  • Patent number: 8294544
Abstract: An M-phase coupled inductor including a magnetic core and M windings, where M is an integer greater than one. The magnetic core is formed of a core material, and the magnetic core includes a first outer leg forming a first gap. The first gap includes a first gap material having lower magnetic permeability than the core material. Each winding is wound at least partially around at least a portion of the magnetic core, and each winding has a respective leakage inductance. The first gap causes the leakage inductances to be greater than if the first outer leg did not form the first gap. The coupled inductor may be used in a power supply, and the power supply may be used in a computing apparatus.

  • Patent number: 8284035
Abstract: Systems and methods convey information from a controller to at least one slave unit using a single wire referenced to an alternating current (AC) power supply. A control signal has a high voltage and a low voltage. The high voltage is greater than a voltage midpoint of the AC power supply and the low voltage is less than the voltage midpoint. The control signal is conveyed through the single wire to each of the at least one slave unit. At each slave unit, a comparison voltage, representative of the voltage midpoint, is generated by dividing substantially midway the potentials between the power lines of the AC power supply and the control signal is compared to the comparison voltage to determine low and high states of the control signal; the low and high states represent the information.

  • Patent number: 8280682
Abstract: A device for monitoring movement of shipped goods and a related improvement include a detector for generating a signal in response to movement of the device during shipping when associated with the goods. A processor processes the signal to generate one or more movement events, and time-tags the movement events with time of occurrence information from a clock. A GPS chip locates the device, data from the GPS chip providing location information of where each of the movement events occurred. A first communications port communicates each movement event, tagged with the time of occurrence information and location information, to a receiver remote from the device.

  • Patent number: 8272757
Abstract: A solid-state LED lighting lamp (SSL-LED lamp), based on AC or DC-emitters, which runs under a high AC or DC voltage, with high light generation capability, high reliability and long lifespan, is disclosed. A plurality of AC or DC-emitter chips are integrated on a thermally conductive submount and the electrically conductive element pathways on the submount provide electrical interconnections between the mounted chips and also between the individual LEDs on each chip. The conducting elements also provide redundant current paths at the AC or DC-emitter chip level and individual LED level. Depending on the detail design, the LED SSL-lamp may be directly powered by an AC voltage (i.e. 110/120V or 220/240V power grid) or a high DC voltage. With this design, the LED SSL-lamp can provide sufficient illumination to replace the incandescent or florescent light bulbs for general lighting purpose. The distributed emitter array design ensures the heat dissipation.

  • Patent number: 8274725
Abstract: A shutter includes micro-optics having first and second concentrator arrays. A transducer laterally displaces one of the first and second concentrator arrays between transmissive and shuttered modes. In the transmissive mode, the arrays of concentrators are optically aligned to permit electromagnetic energy passing through the first array of concentrators to pass through the second array of concentrators. In the shuttered mode, the electromagnetic radiation is blocked from passing through the second array of concentrators. The concentrators may be compound parabolic concentrators, or lenslets positioned on opposing plates with pinholes printed therethrough. The shutter may increase f-number of radiation passing therethrough, and may be used in a limited f-cone radiation source with shuttering abilities, for example reducing f-cone of radiation output from the radiation source.
