  • Patent number: 7861628
Abstract: A calibration procedure is carried out for determining the displacement distance from a reference point to the center of the blade in a web cutter in a mail inserter. A photosensor is placed near the paper plane of the web cutter to sense a web edge at the reference point downstream or upstream from the blade. At the start of the calibration procedure, the blade is caused to cut the web for providing a web edge. The web edge is moved in a backward and forward motion over the photosensor a few times for determining the theoretical center position of the photosensor relative to the position where the web is cut by the blade. By taking into account the chip-out width, the displacement distance from the center of the photosensor to the center of the chip out blade can be determined.

  • Patent number: 7862039
Abstract: A high-speed printing and sorting machine. A first diverter diverts a first batch of items into a first bin, a second diverter diverts a second batch into a second bin, and so on. A plurality of O-rings and flat belts confront one another and rotate in opposite directions to carry diverted items to their respective bins. A nip formed by opposed rollers causes the items to slow down. Protruding rollers constrain the items to momentarily deviate from a path of travel and the inherent resiliency of the O-rings is harnessed to snap the trailing ends of each slowing down leading item out of the way of the trailing item so that shingling may occur. If a gap between items is too large, the opposed rollers of the nip stop rotating until the gap is restored to a preferred distance so that the desired amount of shingling may be maintained.

  • Patent number: 7859563
Abstract: A method and system for use in viewing a mail item moving in a mailing machine. A video camera is used to acquire an image of the mail item, and a light source triggered by one of the vertical sync pulses provided by the video camera is used to provide repeated short flashes of light to illuminate the mail item while its image is acquired by the camera. Preferably, a sensor is used to provide an arrival signal when the mail item enters the field-of-view of the camera so that the light source is triggered only when it is also enabled by the arrival signal. A video display device, operatively connected to the video camera, is used to display the acquired image for viewing. Alternatively, the acquired image is stored in a storage device for viewing at a later time.

  • Patent number: 7849317
Abstract: The present invention uses an element of digital data that is created during digital postage mark (DPM) generation process from the digital image of the destination address block. The digital data is included into recoverable portion of the digital signature and imprinted on a mailpiece. During DPM verification, a representative portion of a destination address block image is retrieved in its original form from the digital signature itself. The retrieved portion of the image then can be compared with the similar digital data obtained from the scanned destination address block obtained during normal mail scanning and processing activities. If the comparison is under a predetermined threshold, then the DPM is declared authentic and the mailpiece can be processed and delivered with confidence. If, on the other hand, the threshold is not met, the DPM is declared a copy or a counterfeit of another DPM and the mailpiece can be subjected to further investigation.
