Patent number: 6829369Abstract: The processing of mail pieces relies in part on automated address interpretation of captured address field images to generate sortation signals that control automated mail sorting machinery at outgoing and incoming mail centers. In alternative implementations, a coding depth file (“CDF”) controls (i) the depth to which a captured address field image is resolved and (ii) a time delay in performing address interpretation. In one aspect, a CDF includes a first set of data associating a depth value with each of a selected plurality of incoming mail centers to which an outgoing mail center sends mail pieces. The depth value controls the depth to which a stored address field image is resolved and corresponds to a level of refinement to which automated sorting machinery at the associated incoming mail center sorts mail pieces.Type: GrantFiled: May 18, 2001Date of Patent: December 7, 2004Assignee: Lockheed Martin CorporationInventors: Jeffrey Scott Poulin, Robert Strebel, Joseph P. Patent number: 6816602Abstract: The invention is characterized in certain aspects by data processing architectures and methods of processing a mail piece having a destination address field through outgoing and incoming mail centers. An illustrative method includes receiving a mail piece at an outgoing mail center for transport to an incoming mail center and subsequent sorting and transport from the incoming mail center to an an addressee. The mail piece includes a destination address field that is divided into a first address portion and a second address portion. The first address portion is interpreted at the outgoing mail center and used to sort the mail piece for transport to the incoming mail center. The second address portion is eventually resolved and used by the incoming mail center to sort the mail piece for subsequent delivery to an addressee.Type: GrantFiled: March 1, 2001Date of Patent: November 9, 2004Assignee: Lockheed Martin CorporationInventors: David J. Patent number: 6814210Abstract: A material deflector plate system adapted for mounting below the forwardly declining surface of a material-guiding discharge chute includes a base frame for mounting rearwardly of the discharge edge of the declining surface and a deflector-plate support structure reciprocably depending from the base frame for reciprocation between rearwardmost and forwardmost positions. Hingedly depending from the support structure are alternatively collapsible and deployable first and second deflector plate sets. The system can alternatively assume storage and operative attitudes. A storage attitude is one in which the deflector plate sets are collapsed and the support structure is disposed sufficiently rearwardly with respect to the base frame that at least a majority of the length of the collapsed deflector plate sets is disposed rearwardly of the chute discharge edge.Type: GrantFiled: April 16, 2003Date of Patent: November 9, 2004Assignee: Lockheed Martin CorporationInventor: Louis J. Patent number: 6719119Abstract: A roller conveyor extension includes a base frame having elongated parallel first and second tracks, each of the tracks having rearward and forward ends. First and second carriages reciprocate rearwardly and forwardly between the rearward and forward ends of, respectively, the first and second tracks. A roller support structure having back and front ends, and extending along an axis, supports a plurality of rollers, each of which rollers is adapted for rotational motion about a roller axis extending along an axis perpendicular to the roller support structure axis. The roller support structure is pivotably attached to each of the first and second carriages such that the roller support structure is capable of both rotational motion about a pivot axis and rearward and forward reciprocating motion with respect to the base frame.Type: GrantFiled: March 27, 2003Date of Patent: April 13, 2004Assignee: Lockheed Martin CorporationInventors: Louis J. Patent number: 6698580Abstract: An adjustable roller conveyor module includes a first support structure comprising first and second laterally spaced, longitudinally extending frame members. A first roller set supported by the first support structure includes rollers rotatable about lateral axes equi-spaced in accordance with a predetermined roller-axis spacing. A second support structure is carried between the first and second frame members of the first support structure for longitudinal reciprocation between fully retracted and extended positions. The second support structure supports a second roller set including rollers rotatable about lateral axes coplanar with the axes of the first roller set and equi-spaced in accordance with the predetermined roller-axis spacing. Selected rollers of the first roller set are removable to accommodate retraction of the second support structure.Type: GrantFiled: June 17, 2002Date of Patent: March 2, 2004Assignee: Lockheed Martin CorporationInventor: Glenn T. Patent number: 6648230Abstract: A method and apparatus for evaluating a confidence level of a decoded barcode value is disclosed. A digit score is assigned to a digit within a barcode. When decoding the barcode, if a deduction is required to decode the digit, then the digit score for the digit is reduced accordingly. After all the digits within the barcode have been decoded, a total score of a decoded barcode value can be determined by adding all the digit scores for all the digits within the barcode. The total score of the decoded barcode value is reduced if a checksum is used to ascertain the value of any digit within the barcode. The decoded barcode value can be accepted only if the total score exceeds a predetermined value.Type: GrantFiled: May 22, 2002Date of Patent: November 18, 2003Assignee: Lockheed Martin CorporationInventors: Eduardo Kellerman, Richard C. Variable-length message formats and methods of assembling and communicating variable-length messages
Patent number: 6483446Abstract: A system for assembling and communicating variable-length data messages over a computer network is adapted to access a master set of predefined data structures and select for inclusion within an assembled message those predefined data structures within the master set meeting a predetermined set of inclusion criteria. A message is assembled to include a set of selected predefined structures and an index including a set of index references. Each index reference corresponds to a data structure within the message and is indicative of the content of the data structure to which it corresponds. An offset reference is associated with each index reference of a selected set of index references included in the index. An offset reference is indicative of the location within the assembled message of a predefined data structure corresponding to the index reference with which the offset references is associated.Type: GrantFiled: November 2, 2001Date of Patent: November 19, 2002Assignee: Lockheed Martin CorporationInventors: Douglas J. Patent number: 5867238Abstract: A polymer-dispersed liquid crystal device comprises a multiplicity of droplets of a birefringent, functionally nematic liquid crystal material dispersed in a matrix comprising the reaction product of ultraviolet radiation polymerizable materials. The device specularly transmits incident light as a function of the magnitude of an electric field applied across the device. The difference between a first applied voltage corresponding to a first percentage of the total incident light transmitted by the device as specular light and a second applied voltage corresponding to a second percentage of the total incident light transmitted by the device as specular light is greater than or equal to 15 volts. As a result, a polymer-dispersed liquid crystal device according to the invention displays a variable grey scale which has a uniform optical transmission. A method for preparing a PDLC device in general is also disclosed.Type: GrantFiled: August 19, 1996Date of Patent: February 2, 1999Assignee: Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing CompanyInventors: Stephen A. Patent number: 5713519Abstract: A system and method for spraying single or multiple component fluid systems onto a surface. The spray applicator utilizes a venturi effect to independently draw fluids from separate containers, atomize the fluids and spray the fluids in a desired pattern onto a surface. The atomized streams generally overlap so that the fluids mix prior to contacting the target surface. In one embodiment, the fluids are retained in flexible containers separately connected to a spray applicator by flexible tubes. The flexible containers include a fitting for receiving a fluid draw tube and a releasable closure for expelling excess pressure within the container.Type: GrantFiled: July 21, 1995Date of Patent: February 3, 1998Assignee: Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing CompanyInventors: W.
