  • Patent number: 4501109
Abstract: A vertical form, fill and seal packaging machine in which a predetermined length of web or film is pulled downwardly past a tube forming collar by endless belts located downstream of the collar. A power-rotated feed roll is located upstream of the collar and pulls film from a supply roll for delivery to the collar, the feed roll being driven at a higher surface speed than the pull down belts. To match the supply of the feed roll with the demand of the belts, means sense the tension in the film at a location between the feed roll and the forming collar and cause the feed roll to slip relative to the film as an inverse function of that tension.

  • Patent number: 4502042
Abstract: A multi-position proximity switch having a plurality of binary outputs, each output indicating whether the distance between an object and a field transducer exceeds a corresponding one of a plurality of predefined distances. The sensitivity of a proximity detector having a single binary output is stepped through a plurality of adjustable levels by a digital counter having decoded outputs and the binary output of the proximity switch is sampled after the decoded counter outputs change state so that a plurality of binary outputs, each associated with a detector sensitivity level and a corresponding distance, are provided. The failure of the greatest distance to be detected or the detection of the smallest distance activates an alarm indicating that the object is outside a permissible range of distances.

  • Patent number: 4498701
Abstract: A retractable closure for an aperture, particularly suited as a sliding roof apparatus for motor vehicles, is disclosed. A retractable panel is mounted for generally horizontal translation without jogs between a first, closed position substantially flush with the upper surface of the structure and covering said aperture and a second, open position over a stationary panel in a recessed area adjacent said aperture. A liftable panel is provided above the stationary panel and moves between a first, lowered position 10 substantially flush with the upper surface of the structure and covering the recessed area and a second, raised position in which it creates a vertical space between its lower surface and the stationary panel into which vertical space the retractable panel translates in moving into its second, open position. Actuators for the retractable and liftable panels may be either separate or combined.

  • Patent number: 4498607
Abstract: An ice cube dispenser with a cylindrical bin having a bottom arcuate ramp leading to a side opening through which ice cubes are pushed by rotating agitator blades. The cube dispensing rate is adjusted by positioning a deflector plate from the ramp to a selected vertical position in the opening, thus effectively changing the opening size. The dispensed cubes are guided by plates defining a flexing wall chute. A glass trigger, when pivoted by a glass, opens a door over said opening and trips a switch that actuates the agitator blades.

  • Patent number: 4498162
Abstract: A disc player apparatus having mechanism for guiding and centering disc records of different size on a disc record drive having a vertical spindle. A horizontal plate for receiving a disc record inserted and movable along a horizontal path to a position centered on the spindle has spaced levers pivotally movable laterally outwardly from a first position straddling the center line of the path and resiliently urged toward each other; the levers have a first position spaced sufficiently to engage an inserted disc record of either a small size or a large size and be moved outwardly thereby against the resilient element to guide a record of either size to centered position. A pair of generally L-shaped stop members are mounted on the plate straddling the center line in the path of an inserted small size record to locate such a record in its centered position.

  • Patent number: 4495863
Abstract: In a rotary printing machine, an arrangement for mounting an applicator roller and a preceding roller in a fluid feed stream journals the applicator roller and the preceding roller to the printing machine frame with substantial bearing play, and spring loads the applicator roller against the bearing surface away from the plate cylinder. On passing through the cylinder gap the applicator rollers of inking, damping or varnishing units in sheet-fed offset presses are jolted both at the start and end of the gap. The resulting different flattening of the soft applicator rollers causes roller marks, which should be avoided. For this purpose the applicator roller and the preceding roller are braced against each other by springs, so that their bearing play is eliminated and the distance between shafts is constant. This condition is also maintained on passage through the gap. Conveyance of liquid between applicator rollers and the preceding rollers is thus constant.

  • Patent number: 4496940
Abstract: A sensing and indicator system for monitoring multiple electric heating elements connected in three-phase balanced Y circuits in heat reactivatable adsorbent gas fractionators. The system senses a failure induced imbalance, pinpoints the location of the group with the failure and causes a failure indicating alarm to function. The system operates by a sensing circuit including a discharge bulb sensing the failure induced imbalance and causing a conduction of current through the system resulting in the activation of an alarm and the illumination of the gas discharge bulb indicating which of multiple sets of heating elements has failed.

  • Patent number: 4497049
Abstract: A detector system for the operative face of a disc carrying data on one face only is applicable to a laser or optical reading means which is located in turntable apparatus whereby the user is warned of the fact that the disc is placed upside-down and that, therefore, the data which it carries cannot be reproduced. A control signal is generated by the detector system, producing a warning or tripping an operation such as the rejection of the disc or the interruption of the insertion movement.

  • Patent number: 4495968
Abstract: A pneumatic control system for machinery and the like which have a plurality of intermittently operated pneumatic use points or work stations. The system includes a common pneumatic source of sufficient capacity to maintain a predetermined minimum pressure level during the operating sequence of the system, a line connecting each use point to the common source, and a non-pressure responsive, selectively adjustable, throttling valve interposed in each connecting line for establishing a desired pressure at the use point relative to the pressure of the common source. The system is controlled such that the use points draw upon the common source in a predetermined sequence and rate such that the total capacity demand on the common source remains substantially constant, and thus the use point pressures remain constant without the need for relatively expensive pressure regulator valves in the respective use point connecting lines.

  • Patent number: 4494318
Abstract: In accordance with the invention an apparatus and method are provided for curing resin-coated particles on a heated rotating surface. A single layer coating of uncured resin-coated particles is fed to the heated rotating surface. As the surface continues to rotate the uncured resin-coated particles become tacky and adhere to the rotating surface. The tack adhesion prevents the pull of gravity from separating the particles from the surface as rotation continues. Proper curing of the particles occurs on the heated rotating surface before one complete revolution is made by the surface. Cured particles are removed by a stationary scraper blade edge which rides the rotating surface and wedges between the adhering particles and the surface as the surface rotates past the edge.
