  • Patent number: 6585051
Abstract: A hydraulically operated fluid metering apparatus provides discharge of a known volume of fluid to an actuator of a well tool. In one described embodiment, the fluid metering apparatus is connected to a hydraulic input of a well tool actuator. Discharge of the known volume of fluid to the actuator input causes a piston of the actuator to displace a known distance, thereby producing a known increment of actuation of the well tool. The discharge of the known volume of fluid may be repeated to produce a desired total degree of actuation of the well tool.

  • Patent number: 6585040
Abstract: A downhole drilling apparatus for interconnection in a casing or liner string having a drill bit disposed thereon for enabling the drilling of intersecting wellbores without removal of the drill bit is disclosed. In a disclosed embodiment, the apparatus comprises a housing having a window. A whipstock is disposed within the housing. Between the window and the whipstock is a filler. The whipstock and the filler define a central bore providing a fluid path through the apparatus. A back pressure valve may be disposed within the central bore to prevent back flow of fluids through the apparatus. Once the total depth of an initial wellbore is reached, the casing or liner string, including the apparatus, may be cemented in place. Thereafter, an intersecting wellbore may be drilled by laterally deflecting a second drill bit with the whipstock through the window of the housing.

  • Patent number: 6565093
Abstract: A seal structure is provided for a downhole tool. In a described embodiment, a seal structure includes a seal support ring having at least one annular groove formed thereon and a longitudinal axis. At least one seal is included in the seal structure. The seal is disposed at least partially in the groove, and the seal is bonded to the ring. An annular recess is positioned longitudinally between opposing side walls of the groove. The recess may be formed in a body of the seal.

  • Patent number: 6564870
Abstract: Expanding packers for use in oil or gas wellbores, with and without casing, for isolating a casing annulus or geologic formation from the remainder of the wellbore and for increasing production flow rates. These expanding packers are useful in completing sidetracked wells.

  • Patent number: 6003601
Abstract: A method of completing a subterranean well and associated apparatus therefor provide efficient operation and convenience in completions where production of fluids from a lateral wellbore and a parent wellbore is desired. In one disclosed embodiment, the invention provides a method whereby a tubular member may be extended from a parent wellbore into a lateral wellbore, without the need of deflecting the tubular member off of a whipstock or other inclined surface. The tubular member may be previously deformed and initially constrained within a housing, so that as the tubular member extends outwardly from the housing, the tubular member is permitted to deflect laterally toward the lateral wellbore.

  • Patent number: 5964296
Abstract: A service tool for use in completion operations includes a fluid control apparatus therein. The apparatus permits variable regulation of fluid flow downhole, selective opening and closing of multiple fluid ports in the apparatus, protection against overpressurization and communication with the earth's surface. Each of these functions is accomplished by displacing a member of the apparatus with an electromechanical device. In particular, data transmission is performed by displacing the member relative to a fluid port to thereby produce pressure pulses in a fluid flowing therethrough.

  • Patent number: 5810083
Abstract: An annular safety valve system provides a retrievable annular safety valve and packer. In a preferred embodiment, an annular safety valve system has an annular safety valve connected to an upper tubing string extending to the earth's surface. The annular safety valve is initially connected to the hydraulically set packer which has no openings through an inner mandrel thereof. The safety valve is retrievable separate from the packer after the packer has been set. The safety valve is rotated relative to the packer in order to release the safety valve from the packer. As the safety valve is rotated, a setting line of the packer is severed. Other transmission lines, electrical wires, etc. may be severed as well. The safety valve may then be raised to the earth's surface with the tubing above it. A replacement safety valve is also provided for installing in the packer after the prior safety valve is retrieved.

  • Patent number: 5803179
Abstract: A drainage pipe section for a horizontal subterranean well has a base pipe coaxially circumscribed by a tubular structure having a longitudinally intermediate portion defined by a sand screen assembly. An annular flow passage is formed between the base pipe and the tubular structure and communicates with the interior of the base pipe via base pipe sidewall openings positioned inwardly adjacent opposite end portions of the tubular structure. Annular adjustable flow control members having variable length labyrinth passages recessed into their outer sides are coaxially interposed in the annular flow passage between the opposite ends of the sand screen assembly and the base pipe sidewall openings. The flow control members are sealed within the annular flow passage by means of a rubber coating adhered to their outer side surfaces, and an adhesive type sealant material injected into annular spaces between the flow control members and facing portions of the base pipe.
