    Abstract: A circuit protection device for protecting batteries is formed from a resistive element composed of a PTC conductive polymer composition and two electrodes. The device has a resistive element thickness of 0.025 to 0.20 mm; a crosslinking level equivalent to 1 to 20 Mrads; a surface area of at most 120 mm.sup.2 ; a resistance at 20.degree. C., R.sub.20, of at most 0.030 ohm; and a resistivity at 20.degree. C., .rho..sub.20, of at most 2.0 ohm-cm. Devices of the invention are sufficiently small to be easily inserted into an assembly comprising a battery, particularly a rechargeable battery, and the device. Such assemblies are used for powering portable electronic equipment such as cellular telephones.

    Abstract: An electrical device in which a first resistive element which is composed of a first electrically non-linear composition is in electrical contact, and preferably in physical and electrical contact, with a second resistive element which is composed of a second composition which has a resistivity of less than 100 ohm-cm. The first composition has a resistivity of more than 10.sup.9 ohm-cm and contains a first particulate filler. The second composition contains a second particulate filler which (a) is magnetic and electrically conductive, and (b) is aligned in discrete regions in the second polymeric component. The device also contains first and second electrodes which are positioned so that current can flow between the electrodes through the first and second resistive elements. Devices of the invention have relatively low breakdown voltages and can survive high energy fault conditions.

    Abstract: A circuit protection arrangement that is intended to be series connected in a line of an electrical circuit comprises a transistor switch 1 that controls the circuit current and has a control input, and a control arrangement that controls the voltage of the control input of the switch. The control arrangement comprises a comparator circuit 3 that compares a fraction of the voltage across the switch 1 with a reference voltage, for example supplied by a Zener diode or bandgap diode, and opens the switch if the fraction is greater than the reference voltage. The comparator circuit is powered by the voltage drop in the line across the switch so that the arrangement can be formed as a two-terminal device that requires no external power source.The arrangement has the advantage that it exhibits a relatively small variation in performance with respect to temperature variations.

    Abstract: A composition which comprises a matrix polymer and, distributed therein, a particulate conductive filler. At least some of the filler particles are composed of a conductive polymer composition and/or the matrix comprises a sintered polymer. The matrix polymer and the filler particles and the method of distributing the particles are such that the particles maintain their identity in the matrix. For example, the particles are preferably highly cross-linked so that they have a hot modulus of at least 250 psi if the composition is prepared by melt extrusion or another process involving a high degree of shear; or a low-shear process such as sintering can be used. Preferably the matrix polymer is capable of coating the filler particles; for example, the matrix polymer and the filler polymer may be chemically similar. The invention is particularly useful for preparing compositions which have high resistivities, e.g. 1000 ohm.cm or more, and which can be prepared with a high degree of reproduceability.

    Abstract: Circuit protection devices which comprise a PTC conductive polymer element and a second electrical component which is thermally coupled to the PTC element and which, when a fault causes the current in the circuit to become excessive, generates heat which is transferred to the PTC element, thus reducing the time taken to "trip" the PTC element. The second component is for example a voltate-dependent resistor which is connected in series with the PTC element under the fault conditions and is thus protected from damage. Alternatively, the second component is a thick film resistor which is connected in series with the PTC element.
