  • Patent number: 4891133
Abstract: Liquid chromatography apparatus including a hollow cylinder and a fixed end closure in which the effective useful length of the cylinder is varied through the use of a piston member that slides within the cylinder due to force exerted by a threaded shaft that is connected to a handle. Binding of the piston member in the cylinder is prevented by a ball joint that operatively connects the piston member to the threaded shaft and by a plurality of O-rings located on the piston member that contact the inner wall of the cylinder and tend to prevent tipping of the piston member. Even liquid distribution and filtering is obtained through a 0.5 micron porous sintered stainless steel liquid distribution disk. A smooth inclined surface in combination with an uninterrupted ring provide a trap for bubbles of gas located inside the cylinder.

  • Patent number: 4887674
Abstract: Fire extinguisher apparatus that is operated by the force of a cartridge such as that used in a nail gun. The cartridge operated fire extinguisher has two detectors that are activated by two separate types of emissions that are characteristic of a fire. Both of these detectors must be simultaneously activated in order for the fire extinguisher apparatus to be operated by the cartridge. The fire extinguisher apparatus also is capable of shutting off electrical equipment such as stoves.

  • Patent number: 4870829
Abstract: Biological freezing apparatus for use on unmodified laboratory liquid cryogen storage container including a specimen holder for holding biological specimens to be frozen and a motor for lowering the specimen holder into the interior of the laboratory liquid cryogen storage containers. An electronic circuit controls the motor so that the specimen holder moves into the interior of the laboratory liquid cryogen storage container at a predetermined desired rate. The specimen holder is constructed of a non-thermally conductive material and this plus its configuration along with the movement of the specimen holder downward at a predetermined rate allows freezing of live biological specimens without doing substantial damage to the specimens.

  • Patent number: 4868767
Abstract: Apparatus and method are disclosed for detecting the presence of a analyte in a sample. The apparatus includes an optical transmitter and receiver for transmitting light toward the sample and receiving a portion of the reflected light. The optical receiver acts in conjunction with a data processor to convert the reflected light to data representing the density of analyte in the sample. The apparatus thus disclosed is portable and can be transported to remote testing sites.

  • Patent number: 4854872
Abstract: A dental implant attachment system for mounting a dental prosthesis on a root implant comprises a base member having a lower end sized to seat on the upper end of an implant cylinder and an upper end of outer diameter substantially equal to the average outer diameters of various teeth, a securing device for securing the base member on the root implant, and various straight, angled or variable angled prosthetic heads for securing to the prosthesis. The upper end of the base member and the lower end of the prosthetic head have interengageable and indexable locking formations for preventing rotation between the parts which can be engaged in any of a number of possible relatively rotated fixed, indexed positions. A releasable securing device secures the prosthetic head to the base member. The prosthesis can be mounted on the prosthetic head by cementation, screw fixation, or other techniques.

  • Patent number: 4848362
Abstract: A method for therapeutic deep heating of musculoskeletal tissues with an improved transducer that serves simultaneously to couple the power from the generator into the patient and to sense the therapeutic response for treatment control including a method of manufacture and testing of contact applicators for dielectric heating of musculoskeletal tissue. The applicator is comprised of rectangular wave guide in which dielectric material is placed to reduce the guide wave length to the free-space value at the frequency of operation. In addition, the invention comprises a method and apparatus for the noninvasive detection of therapeutic response in muscle tissue to dielectric heating. Ths response is then used to control the treatment. Both heating and sensing are accomplished by one transducer and one apparatus if dielectric heating is employed.

  • Patent number: 4836228
Abstract: Container cleaning apparatus including an endless conveyor to transport the containers being cleaned through the apparatus. The container cleaning apparatus uses both high and low pressure liquid to clean the containers. The high pressure liquid is projected on the containers in a pattern that cleans the containers but does not hinder their progress on the conveyor. An agitating system is also provided that agitates the cleaned containers in a vertical direction to assist in removing liquid and drying the containers. The containers are also subjected to an air blast as they are being agitated that assists in causing evaporation of the liquid on the containers.

  • Patent number: 4802929
Abstract: The present invention provides a thermoelectric converter including a series of thermoelectric cells bonded to a hot surface and to a waste heat conductor. The heat conductor is in turn bonded to cooling pipes which have corrugations to prevent the build up of thermal stresses in one direction. Thermal stress is avoided in a second direction, perpendicular to the first, by having spaces located between the thermoelectric cells. The converter can be folded into a compact configuration and is applicable to satellite power systems.

  • Patent number: 4787836
Abstract: An injection molding nozzle for use with a flowable molding material in a mold die having an elongated member with a fluid passage extending through it and a cap member having an exit orifice in fluid communication with the fluid passage of the elongated member. A torpedo member is located partially in the fluid passage of the elongated member and the torpedo member has a projection that extends into the exit orifice in the cap member to provide heat to the adjacent flowing molding material when the molding nozzle is in use. The heat provided by this projection on the torpedo member prevents the flowing molding material in the nozzle exit from solidifying and interrupting the molding process.
