the solenoid remains energized. While the cartridge is latched in the printing position the first linkage is restored to its initial operating position.Type: GrantFiled: February 17, 1981Date of Patent: December 21, 1982Assignee: SCM CorporationInventors: Scott J. Patent number: 4131374Abstract: A ribbon feed mechanism for typewriters operable to incrementally feed a ribbon with a dual segment continuous motion ribbon feed. The ribbon is advanced an initial segment by a power actuated linkage and advanced a final segment by a spring urged arm acting on a multi-toothed cam. The initial segment feed occurs when a bellcrank is pivoted, and through a linkage, urges a ribbon metering shaft to rotate which, in turn, feeds the ribbon. Simultaneously, a spring biased cam follower is gradually displaced by the multi-toothed cam which is supported on the metering shaft. The final segment feed occurs as the spring biased cam follower is rapidly displaced down a cam surface of a tooth on the multi-toothed cam.Type: GrantFiled: August 18, 1977Date of Patent: December 26, 1978Assignee: SCM CorporationInventor: Richard F. Porterfield

Patent number: 4063631Abstract: An adjustable paper guide for a typewriter having a paper chute defined by a paper table and an erasure table spaced therefrom. The paper guide includes a sleeve member and a yieldable guide member. The sleeve member includes a guiding surface that extends upward from the top surface of the erasure table and the yieldable guide member includes a guiding surface that extends from the erasure table to engage the paper table. The guiding surfaces guide an edge of a sheet of paper during paper insertion and during paper realignment. The paper table includes a plurality of gripping rollers for feeding paper whereby releasing the contact of the gripping rollers on the paper also releases the paper table. The erasure table is pivotally supported for movement from a closed position to an open position. The yieldable guide member remains engaged with the paper table irrespective of the positions of the paper table and/or erasure table.Type: GrantFiled: December 13, 1976Date of Patent: December 20, 1977Assignee: SCM CorporationInventors: Robert M.
