  • Patent number: 6568928
Abstract: A scroll-type compressor has a fixed scroll member, a movable scroll member, a front housing, a rear housing and a gasket seal. The fixed scroll member and the movable scroll member cooperate to form a compression region. The movable scroll member orbits relative to the fixed scroll member to compress refrigerant in the compression region. A movable scroll base plate of the movable scroll member forms a rear surface and a discharge hole substantially at the center of the movable scroll base plate. Pressure of the refrigerant discharged from the compression region is applied to the rear surface of the movable scroll base plate. The front housing accommodates the movable scroll member. The rear housing which is adjacent to the front housing, has the fixed scroll member inside. The gasket seal is located between the front housing and the rear housing.

  • Patent number: 6566247
Abstract: A semiconductor device having a barrier film comprising an extremely thin film formed of one or more monolayers each comprised of a two-dimensional array of metal atoms, in which more than one type of metal atom is provided in barrier film. In one exemplary aspect, the barrier film is used for preventing the diffusion of atoms of another material, such as a copper conductor, into a substrate, such as a semiconducting material or an insulating material. In one mode of making the semiconductor device, the barrier film is formed by depositing different types of precursors, such as metal halides (e.g., BaF2 and SrF2), onto the substrate material, and then annealing the resulting film on the substrate material to remove all of the constituents of the temporary heteroepitaxial film except for a monolayer of metal atoms left behind as attached to the surface of the substrate.

  • Patent number: 6531705
Abstract: A container for storing and transporting device containing radioactive materials used for medical procedures is disclosed. Such devices may include a radioactive shielding material which contains a portion of the radioactivity emitted by the radioactive material. The container has an upper portion and a lower portion, and at least one of the portions includes a radiation shielding material, such as lead, steel or other appropriate shielding materials. Devices containing radioactive material are placed within the container. The container secures the devices against lateral movement within the container. The radiation shielding material of the lower portion of the container may cooperate with the radiation shielding material of the device to contain more of the emitted radiation than is contained by the device alone. The container and the holder may be sterilizable to allow such devices to be transported and sterilized for medical use.

  • Patent number: 6524311
Abstract: A method of performing a surgical spinal fusion procedure to correct an abnormal spinal curvature preferably involves the use of an improved surgical implant spinal staple that has a main body portion, a pair of apertures and a plurality of tine members for fastening and anchoring the staple to a vertebral body. Most advantageously, the spinal staple includes integral structure for permitting direct attachment of a retaining rod, which lowers the profile of the combined staple and attachment mechanism with respect to conventional systems. The spinal fusion procedure further preferably includes a step of sculpting the attachment areas of the vertebral bodies to create recessed areas into which the spinal staples will be positioned and secured. This creates an implant that essentially has no profile with respect to the surrounding areas of the vertebral bodies.

  • Patent number: 6525926
Abstract: A modular multinode computing apparatus includes a rack mountable enclosure and more than one system board that is secured within the enclosure in a high density configuration that is preferably configured so that the system boards are positioned in substantially the same plane, which is also the plane in which the apparatus resides when mounted within a rack. The enclosure preferably has four system boards, and is sized as a 1 u form factor. When mounted in a rack with like units, the apparatus permits a data center or computing cluster to be fabricated that has a processing density that is much greater than conventional clusters that are configured with 1 u based single node units.

  • Patent number: 6514049
Abstract: A control valve is used in connection with a variable displacement compressor that varies the discharge capacity by controlling an inclination of a cam plate located in a crank chamber. The inclination of the cam plate is variable based on crank chamber pressure caused by refrigerant in the crank chamber. Monitor pressure is monitored at a predetermined point in a refrigerant circuit for causing a change in the crank chamber pressure and ultimately varying the discharge capacity. The control valve has a housing, an internal control valve mechanism and an external control valve mechanism. The internal control valve mechanism is located inside the valve housing and has a first valve body and a first reacting member. The first reacting member is connected to the first valve body for reacting to the monitor pressure to cause a change in the crank chamber pressure. The external control valve mechanism is located inside the valve housing and has a second valve body and a second reacting member.

  • Patent number: 6488186
Abstract: A closure for dispensing a viscous material such as mustard or ketchup from a container includes a threaded closure body having a dispensing orifice through which viscous material may flow during dispensing, and a collection space for collecting a volume of thin liquid that may form on top of the viscous material during storage. The collection space acts to intercept the thin liquid as the container is inverted to dispense the viscous material. As the material continues to be dispensed, the thin liquid is re-mixed into the material, thereby keeping the solid to liquid ratio of the material in the container relatively constant. Additionally, a valve may be placed in the orifice for at least partially precluding passage of the thin liquid through the orifice during initial dispensation.

  • Patent number: 6472675
Abstract: A container for storing and transporting needle cartridges containing radioactive materials used for medical procedures is disclosed. Such needle cartridges may include a radioactive shielding material which contains a portion of the radioactivity emitted by the radioactive material. The container of the present invention has an upper portion and a lower portion, and at least one of the portions includes a radiation shielding material, such as lead, steel or other appropriate shielding materials. Needle cartridges containing radioactive material are placed within the container for storage and shipping. The container secures the needle cartridges against lateral movement within the container to protect them from breakage or release of the radioactive materials contained in the needle cartridges. The radiation shielding material of the lower portion of the container may cooperate with the radiation shielding material of the device to container more of the emitted radiation that is contained by the device alone.
