  • Patent number: 5614826
Abstract: A composite spin lock prepulse method compensates for magnetic field inhomogeneities in objects or materials under study using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The effective magnetic field seen by an object or material under study using NMR often is characterized by an off-resonance component, which results in the magnetization of the object or material having a component that diverges from the intended orientation after RF pulses. The method according to the present invention recognizes and utilizes the observation that aligning the off-resonance component of the magnetization in the x-z plane can be achieved when the amplitude of a preceding 90.degree. y flip pulse is known, and that the effective field can be placed in alignment with the resulting magnetization, if necessary or desired, by adjusting the amplitude of the locking pulse as a function of the amplitude of the flip pulse.

  • Patent number: 5611163
Abstract: Detachable chevron-shaped panels that fit within chevron-shaped apertures in the cover of an exit sign. The panels are dimensioned to fit integrally into the apertures in order to withstand years of stress, temperature changes, and wear and tear but continue to perform in a light-fast and reliable manner. Yet they may be easily installed from the exterior of the exit sign, with minimum risk that they will fall into the interior during installation. Surprisingly, the present devices permit such easy installation without the need to use conventional "slide `n` snap" exit sign arrow fasteners that usually allow reliable installation but have proven to be destructive of a secure fit and light fastness. The panel accomplishes this by employing at least three tabs positioned in a certain manner about the perimeter of each wing of the panel which engage the (preferably bevelled) edge of the chevron-shaped aperture.

  • Patent number: 5605184
Abstract: The invention relates to an apparatus for debarking logs individually with the aid of high-pressure water jets. The spray nozzles are intended to spray water in focused jets against the log at the same time as the log moves past the spray nozzles. The invention is characterized by a ring (22) through which the log is intended to be fed, in that units (42, 46, 46') are mounted on the inside of the ring, uniformly distributed about the periphery of the said ring, which units are intended to bear against the surface of the log passing through the ring, in that a spray nozzle (40) is arranged in each such unit, which spray nozzle is made to maintain an essentially constant distance from the surface of the log by means of the fact that the unit bears against the surface of the log, this distance lying within a range of distance from the surface of the log which is optimal for debarking.

  • Patent number: 5604266
Abstract: The present invention is directed to a rigid or semirigid, filled resin material having a continuous phase which is a matrix containing a complex crosslinked network having an unsaturated polyester-polyurethene containing resin having fine multisize reinforcing particles and dispersed filler particles dispersed therein. The polyester-polyurethene network of the complex crosslinked network may interact with other polymer networks in the continuous phase either by crosslinking or by forming an interpenetrating polymer network. The complex crosslinked network immobilizes the fine multisize reinforcing particles and reacts with at least a surface layer of the dispersed filler particles. The present invention is also directed to a process for preparing the above rigid or semirigid, lightweight resin material, and to a composition for use in this process.

  • Patent number: 5603574
Abstract: A fluid-dampened support for a bearing such as a tilt pad bearing or a rolling element bearing such as a ball bearing, needle bearing, roller bearing and the like. The fluid dampened support includes a network of closely spaced beams which act as structural springs which support the outer race of the roller bearing for movement in any direction. The spring rate or constant of these structural springs can be caused to change after a selected amount of deflection. The amount of deflection needed to cause the change in spring rate can be adjusted to suit the particular application. A liquid is provided in the spaces between the beams to dampen movement of the pads. The damping rate can be made to change with movement of the pads. The structure and space between the beams is designed so as to provide virtually any reasonable damping characteristics.

  • Patent number: 5602245
Abstract: A process for the preparation of 2',3' dideoxynucleosides, 2'-deoxynucleosides, and 2',3'-dideoxy-2',3'-didehydronucleosides is provided that includes the synchronous addition of a stereoselecting moiety (a directing group) and a protected purine or pyrimidine base to 5-(S)-6-(protected-oxy)-4,5-dihydrofuran in the presence of a Lewis acid. This one vessel reaction eliminates the need to separately prepare and purify a 2'-substituted ribose derivative that in a second step is condensed with a purine or pyrimidine base. The process can be easily modified to increase the stereoselectivity of formation of the .beta.-anomeric nucleoside as necessary.

  • Patent number: 5601887
Abstract: Cards and methods of securing hidden symbols on cards are disclosed. The cards, such as instant-win lottery tickets, utilize continuous overprint inks that mask the boundaries between their "secure" and "unsecure" portions to inhibit unscrupulous players from successfully tampering with them. By reformulating the overprint inks to permit a single set to be applied to both portions of a card, more vibrant and aesthetically-pleasing graphics may be displayed as well while utilizing fewer printing stations during the printing process.Alternatively or additionally, the cards may be embossed for added security. Raising portions of the secure area of a card above the remainder of its surface produces irregular features, thereby inhibiting both improper removal of the upper latex or other coating and photo reproduction of the card. The varying card height caused by embossing further inhibits heat-based tampering, as heat transfer to the irregular surface is no longer uniform.

  • Patent number: 5599796
Abstract: Methods and compositions for treating urogenital tumors, and particular, cancer of the prostate, bladder, and kidney, with BCNT, are disclosed. Any boron-containing compound that is sufficiently lipophilic to pass through the appropriate urogenital membranes in a quantity high enough to achieve therapy on irradiation with low-energy neutrons can be used. Carboranyl-containing nucleosides and oligonucleotides are particularly suited for use in BNCT of urogenital tumors. Preferred compounds include 5-carboranyl-2'-deoxyuridine (CDU) and 5-o-carboranyl-1-(2-deoxy-2-fluoro-.beta.-D-arabinofuranosyl)uracil (CFAU). Nucleosides and oligonucleotides bearing an -O-[(carboran-1-yl)alkyl]phosphate, S-[(carboran-1-yl)alkyl]phosphorothioate, or Se-[(carboran-1-yl)alkyl]phosphoroselenoate in place of the (carboran-1-yl)phosphonate moiety can be used.
