  • Patent number: 5481285
Abstract: A method for film coated passivation of individual grooves or channels in an array of closely spaced grooves or channels of a workpiece, for example, ink channels in a printhead employed in an ink jet printer device; includes the steps of placing the workpiece on a rotation plate having a rotational center, securing the workpiece to the rotation plate with the grooves directed radially outward from the rotational center of the rotation plate, placing resin upon the workpiece in the vicinity of the grooves, and spinning the rotation plate to cause the resin to migrate along the surfaces of the grooves and thereby coating them.

  • Patent number: 5481343
Abstract: An electrophotographic printing system. Negatively charged toner is supplied to the surface of a first roller where the toner electrostatically adheres, either in a uniform layer or a variable layer, to the surface of the first roller. The negatively charged toner electrostatically adhered to the surface of the first roller is then transferred to the photoconductive surface and, from a photoconductive surface, to a sheet of paper positioned in proximity to the photoconductive surface. The apparatus may also include a second roller held at a positive charge relative to the first roller for electrostatically transferring toner from the second roller to the first roller. Alternately, the positive charge on the second roller relative to the first roller may be produced by placing a negative charge on the first roller or by placing a negative charge on the second roller and a more negative charge on the second roller.

  • Patent number: 5475563
Abstract: Operating heat generated by a PCMCIA card inserted into the base housing portion of a computer, representatively a notebook computer, is dissipated by a heat sink system disposed within the base housing. In response to insertion of the card into its associated support structure within the base housing, a metal heat sink plate member is resiliently pressed into firm engagement with a side of the inserted card by a spring member interconnected between the plate member and the card support structure. Card operating heat is efficiently transferred to the metal plate member by conduction. To dissipate the heat received by the plate member, a heat removing fluid is flowed against the plate member and caused to receive heat therefrom. Heat received by the fluid is then transferred to ambient air external to the computer to substantially lower the operating temperature of the inserted PCMCIA card.

  • Patent number: 5469335
Abstract: A power distribution system and a method for supplying power to a first circuit board having a first contact member conductively mounted thereto and a first aperture through the first contact member substantially coaxially aligned with a first opening through the first circuit board is provided by the present invention. The system comprises an elongated conductive rod that is removably positioned through the first aperture and the first opening and that extends normally from the first circuit board. The rod is electrically connectable to the first circuit board by a first contact member and has a length sufficient to (a) enter a second aperture of a second contact member conductively mounted on a second circuit board parallel to and adjacent one side of the first circuit board and (b) contact a power connector adjacent an opposite side of the first circuit board to thereby allow the rod to distribute electrical current to multiple circuit boards.

  • Patent number: 5461963
Abstract: Belted ammunition of either the "ball" or the shorter "SLAP" type is supplied through a flexible feed chute to a 7.62 mm mini machine gun using a specially configured feed adapter interconnected between the outlet end of the feed chute and the inlet of the gun feeder mechanism. The feed adapter, through which the ammunition passes into the gun feed mechanism, is provided with at least one internal roller around which the ammunition belt operatively passes. The roller has a side surface contour with a sloped shoulder portion which complementarily engages the sloping shoulders of the individual ammunition rounds passing around the roller. This complementary shoulder engagement longitudinally indexes the rounds within the adapter and limits undesirable longitudinal shifting of the rounds therein.

  • Patent number: 5460290
Abstract: The storage tank portion of a water heater has an outwardly projecting threaded pipe coupling fitting and is disposed within a jacket structure that forms an enclosed insulation space around the storage tank, the outer end of the pipe coupling fitting being spaced inwardly apart from a pipe connection opening in the jacket structure. A generally tubular foam stop member having a convexly curved side portion is positioned within the insulation space before the space is filled by an injection process with a liquid foam insulation material. The foam stop member receives the pipe coupling, is axially pressed between the storage tank and the jacket structure, and forms a seal around the pipe coupling fitting and around the jacket structure pipe connection opening.

  • Patent number: 5460441
Abstract: A rack mounted computer system has a vertically elongated cabinet structure in which a specially designed server unit is mounted. The server unit includes a slide-out outer drawer having a power supply box mounted in a lower interior portion thereof. An inner tray is slidably mounted in an upper interior portion of the outer drawer, over the power supply box, and has a system planar board and associated riser cards mounted on its top side. When the outer drawer is pulled out service access is provided to the circuit board apparatus on the inner tray. Access is provided to the power supply box by simply sliding the inner tray rearwardly relative to the opened outer drawer to expose the power supply box. Cooling fans are carried on the inner tray and within the outer drawer to cool the various computer components mounted within the server unit by flowing cooling air generally horizontally therethrough.

  • Patent number: 5461403
Abstract: An ink jet printhead and an associated method for operatively driving the ink jet printhead to cause the ejection of a volume modulatable droplet from an ink-carrying channel thereof partially defined by a piezoelectric sidewall actuator. The voltage applied across the sidewall actuator is raised from a rest voltage to a first voltage to deflect the sidewall actuator from a rest position to a first position and maintained at the first voltage for a first period of time. The voltage applied across the sidewall actuator is then dropped to a second voltage, lower than the rest voltage, to deflect the sidewall actuator from the first position, past the rest position, to a second position and maintained at the second voltage for a second period of time. The voltage applied across the sidewall actuator is then returned to the rest voltage to deflect the sidewall actuator back to the rest position.

  • Patent number: 5444467
Abstract: A differential drive system is used to actuate an ink jet printhead having a spaced, parallel series of internal ink receiving channels opening outwardly through ink discharge orifices formed in the printhead body. The channels are laterally bounded by a spaced series of piezoelectrically deflectable internal sidewall actuator sections of the printhead body interdigitated with the channels. The printhead body is specially configured to facilitate wiring access to spaced apart first and second electrical connection portions on each of the actuators. Electrical leads from a first controller are connected to the first actuator portions and are ganged in groups that are selectively connected to a driving voltage source, or to ground, by the first controller. A second controller has a first set of electrical leads similarly ganged in groups and connected to a first set of the second actuator portions, and a second set of unganged electrical leads individually connected to the rest of the second actuator portions.
