  • Patent number: 4421451
Abstract: A workpiece gripping mechanism for an industrial robot is described. A support member having a first jaw member mounted on it for pivotal movement about a first axis is provided. The support assembly and the first jaw assembly define a first rotary fluid-actuated motor operable to pivotally displace a jaw member in the first jaw assembly relative to the support member about the first axis. A second jaw assembly is also mounted on the support member for pivotal movement about the first axis. The support member and the second jaw assembly define a second rotary fluid-actuated motor operable to pivotally displace a jaw member in the second jaw assembly relative to the support member about the first axis whereby the first and second fluid-actuated motors may be operated independently to pivotally displace the jaw members relative to each other for gripping and releasing a workpiece and to displace the jaw members relative to the support member.

  • Patent number: 4411390
Abstract: An apparatus for producing particulate material from compact masses of materials such as that used for insulation and then pneumatically dispensing the material in a uniform flow and with a preselected and consistent density. The apparatus includes a hopper for receiving the compact masses, an outlet positioned in the bottom of the hopper and a shredding zone located within the upper portion of the hopper for shredding large compact masses into smaller masses or nodules. An auger is positioned below the shredding zone and above the outlet for moving the material along the hopper. Below the auger is a tearing and separating zone that receives the material from the outlet and operates to tear and separate any of the nodules of the material into particulate material. The particulate material is then received and dispensed by a pneumatic transport means. The transport means includes a rotating air lock having an inlet at one end and an end plate at the other or exhaust end of the air lock.

  • Patent number: 4402988
Abstract: A plantain impregnated with fruit juice, particularly orange juice, having a unique taste and texture. Plantains are selected with ripeness such that the sugar content is derived from at least 70% conversion of the starch to sugar, peeling the plantains and then apply a high vacuum to the plantains. The plantains are then immersed in a solution of fruit juice. When the vacuum is released, the plantains are held immersed in the fruit juice for a sufficient dwell time. The impregnated fruit is then removed and it is frozen. The fruit prior to impregnation is desirably preserved from fungus attack by ripening the plantains in a low humidity of about a maximum of 40% relative humidity and/or contacting the plantains with a fungicide, such as that containing chlorine.

  • Patent number: 4400291
Abstract: An ethylene gas generating liquid composition for catalytic conversion to ethylene. Ethanol is the primary ingredient of the liquid composition but there is also present 1.0% to 15% methanol, 0.1% to 10% of an ester such as amyl acetate and 0.1% to 15% of an aliphatic alcohol such as isopropanol. This liquid composition has been found to maintain a high conversion efficiency for the catalyst and minimizes the production of by-products.

  • Patent number: 4398605
Abstract: A fire fighting composition and method for spraying a low volume liquid stream without foam onto a fire that conserves the volume of fluid used and yet more quickly snuffs out the fire. The fire fighting composition is formed from a concentrate comprising one or more nonionic surfactants having a combined cloud point of 68.degree. F.-212.degree. F. and sufficient water to form a concentrate solution of not greater than 30% by weight of the surfactant. The ultimate fire fighting composition is formed from the concentrate and passed through a conventional pump. A fire fighting solution is formed having not greater than 0.2% by volume of the surfactant that does not cause undesirable foaming or cavitation of the pump due to the low concentration of the surfactant. The fire fighting solution in this form is sprayed onto fires to form an effective means for combatting fires while achieving high versatility for conventional fire fighting pumping apparatus.
