Abstract: A co-polymer of isobutene and 4-bromo-3-methyl-1-butene formed by direct co-polymerization in a single-step process. A continuous process for forming the co-polymer preferably comprises periodic or semi-continuous addition of catalyst to a mixed monomer solution. Semi-continuous reverse addition of the mixed monomer solution to a pre-provided catalyst solution may also be employed. The co-polymer exhibits allylic bromide functionality and is advantageously curable by either ZnO curing systems or sulfur-based curing systems.

Abstract: The present invention relates to dithiocarbamic esters, their preparation and their use for regulating the degree of polymerization during the polymerization of monomers, such as during the polymerization of chloroprene to give polychloroprene, and during the polymerization of 2,3-dichlorobutadiene to give poly-2,3-dichlorobutadiene, and during the copolymerization of chloroprene with 2,3-dichlorobutadiene. The present invention further relates to polymers which are obtainable via the polymerization of monomers in the presence of the dithiocarbamic esters of the invention. The present invention also relates to polymers which contain end groups derived from the dithiocarbamic esters of the present invention.

Abstract: In an isoolefin-diolefin rubber production process (e.g. a butyl rubber production process), the cold rubber slurry produced in the reaction vessel is transported from the reaction vessel to the flash tank during which time the cold slurry may be expressed to separate at least part of the cold liquid reaction medium from the isoolefin-diolefin rubber. The separated cold liquid reaction medium is transported off stream, for example by a mechanical filter, where it can be recycled back into the reaction vessel and/or where it can be used to cool a feed stream or streams of the reaction components. The isoolefin-diolefin rubber and the residual liquid reaction medium are transported to a flash tank for further processing. The ability to separate and recycle cold liquid reaction medium makes the process more economical.
Abstract: Crosslinkable compositions based on at least one copolyester as thermoplastic elastomer and on ?-olefin-vinyl acetate copolymers having a vinyl acetate content of ?40% by weight, where the compositions comprise a peroxide as crosslinking initiator. The present invention further relates to the preparation of the crosslinkable compositions of the invention, to the use of the crosslinkable compositions of the invention for the production of thermoplastic elastomers, to a process for the crosslinking of the compositions of the invention to give a thermoplastic elastomer of the invention, and also to the thermoplastic elastomers of the invention themselves and to their use for the production of mouldings.

Abstract: The invention relates to nanocomposites and processes for making nanocomposites comprising butyl rubber ionomers having at least 3.5 mol % of repeating units derived from a multiolefin monomer, such as isoprene. More particularly, the invention relates to butyl rubber ionomer nanocomposites comprising high aspect ratio fillers. In one preferred aspect of the invention, the nanocomposites comprise ionomers that are generated in situ during formation of the nanocomposite, leading to intercalation of the ionomer with the nanocomposite. Nanocomposites according to the present invention exhibit improved impermeability and tensile properties as compared with prior art nanocomposites made using conventional brominated butyl rubber.
Abstract: A halogenated butyl polymer having improved properties, the butyl polymer derived from a monomer mixture comprising a C4 to C8 monoolefin monomer, a C4 to C14 multiolefin monomer and a styrenic monomer with a catalyst system to produce the butyl polymer. The improved properties include faster cure, higher maximum torque, higher delta torque, relatively stable modulus over time, improved hot air aging properties and improved aged flexure properties. These improved properties are believed to result from direct interaction between the styrenic moieties in the polymer backbone with a crosslinking agent added to vulcanize the halogenated butyl rubber.
Abstract: A cationic polymerization process for isoolefins using a zinc halide initiator. The zinc halide initiator is added to a solution of the isoolefin in a suitable solvent, preferably a halocarbon solvent. Polymerization reactions are normally conducted at temperatures high enough to allow the zinc halide initiator to dissolve in the solution. An alkyl halide activator may optionally be used and is preferably added to the solution prior to the zinc halide initiator. A multiolefin may optionally be present in the solution. The process is particularly useful in the formation of isoolefin homopolymers and co-polymers of isoolefins and multiolefins, such as butyl rubber.
