    Abstract: A medical training simulator includes contact-less sensors and corresponding detection objects, configured to enable sensor data collected during a training exercise to be used to evaluate the performance of the training exercise. The simulator includes a simulated anatomical structure, at least one contact-less sensor, and at least one detection object. During a training exercise, a spatial relationship between the contact-less sensor and the detection object produces data for evaluating performance of the training exercise. Either the contact-less sensor or the detection object is embedded in the simulated physiological structure, while the other is included in either a support for the simulated physiological structure, or as part of a tool used during the training exercise. Many types of contact-less sensors can be employed, including capacitance sensors, impedance sensors, inductive sensors, and magnetic sensors.

    Abstract: Photometric and morphometric features derived from multi-mode imagery of cells in flow are used as a cell analyzer to determine if a marker corresponding to a cancer cell or precancerous cell is present in the population of cells imaged. An imaging system simultaneously acquires a plurality of images for each cell passing through the field of view of the imaging system. Acquiring a plurality of different images (i.e., bright field, dark field, and fluorescent images) facilitates the determination of different morphological and morphometric parameters. Simultaneously acquiring the plurality of images enables relatively large populations of cells to be rapidly imaged, so that relatively small numbers of cancer cells in a large population of cells can be detected. Initially, known cancer cells are imaged to enable a marker to be identified. Then, a sample that may include cancer cells is imaged to determine if the marker is present.

    Abstract: Interferometric modulators include a movable mirror that is actuated by voltage applied to a plurality of electrodes relative to at least one other electrode, to define a cavity relative to a partially reflective mirror formed by a top plate. The depth of the cavity determines a bandwidth of light that is modulated by internal reflections within the cavity and which interferes with light that is reflected from a partially reflective mirror on the top plate, producing a desired reflected color of light for the modulator. Variations in manufacturing and material characteristics can cause the movable mirror to tilt relative to the partially reflective mirror, which degrades the modulation accuracy. To compensate, different voltages can be applied to the plurality of electrodes. The voltage can be determined at time of manufacture and stored in non-volatile memory, for use when the modulator is actuated during use.
