  • Patent number: 6185195
Abstract: In a half-duplex communication system in which additional delays in the communication channel may cause a message collision between a message and a response, a collision detector is utilized to prevent and detect message collisions. The collision detector determines if a response may be transmitted from the communication device while it is receiving the current message. If no response is expected, the collision detector is placed into a train mode. If a response is possible, the collision detector is placed into the monitor mode. In the monitor mode, the collision detector monitors the communication channel and determines if a message collision has occurred during transmission of the message. A detection of a message collision causes retransmission of the message or possibly a new message at a later time after it has been determined that the communication channel is clear.

  • Patent number: 6151502
Abstract: A method and apparatus for providing soft handoff in a mobile communication system. In current systems is that the members of active set are determined in accordance with comparisons of measured pilot energy with fixed thresholds. However, the value of providing a redundant communication link to a mobile station depends strongly on the energy of other signals being provided to the mobile station. In the present invention, the signal strengths of other base stations in communication with a mobile station are considered when determining whether adding a base to that set of base stations in communication with the remote station is of sufficient value to justify the impact on system capacity.

  • Patent number: 6137840
Abstract: A method and apparatus for controlling transmission power in a mobile communication system is disclosed. The method disclosed provides for a closed-loop power control method for variable rate transmissions. The power of transmissions is varied in accordance with the rate of the frames of data being transmitted. The transmission power between the rates can be a fixed or variable difference.

  • Patent number: 6122384
Abstract: A system and method for noise suppression in a speech processing system is presented. A gain estimator determines the gain, and thus the level of noise suppression, for each frame of the input signal. If no speech is present in the frame, then the gain is set at a predetermined minimum. If speech is present in the frame, then a gain factor is determined for each channel of a predefined set of frequency channels. For each channel, the gain factor is a function of the SNR of speech in the channel. The channel SNRs are generated by a SNR estimator based on channel energy estimates provided by an energy estimator and channel noise energy estimates provided by a noise energy estimator. The noise energy estimator updates its estimates during frames in which no speech is present, as determined by a speech detector.

  • Patent number: 6115142
Abstract: The present invention provides an apparatus and method for supporting analog fax calls between two wireless subscriber stations in a tandem configuration. The existence of a tandem configuration is detected, and a more efficient communication protocol is established between two base stations upon detection of the tandem configuration. A message generator in a first base station generates an identification message. If the identification message is received by a second base station, the second base station will be informed that the tandem configuration exists. A message generator in a second base station may then generate a return message, which when received by the first base station, will notify the first base station of the existence of the tandem configuration. To support the tandem configuration, full duplex communication may be established between the two base stations.

  • Patent number: 6085349
Abstract: The method for selecting CRC polynomials (or CRC generators) for linear coded systems. In the exemplary embodiment, a communication system utilizes a concatenated code comprising a CRC code and a convolutional code. The CRC generators are selected based on the distance spectrums which have been computed for all possible CRC generators of a given length L. The distance spectrum comprises a listing of the number of paths (or code words) at various weights (or Hamming distance). These paths represent error information sequences I(x) which have diverged from an all-zero transmitted sequence (or the zero state) and have merged back into the zero state. The paths are checked by the CRC generators. If the CRC check passes, indicating that the error information sequence is undetected by the CRC check, the weight of this path is calculated and the distance spectrum for this CRC generator is updated. Otherwise, if the CRC does not check, the path is ignored. The CRC generator with the maximum minimum distance d.sub.

  • Patent number: 5933462
Abstract: A soft decision output decoder and decoding method. The decoder decodes a sequence of signals output by an encoder and transmitted over a channel. The soft decision output decoder includes a first "generalized" Viterbi decoder for decoding the sequence of signals received over the channel during a forward iteration through a trellis representing the encoder output having a block length T. The first "generalized" Viterbi decoder begins at an initial state t.sub.0 and provides a plurality of forward iteration state metrics .alpha. for each state at each time interval over a window of length 2L, where L is on the order of a few constraint lengths and 2L is less than a block length T. A second "generalized" Viterbi decoder decodes the sequence of signals received over the channel during a backward iteration through the trellis. The second decoder starts at a second time t2L and provides a plurality of backward iteration state metrics .beta. for each state at each time interval.
