Patent number: 5134214Abstract: Copolymers comprising, in polymerized form, a 1,1-substituted arylethylene comonomer and at least one polymaleimide comonomer, are prepared using a system that provides a reduced onset of polymerization temperature thereby allowing removal of the copolymer from the mold after a preliminary curing period followed by transfer to an oven, a less expensive piece of equipment, for additional curing; thus making the mold, a more expensive piece of equipment, available for the next polymerization run.Type: GrantFiled: May 15, 1991Date of Patent: July 28, 1992Assignee: The Dow Chemical CompanyInventors: Kenneth J. Bruza, Robert A. Kirchhoff

Patent number: 5091124Abstract: A high tonnage reaction injection molding (RIM) press has fixed and movable platens for clamping a composite mold therebetween at a closed mold position. A plurality of high pressure hydraulic cylinders are mounted on a carrier for the movable platen, and a locking mechanism having a plurality of incrementally spaced locking positions is effective to lock the carrier selectively at said positions. A pair of low power hydraulic piston-cylinder assemblies connected with the carrier adjacent to its opposite ends move the carrier and movable platen to the closed position. Short stroke connecting rods operated by the high pressure cylinders are forced independently of each other into high tonnage engagement with the movable platen at a plurality of locations within the area of the composite mold to clamp the latter between the platens and positively seal its junctions, whereupon a RIM mix head injects the high pressure reactive chemicals into the sealed mold.Type: GrantFiled: January 22, 1991Date of Patent: February 25, 1992Assignee: The Dow Chemical CompanyInventor: Paul Zakich

Patent number: 4558120Abstract: Dense star polymers having terminal group densities greater than conventional star polymers exhibit greater and more uniform reactivity than their corresponding conventional star polymers. For example, a third generation, amine-terminated polyamidoamine dense star polymer prepared from ammonia, methyl acrylate and ethylenediamine has 1.24.times.10.sup.-4 amine moieties per unit volume (cubic Angstrom units) in contrast to the 1.58.times.10.sup.-6 amine moieties per unit volume contained by a conventional star polymer. Such dense star polymers are useful as demulsifiers for oil/water emulsions, wet strength agents in the manufacture of paper, and agents for modifying viscosity in aqueous formulations such as paints.Type: GrantFiled: December 27, 1983Date of Patent: December 10, 1985Assignee: The Dow Chemical CompanyInventors: Donald A. Patent number: 4550157Abstract: Novel polyamide block copolymers are provided which comprise a central block of a soft segment derived from the residue of a polymeric polyol or polyamine joined to terminal hard segment polyamide blocks. The linkages which join the blocks are of a novel type and are the opened form of certain bis azetidine-2,4-dione rings. The block copolymers can be prepared very rapidly via anionically polymerizing lactams on to prepolymer soft segments containing terminal azetidine-2,4-dione rings. The speed with which the polymerizations can be carried out make the block copolymers particularly useful for the RIM preparation of molded parts.Type: GrantFiled: May 7, 1984Date of Patent: October 29, 1985Assignee: The Dow Chemical CompanyInventors: Shenghong A.
