Patent number: 6902110Abstract: In general, the invention is directed to techniques for creating and controlling a magnetic field for use with electronic article surveillance (EAS) markers. In particular, the techniques make use of current switching devices to generate a signal having one or more current pulses for creating the magnetic field. An electronic article surveillance (EAS) system includes a coil to create a magnetic field for changing a status of an EAS marker and a drive unit to output a signal having one or more current pulses for energizing the coil. A programmable processor within the EAS system controls the drive unit to generate the output signal according to a desired profile. By selectively activating and deactivating current switching devices within the drive unit, the processor can direct the drive unit to generate the output signal according to a desired profile having a number of current pulses of different amplitudes and direction.Type: GrantFiled: January 8, 2004Date of Patent: June 7, 2005Assignee: 3M Innovative Properties CompanyInventors: Anthony Michael Belka, Peter John Zarembo, Edward David Goff

Patent number: 6861993Abstract: The invention provides a multi-loop antenna that produces an electromagnetic field having a magnitude of at least an interrogation threshold of a tag for a substantial portion of an interrogation region located in a plane parallel to the antenna. The antenna may include a plurality of loops, including one or more powered loops and one or more parasitic loops. The parasitic loops receive power from mutual coupling with the powered loops causing current to flow within the parasitic loops, which contributes to the profile of the magnetic field. As a result, each parasitic loop may be tuned to provide control over the magnitude of the electromagnetic field. The powered loops and the parasitic loops may be varied over the interrogation period to reduce any area of the interrogation region where the magnitude of the field remains below the interrogation threshold throughout the interrogation period. The powered loops and the parasitic loops may reside on a single layer or may be arranged on multiple layers.Type: GrantFiled: March 3, 2003Date of Patent: March 1, 2005Assignee: 3M Innovative Properties CompanyInventor: Michele A. Patent number: 6816125Abstract: Manufacturing techniques are described for forming electrical components. For example, a layer of a metal powder composition is deposited onto at least a portion of a substrate. Pressure is applied to the metal powder composition by hydraulic press that has one or more projections in order to capture a pattern on the substrate. The metal powder composition compressed by the projections of the hydraulic press adhere to the substrate to form the captured pattern. Patent number: 6693541Abstract: Radio frequency identification tag devices with bridge circuit assemblies and methods for high-volume, low-cost production are disclosed. The bridge circuit assemblies and methods of the present invention can reduce the complexity of the RFID tag devices by providing a one-sided circuit design. The resonant frequency of the circuits formed on the devices may be tuned by severing selected connections to one or more tuning capacitor plates that form a part of the capacitor structure. Severing connections to the tuning capacitor plates changes the capacitance of the circuit that, in turn, changes the resonant frequency of the circuit. Further, the devices and methods of the present invention allow for the option of placing a die either on the antenna substrate or on the bridge circuit assembly.Type: GrantFiled: July 19, 2001Date of Patent: February 17, 2004Inventor: William C.
