  • Patent number: 5646910
Abstract: A pneumatic gun or air gun having a fast-acting sliding valve reciprocable between two axial positions to close or open intake and exhaust ports in a charge chamber in a housing. The sliding valve comprises a piston internal to the housing and may include a piston in a cylinder within and extending beyond the housing. The sliding valve has a sealing flange which forms a lip seal with an annular mating surface of the housing to close an exhaust port. Air accelerating from the gun may be radial from an equatorial exhaust port or may be axial from an end of the charge chamber. The charge chamber is provided with an intake port in selective communication with a source of pressurized gas, thereby to facilitate rapid charging rates. The intake port is closed when the exhaust port is opened by the sliding action of the valve member, and is opened when the lip seal is formed to close the exhaust port.

  • Patent number: 5632741
Abstract: In order to permanently remove hair growing in subcutaneous (below the skin's surface) tissue and to do so permanently, the hair and its root structure is epilated (vaporized) in an ablation cavity of essentially the same size and shape as the volume occupied by the root structure which includes follicle, the follicle bulb and the dermal papilla. Optical energy is used which is of a wavelength and fluence sufficient to cause epilation in the cavity without relying upon selective photothermolysis thereby limiting damage to tissue outside of the hair root structure. To find and restrict the optical energy to the epilation cavity, an optical system, which may be constituted of a single lens, having a numerical aperture of F/5-5.8 is used. The beam is generated by a laser which may be operated in a pulse mode and contained in a hand piece having the optical system at the end thereof.

  • Patent number: 5611281
Abstract: A system for axially reciprocating a tacky roller (contact cleaning roller, or CCR) across a substrate being cleaned by the roller, to spread particles which are non-uniformly distributed on the substrate surface over a broader area of the tacky roller collecting surface, thereby decreasing the rate of decay of collecting efficiency, improving the average cleanliness of the treated substrate, and extending the operating lifetime of the tacky roller between renewals. The roller may or may not be in contact with the substrate surface during reciprocation of the roller. The system includes a second CCR to alternate with the first CCR, such that at least one roller is cleaning the substrate while another roller is being renewed. The system can be configured to provide full-width CCRs which overlap both edges of a surface at all times during reciprocation.

  • Patent number: 5568975
Abstract: A steady bearing on a mixer shaft in a vessel supported from the walls of the vessel by a plurality of pairs of parallel struts which are pivotably mounted at their ends in fixed parallel clevises, the inner clevises being included in a bearing support subassembly and the outer clevises being attached to the vessel wall. The struts and clevises define a plurality of supportive parallelogram structures. The steady bearing is free to slide axially along the mixer shaft. As the vessel expands or contracts in response to changes in internal pressure or temperature as required by process conditions, the shape of the parallelogram structures is free to change to lengthen or shorten the parallelogram diagonals, and in response the steady bearing moves to a new position along the shaft. Radial support of the bearing is maintained at all axial positions assumed by the bearing.

  • Patent number: 5538120
Abstract: The retainer is a circular cam follower plate having therethrough three arcuate slots arranged coaxially of the axis of the plate. Each of the slots has a roller follower mounted in one end thereof for rotation about an axis extending transversely of the associated slot. The axes of the roller followers lie in a common plane disposed approximately coplanar with one side of the plate so that part of each roller is positioned within its associated slot, and the remainder projects beyond said one side of the plate. This permits the plate to be substituted for corresponding original equipment plates used in the clutches of continuous variable transmission of the type employed in snowmobiles, and the like, without requiring replacement of the associated cam which drives the follower plate.

  • Patent number: 5516481
Abstract: A pressure medium composed of plural kinds of fluids each of which have a different density is charged in a pressure chamber forming, for example, fluid layers. A material is suspended by way of buoyancy brought by this pressure medium. By properly controlling the density of the pressure medium of plural kinds of fluids, various kinds of materials having different densities can be supported in a suspending state at an almost constant pressure. The apparatus and the method processes the material under a state of compensated-gravitation, and is capable of forming an easy-handling weightless state for a long period of time at low cost in a simple manner for ease of handling of the material being processed and can contribute to developing useful materials and novel materials and to the supplying of them in bulk.
