    Abstract: A precursor yarn or thread is made by passing a central element, e.g., a filament, a tow, or a flat member, through a bath of a binder, such as a low-temperature hot-melt adhesive, and aqueous urethane, or an acrylic material, with which is mixed a quantity of hard-shelled microspheres which expand when heated to a higher temperature. This is then covered by a sheath, e.g, of PVC, polyurethane, polyester, acrylic resin, polycarbonate, polypropylene, or polyethylene in a second bath. When this product is heated to a transition temperature which is characteristic of the microspheres chosen, the microspheres expand, swelling the sheath. Such a precursor could be woven into a fabric and then heated, so that as the yarn expands the fabric mesh becomes tighter, reducing its porosity. This would be useful as a yarn in making papermaker's felts.

One or more battery-powered fans draw air from around all or defined portions of the periphery of the interior volume of the Wall Racer through a carefully-shaped duct, so that the air in the portion of the duct immediately adjacent the surface flows at high velocity and low pressure; the relatively greater pressure of the surrounding air urges the vehicle against the surface, allowing it to adhere to vertical surfaces, such as walls, or operated inverted on horizontal surfaces, such as ceilings.

    Abstract: A method and system for an external combustion engine operable using at least two different fluids to provide pressure volume work to an engine. The engine is started by providing a compressed fluid at a sufficient pressure to move internal components of the engine that in turn rotate a shaft to generate power. At the same time the compressed fluid is provided to the engine, a liquid fluid is provided to a heater to be heated. The liquid fluid is heated to its boiling point and converted to gas form. Additional heat is provided to increase the pressure of this gas fluid. Once the pressure is increased to a sufficient level, the gas fluid is injected into the engine to generate power. The gas is exhausted from the engine, and is cooled and separated back into the two separate fluids. The initial compressed fluid is recompressed for later use.

    Abstract: Multifilamentary core yarns of brittle, high-modulus materials are partially encased in a “wrapper” of another material. The wrapped core yarn is then coated with an adhesive that remains tacky over time. The coated wrapped yarn can then be spooled and stored indefinitely; when it is desired to be used, the yarn can be pulled off the spool without “blocking”, that is, the presence of the wrapper precludes damage to the brittle filaments of the core yarn caused by filaments of adjacent strands of the yarn adhering to one another. The tacky surface allows the yarn to be disposed where desired against a substrate, and heat and pressure to be applied to ensure that it will remain in position. Various processes previously not feasible with brittle, high-modulus multifilamentary yarns can be practiced.

    Abstract: A small outboard motor powered boat comprises a hull undersurface that defines a generally flat central section, with two generally parallel-sided pontoons extending rearwardly from an upturned bow to a point about half the length of the hull aft. A stern rake section begins at a transverse line near the transom of the hull and forms a downward angle with respect to the flat central section. At speed, air is entrained between the pontoons, providing lift to the bow of the vessel, while the after portion is supported by the stern rake section. Thus, the vessel effectively rides on the pontoons and the stern rake section, reducing wetted surface and thus improving efficiency. The downwardly-extending lengthwise sides of the pontoons provide lateral surface, providing good steering characteristics.

    Abstract: A two-step chemical precipitation process involving hydroxide precipitation and sulfide precipitation combined with “field separation ” technology such as magnetic separation, dissolved air flotation, vortex separation, or expanded plastics flotation, effectively removes chelated and non-chelated heavy metal precipitates and other fine particles from water. In the first-step, the non-chelated heavy metals are precipitated as hydroxides and removed from the water by a conventional liquid/solids separator such as an inclined plate clarifier to remove a large percentage of the dissolved heavy metals. The cleaned water is then treated in a second precipitation step to remove the residual heavy metals to meet discharge limits. In the second precipitation step, any metal precipitant more effective than hydroxide for metal precipitation can be used.
