Abstract: A column of hot, particulate char from a shaft furnace is moistened with quench water as it moves downwardly into a vessel which it fills and forms a pile. The material in the pile is shifted from a central core at the base of the column to a zone which surrounds the sides and bottom of the column by material flowing from the lower portion of the column; and steam is exhausted from the upper portion of the vessel.
Abstract: A process for the preparation of a polymer compound containing a plurality of structural units of the formula ##STR1## and having the formula ##STR2## WHEREIN ONE OF Q and Q' are independently the group --NH--CO--OR.sup.IV or hydrogen and the other --NH--CO--COOR.sup.V or hydrogen, whereinR.sup.iv and R.sup.V are aliphatic or carbocylcic hydrocarbon groups, an urethane or an isocyanate group;R''' is an aromatic radicalA is I) an aromatic radical R' or II) R'''and wherein the radicals being arranged between the imidazolidine rings in the chain always have an alternative meaning R' and R''' and the various radicals R' and R''' in one chain have per se the same or a different meaning, wherein the radical A being bound to the thermal radical Q is always R',z is an integer from 3 to 70,And wherein at least one oxamidic acid ester with the grouping --NH--CO--CO--OR.sup.V, wherein R.sup.V is as defined, is reacted with an isocyanate or an isocyanate forming compound at temperatures of -20.degree. to +280.degree.
Abstract: A brush element containing a plurality of bristles having medial bends formed into a plurality of tufts, each tuft being surrounded by a mechanical restraining means, a back for said brush comprising a body of fiberglass filled and reinforced substantially inflexible high impact thermoset polyester resin, each medial bend of said bristles being embedded in said resin such that its upper end is closer to the top surface of said back than to the bottom surface thereof and the restraining means being closer to the bottom surface of said back than to the top surface thereof. The polyester resin has a notched izod impact strength greater than 2 foot-pounds per inch and a Shore D hardness greater than 50.
Abstract: Solid municipal waste refuse is pre-treated by partial burning in a moving grate hot carbonizer furnace and then further burned on a reciprocating step-grate stoker in the same furnace chamber. Limited amounts of air are fed to the waste through the grates to avoid the formation of hot spots in the burning material, thereby preventing the formation of clinkers and restricting the burning of volatile matter in the refuse. Hot low-Btu gas exhausted from the furnace chamber is burned in a boiler.
Abstract: An insulating core including a helical groove for use in a coil form, U-shaped grooves for use in an insulator in compression and diametrical holes for use in an insulator in tension. The wire used in the system is part of an antenna system.
Abstract: The invention provides an apparatus for producing video frequency color value signals which correspond to a desired arrangement of vertical or horizontal color bars on a television screen. In the case of vertical color bars the apparatus derives during each line period an identical series of pulses having a multiple of the line frequency. Each series of pulses is applied to a binary counter which provides as output a sequence of sets of binary signals. This sequence of sets of binary signals is translated by a pre-programmed store into a further sequence of sets of binary signals, these latter sets of signals being applied to a digital-to-analogue converter adapted to derive therefrom corresponding sets of color value signals. Each set of color value signals defines a differently colored line segment.
Abstract: A means for connecting a vacuum pump to a chamber to be evacuated comprises an outer wall of low gas permeability and a gas sorptive means substantially coextensive with the inner surface of said outer wall.
Abstract: An insertable tooth for use in a slasher for paper pulp manufacture is disclosed to have a flat elongated plate of steel of even thickness having a rounded base and substantially parallel leading and following edges with a V-shaped groove extending along a lower major portion of the leading and following edges. The tooth also has a planar top angularly extending from a lower point on the following edge toward a higher point near the leading edge. A blade of a material having a hardness of at least 9 MOHS is inserted in a notch at the high point of the leading edge. The blade is in the form of a cubic trapezoid, the base of which is arranged essentially flush with the leading edge. The width of the base of the blade is greater than the thickness of the plate of steel forming the tooth. The sides of the blade are relieved from the base while the upper surface of the blade is arranged nearly coplanarly with or slightly above the planar top of the tooth.
Abstract: An articulated ancillary support for a conveyor is attached onto the forward side of a mine roof chock by extensible means which, when retracted towards the chock, shifts the ancillary support from a normal condition in which it occupies an area of relatively wide lateral extent to another condition in which it overlies an area of relatively narrow lateral extent, freeing a large portion of the space under the chocks to clear the way for a retreating continuous miner.

Abstract: A striking device for use by a trainee in karate, boxing, etc., to simulate an opponent. Target elements are suspended by a cord from a fixed overhead position and pivoted rod-mounted response elements are balanced between the target elements. When the trainee strikes the target elements, the response elements move in an unpredictable manner to strike back at the trainee.
Abstract: A drill steel holder is mounted on the drill box of a mine roof drilling and bolting machine. An opposed pair of levers are supported intermediate outboard and inboard ends thereof by vertical pivots. A hydraulic ram connected between the outboard ends of the lever swings their inboard ends thereof towards and away from one another. Rollers on chassis pivoted onto the inboard ends embrace a drill steel mounted in a chuck in the drill box, and stops are provided for limiting the pivotal movement of one of the levers.
Abstract: A turntable for supporting a cake is supported on an axis which can be tipped so as to facilitate the application of decoration to the side of a cake.
Abstract: Aircraft flaps provide rearwardly convergent channels which terminate at or near the trailing edges of the flaps. The forward intakes of the channels are closed when the flaps are elevated and open when the flaps are depressed. A control is programmed to operate the flaps so as to maintain minimum drag until sufficient ground speed is attained for take-off, and to limit the velocity of air discharged from the channels to sub-sonic speeds.
