  • Patent number: 7205779
Abstract: An apparatus and method for determining and monitoring the moisture content of an elastomer material used as a closure or stopper for containers holding lyophilized pharmaceutical products, comprising a parallel capacitance circuit formed by supplying a source of AC voltage to a reference elastomer closure and a sample elastomer closure. The capacitance of the sample elastomer closure is measured and compared with the capacitance of the reference elastomer closure. The difference in capacitances of the sample elastomer closure and the reference elastomer closure allow the absorbed moisture content of the sample closure to be determined or monitored. The method does not require destruction of the sample elastomer closure, and can be used to rapidly determine moisture content under normal storage conditions or at elevated or lower temperatures.

  • Patent number: 7182479
Abstract: A portable, hand-held, electrically powered, high intensity directed light beam generating device for use as a replacement for a pyrotechnic flare for search and rescue, especially in a marine environment. The light intensity is generated by a xenon strobe flash tube in a covered, mirror reflective housing that allows for a directional beam of light of less than 6 steradians. The limited radiation light direction provides a safe optical solution for the user to prevent eye damage while increasing the beam intensity and range. The light and illumination section surrounding the strobe flash tube includes thermally conductive paths for the heat generated by the flash tube to be transmitted to the outside of the housing.

  • Patent number: 7168689
Abstract: A sturdy aluminum pedestrian and bicyclist safety railing that reduces the amount of welding required during construction, comprising top and bottom rigid bars, each having a longitudinal, radially extending exterior passage and a plurality of aluminum pickets mounted within said bar top and bottom channels and held apart by a plurality of spacer plugs that interlock and snap snugly into each top and bottom bar channel and act as spacers to separate the pickets. The top and bottom bars may be welded together at each end of the railing to hold the entire unit together, retaining the plurality of rigid pickets that are substantially perpendicular (or inclined) to the top and bottom bars. The pickets are supported in the top and bottom bar channels without welding for increased strength and reduced cost of construction.

  • Patent number: 7153471
Abstract: A method of decontaminating a structure contaminated by pathogenic microorganisms such as bacillus anthracis and its spores, B. subtilis var niger and its spores, and B. stearothermophilus and its spores. The steps include sealing a contaminated structure sufficiently to enable retention of a gas, introducing methyl bromide gas into sealed contaminated structure to a concentration of methyl bromide in an amount sufficient to deactivate said pathogenic microorganisms and to disable germination of pathogenic bacteria spores, and maintaining said sealed contaminated structure with said concentration of methyl bromide at a sufficient temperature for a sufficient period of time, and deactivating said pathogenic microorganisms and disabling germination of said pathogenic bacteria spores associated with said contaminated structure. The method is performed approximately in the range of 20° C. to 40° C., and the concentration of methyl bromide is about 80 mg/l to 303 mg/l during the decontamination.

  • Patent number: 7134763
Abstract: A surgical headlight that includes a small housing containing an LED white light source and light transmission elements including a fiber optic rod and lenses. The headlight housing is attached to a device worn by a surgeon. The LED provides a high intensity, light weight light source that can be varied in intensity through the power supply. Using the present invention, a very high intense illumination source of white light is achieved in a small housing for illuminating a surgical area.

  • Patent number: 7132961
Abstract: A method and system to rapidly, passively, range and track maneuvering airborne emitters (enemy targets and threats) for tactical fighters using batch based recursive estimators for track initialization and track maintenance that includes providing information processing that has angle and signal amplitude data, threat database, and feedback from pilot cue analysis. The system includes pilot cue analysis which computes airborne emitter (target and threat) heading and corresponding accuracy to determine if sufficient accuracy is available to present the pilot with proper pilot cue options. The first stage is a range bank also called a compound parallel hypothesis evaluator and the second stage is an interactive multi-model. Both stages provide for the output of the algorithm to be a range measurement and an associated confidence factor. The algorithm inputs azimuth angle elevation angle and range and is capable of inputting data from three different data pre-processors (i.e., sensor data fusion).

  • Patent number: 7121996
Abstract: A method and apparatus for repairing a severed spinal cord using natural processes and patient's own resources, which includes removing cells from the patient, such as embryonic and somatic cells, and a segment of vein from the patient. The vein segment is used to encase the severed portion of the spinal cord. The cultured cells of the patient are injected into the encasement of vein segment surrounding the severed spinal cord. A chip that can generate a magnetic or electric field is then placed on top of the vein to provide a magnetic or electric field on the severed area of the spinal cord that includes the patient's cultured cells. The purpose is to repair spinal cord damage through regeneration using a patient's own cells and magnetic or electromagnetic energy.

  • Patent number: 7116272
Abstract: The present invention relates to a system and method for locating the direction and distance to a RF signal source from an avalanche beacon to find an avalanche victim. The system and method includes a RF signal locator and a graphical display residing on the signal locator. The receiver graphical display provides the searcher with an initial way point reading that includes directional and distance data associated with the beacon RF signal source from the avalanche beacon. The directional and distance data is based upon the received RF signals. A processor within the locator receiver receives and measures RF signals emitted by the RF signal source. The locator advantageously provides continuous subsequent way point readings for the user, where the subsequent way point readings include directional and distance data associated with the RF signal source. The distance data provided by the subsequent way point readings is based upon a path loss slope of the received RF signals from the avalanche beacon.

  • Patent number: 7104451
Abstract: A system for bar code error detection in large volume mailings against a print run which prints the bar code on a mail piece. The system checks the print quality of the bar code and compares it with pre-selected standards. The bar code is then decoded, and compared to a database in the computer to confirm that the bar code is valid. The system then prints out a report to certify the sampling, comparisons and error rate for all verification tests. The report may be used by the United States Post Office to expedite bulk mailing by a direct mailer.
