  • Patent number: 5950339
Abstract: An improved license plate protector comprises a one piece flexible cover made of relatively high impact strength polycarbonate resin, which remains substantially transparent and damage resistant even upon marring, scratching and weathering of the cover during use. The plate protector further comprises an improved structural technique for positioning and securing a one piece, light weight plate protector to a license plate and a motor vehicle, and protecting the license plate, through the combined use of a perimeter rib, retaining tabs, a plurality of positioning tabs, corresponding attachment locations and a plurality of attachment holes. A method of making a license plate protector as described comprises the steps of drying polycarbonate resin with a heater, and forming a license plate protector by application of heat and pressure to such resin in a molding device having mold surfaces comprising material selected from the group consisting of stainless steel and chrome plating.

  • Patent number: 5853510
Abstract: A method of making a composite comprises applying controlled heating to a bonding surface of a preformed substantially rigid thermoplastic substrate to cause the bonding surface to flow, without causing substantial heat soaking, melting, or other damage to a residue portion of the substrate, or a second component known as a bonding layer. The method further comprises causing pressurized contact at an interface between the bonding surface and the bonding layer, while the bonding surface is in a flow state. The invention further contemplates an apparatus for making a composite, comprising a heater capable of applying controlled heating to the bonding surface, and a bonding device in communication with the heater for creating pressurized contact at the interface between the bonding surface and the bonding layer, following controlled heating.

  • Patent number: 5755882
Abstract: A closed loop controllable fluid application system is provided, comprising a substantially enclosed housing, having horizontal and vertical surfaces, with an inlet and an outlet slot formed in opposing vertical surfaces allowing passage of a work piece through the housing; and a mist outlet and a sump drain each formed in one of a horizontal and a vertical surface. Fluid circulation lines communicate with the housing and an application fluid source, terminating inside the housing with a connection to one or more controllable spray devices for delivering atomized application fluid to coat passing work pieces. A mist collector evacuates air through the mist outlet and extracts application fluid from the evacuated air. The mist collector and the sump drain are connected to fluid circulation lines for recycling excess liquid and air-borne application fluid.

  • Patent number: 5756406
Abstract: A method for making a soft trim composite, and a resulting improved soft trim composite, used for example as a motor vehicle interior trim component or a seat covering component, comprises laminating a surface covering onto an expanded cellular layer, where a cellular layer is provided, to form a bilaminate, and placing a heat barrier insert, comprising nonwoven fibers coated on one side with thermoplastic resin in a mold between the bilaminate and a substrate created in a molding step. The heat barrier insert dissipates heat from substrate molding, permitting a substantially uniform and complete bonded relation to be achieved between substrate and insert, as well as between insert and bilaminate, virtually simultaneously with creation of the substrate, and without causing substantial damage to the bilaminate. An improved soft trim composite made by the method described, is also provided.

  • Patent number: 5687962
Abstract: A work support incorporating an improved bearing locking mechanism comprises a body having a first and second end and a body bore defined by a body inner wall; a pin defining a pin ramp and slidably positioned within the body bore to receive a work piece load; a plurality of roller bearings circumferentially spaced about the body bore; a nose cap closing the first end, and a cage assembly to engage roller bearings, close the second end and form a barrier to receive fluid back pressure. Introduction of fluid back pressure and work piece load rotates the roller bearings toward the pin ramp and urges the pin in an opposing direction, locking the roller bearings, pin ramp and body inner wall. The work piece load and fluid back pressure are both introduced and then both removed to respectively cause locking and unlocking to occur.
