  • Patent number: 4509677
Abstract: Disclosed is a valve for mixing hot and cold water and providing for accurate outlet temperature control to within .+-.1.degree. C. Valve consists of a hollow body closed at one end and including an internal sleeve located by two annular flanges that define chambers between the sleeve and the body communicating, respectively, with hot and cold water inlets. Each chamber communicates with the interior of the sleeve by a radially directed passageway. A piston slides within the sleeve between a first valve seat formed by a face of a third annular flange extending inwardly of the sleeve above the cold water passageway to close the cold water passageway and leave the hot water passageway open and a second valve seat located at the bottom of the sleeve to close the hot water passageway and leave the cold water passageway open.

  • Patent number: 4510551
Abstract: The portable memory module disclosed herein is constructed in a compact cylindrical form facilitating its use in oceanographic and environmental data acquisition environments. Individual integrated circuit memory components are carried and interconnected by a flexible printed circuit, the components being oriented in columns with pin lines parallel to the axis of a cylindrical battery casing to permit the circuit to be rolled around that casing. The battery casing and rolled printed circuit are then inserted in a protective outer casing, also cylindrical.

  • Patent number: 4499788
Abstract: In order to simplify the construction and to accelerate the change-over of two drive units in the case of a feeding device having a drive shaft and two gear units each drivable by a motor, which gear units are able to be connected alternately to the drive shaft such that each may alternately rotate with the drive shaft independently of the other, it is suggested that both gear units are designed as slip-on gear units and have a driven hollow shaft, that the two ends of the drive shaft each have the hollow shaft of one of the two slip-on gear units mounted around them in a manner permitting relative rotation, that the gear units are secured against rotation about the axis of rotation defined by the drive shaft and that rotary couples are provided, such that one of the hollow shafts at a time is connected to the drive shaft such that the connected hollow shaft secured against rotation relative to the drive shaft.

  • Patent number: 4499778
Abstract: A flexure mount particularly adapted for use in a dynamically tuned gyroscope provides a universal coupling between a rotor element and a drive shaft. The mount features a substantially planar "spider" member oriented transversely to the spin axis of the rotor. The spider has four webs that each extend radially from an inner gimbal ring to a segmented outer ring having four independent sectors each associated with and centered on one of the webs. Two mutually perpendicular "vertical" or cross flexure members each have key portions that extend through radial slots in the webs of the spider. The inner gimbal ring and the spider have central apertures coaxial with the spin axis. An alignment member is seated in the aligned apertures. The vertical flexure members are seated in a set of mutually perpendicular and axially extending slots formed in the alignment member. The spider and the cross members are preferably etched or stamped from precision rolled sheet material.

  • Patent number: 4499889
Abstract: An improved heating apparatus, for example for use as a wood or coal burning parlor stove and providing a significant heat output, has a construction for reducing thermally induced mechanical stress and for enabling the interior baffle assembly components of the apparatus to be removed therefrom, for replacement if necessary, without dismantling the apparatus exterior frame. The elements of the interior baffle assembly are interconnecting and are secured in a mechanically stable configuration by single point connection to the apparatus frame. The apparatus can have primary and secondary combustion chambers and a baffle system for directing flue gases along a circuitous path from the secondary combustion chamber to an exit aperture whereby a significant proportion of the heat of said gases is given up to the apparatus. A vertically oriented downwardly directed two component baffle separates the combustion chambers.

  • Patent number: 4500003
Abstract: A tester/sorter for performing electrical tests on axial lead devices such as diodes at a very high throughput rate carries the devices on the periphery of a rotating wheel. A contactor assembly periodically makes electrical connection with one or more of the axial lead devices. A flying arm assembly mounts the contactor assembly so that it travels through a closed loop path of motion with respect to the wheel. In a first path portion, mechanical controls acting on the flying arm assembly lower the contactor assembly into electrical contact with the leads of the device. Once in electrical connection, there is no relative motion between the contactor assembly and the leads. After the test is completed, the mechanical controls lift the contactor assembly away from the leads and return it to its starting position. This travel is substantially free of mechanical impacts that could produce vibrations and thereby degrade the accuracy of the testing.

  • Patent number: 4494545
Abstract: An externally generated myriametric frequency magnetic carrier signal is resonantly reflected by a tuned coil in an implant. The lagging phase angle of the reflected signal is modulated at very low power by varying the impedance across the tuned coil in accordance with a data input signal. An external phase shift demodulator recovers the transmitted data. To assure adequate coupling between the external unit and the implant, the output level of an external phase comparator must exceed a given threshold to signify "acquisition" before data is transmitted from the implant. In a preferred embodiment, a shunt circuit across the tuned coil is opened and closed in accordance with a digital input signal generated by the implant. The external telemetry unit preferably includes a coaxially spaced triple coil assembly. The middle coil transmits the carrier. The outer pickup coils are balanced to minimize carrier reception. For two-way communication an IR transmitter is added to the coil assembly.

  • Patent number: 4495460
Abstract: This invention is directed to a digital feedback control system. The control system includes a controlled device which generates an output signal representative of the operation of that device, with that output signal being a relatively high frequency carrier signal having a relatively slowly varying (compared to the carrier signal) envelope. The control system further includes a difference network for generating an error signal representative of the difference between an input command signal and a sensor signal derived from the output signal of the controlled device. A feedback network is responsive to the output signal to provide the sensor signal. The feedback network includes a selectively operative integrator which generates an integrated signal representative of the integral of the output signal. The feedback system further includes a selectively operable network for resetting the integrator.

  • Patent number: 4492063
Abstract: The invention relates to a glass fibre-reinforced, extruded plastics material hollow profiled strip for the production of window frames, glass doors, or the like. In order to be able to butt-weld profiled strips of this type together when producing the frame and to ensure a reliable bonding between the glass fibres and the plastics material of the profiled strips a synthetic resin is used as the bonding agent which causes this bonding, which synthetic resin has thermoplastic or thermoelastic properties and thus enables the glass fibres to be deflected during butt-welding and pressing together of the ends of the frame pieces.

  • Patent number: 4492513
Abstract: The invention relates to a manipulation system for workpieces, in which the individual workpieces are gripped by manipulator gripping arms and transported to predetermined locations in processing and/or magazine stations. For permitting a technically simple manipulation and transport of workpieces of different shapes by the use of tongs as gripping tools provided at the gripping arms, the invention provides that to an easily accessible wall of the respective workpiece a handling member is secured which is so designed and arranged as to permit the tongs to engage this handling member for transporting the workpiece e.g. from a magazine to the machine tool. Suitably, this handling member is in the form of a hollow pin which with an enlarged base is bonded to the workpiece and, after processing, may be knocked off or separated from the workpiece in some other manner.
