  • Patent number: 6850568
Abstract: A method and apparatus for decoding an input MPEG video stream are provided that includes a core processor with a very long instruction word (VLIW) processor and a co-processor that includes a variable length decoder (VLD) for decoding the MPEG video stream. The input MPEG video stream is organized into macroblocks, wherein each macroblock includes a header for a macroblock that is not decoded, and encoded data for a macroblock whose header is previously decoded by VLD. Thereafter, VLD decodes the encoded video data of a first macroblock whose header has been decoded, and decodes the header of a second (current) macroblock. VLIW then performs motion compensation on a current macroblock based upon reference data of a previously decoded macroblock. VLIW also adds a fake slice start code and fake macroblock data at the end of each picture into the input MPEG video data stream; and utilizes the fake slice start code and fake macroblock data to skip to a next slice.

Abstract: A method and apparatus is provided for using optical time-domain reflectometry (OTDR) with a WDM transmission system that includes a plurality of terminals interconnected by at least two pairs of unidirectional optical transmission paths each of which has at least one repeater therein. The method begins by transmitting an optical probe signal from a first OTDR unit associated with a first terminal into the repeater over a first optical path in a first of the at least two pairs of unidirectional optical transmission paths. The first OTDR unit receives a first returned OTDR signal over a second optical path in the first optical path pair. The first OTDR signal contains status information concerning the first optical path in the first optical path pair. The optical probe signal from the first optical path in the first optical path pair is coupled to a second optical path in the second optical path pair.

  • Patent number: 6794567
Abstract: Electronic Music Distribution (EMD), wherein music stored as digital files is downloadable by end users from retail computer databases or from Peer to Peer “file sharing” databases such as Napster, has developed rapidly in the recent past as an alternative to the traditional distribution channels for recorded music. While EMD holds great promise as a distribution vehicle, certain limitations exist with regard to the capability of existing distribution models to classify or characterize the audio quality of the files available for download. This limitation is particularly acute in the Peer-to-Peer context where the downloadable database consists of files from a multiplicity of sources. The present invention utilizes an objective measure of audio quality that is, in one embodiment, presented as part of a response to a user or subscriber search query.

  • Patent number: 6794251
Abstract: A method is provided for forming a power semiconductor device. The method begins by providing a substrate of a first or second conductivity type and then forming a voltage sustaining region on the substrate. The voltage sustaining region is formed by depositing an epitaxial layer of a first conductivity type on the substrate and forming at least one trench in the epitaxial layer. A first layer of polysilicon having a second dopant of the second conductivity type is deposited in the trench. The second dopant is diffused to form a doped epitaxial region adjacent to the trench and in the epitaxial layer. A second layer of polysilicon having a first dopant of the first conductivity type is subsequently deposited in the trench. The first and second dopants respectively located in the second and first layers of polysilicon are interdiffused to achieve electrical compensation in the first and second layers of polysilicon.

  • Patent number: 6791942
Abstract: To reduce power consumption of a communications interface between a network and a processor, a method for controlling the interface monitors data traffic from sides of the interface. Upon detecting a predetermined period of no data traffic on both sides, the method disables an auto-negotiation mode of the interface and forces the interface to operate at its lowest speed. Prior to changing speed, the method may briefly remove a link signal or electrically isolate the network and the network interface to allow a peer to adapt to a new speed. When in the low speed mode, the method monitors data on both the processor side and the network side. Upon detecting a predetermined and configurable amount of data, the method enables the auto-negotiate mode. Prior to increasing the speed, the method may briefly remove a link signal to allow a peer to adapt to the new speed. Hysteresis may be included to prevent a speed change if a predetermined period has not occurred since a last speed change.
