Patent number: 7953062Abstract: In a transmission scheme wherein multi-slot packet transmissions to a remote station can be terminated by an acknowledgment signal from the remote station, code symbols can be efficiently packed over the multi-slot packet so that the remote station can easily decode the data payload of the multi-slot packet by decoding only a portion of the multi-slot packet. Hence, the remote station can signal for the early termination of the multi-slot packet transmission, which thereby increases the data throughput of the system.Type: GrantFiled: January 12, 2006Date of Patent: May 31, 2011Assignee: QUALCOMM IncorporatedInventors: Nagabhushana Sindhushayana, Peter J. Patent number: 7881345Abstract: Symbol timing synchronization in OFDM communication systems where multiple wireless terminals communicate with a single base station is described. Base station transmitter and receiver symbol timing is fixed. Each wireless terminal operates to independently adjust its transmitter timing. Transmitter timing synchronization at the wireless terminal is slaved to the terminal's receiver timing synchronization. Each wireless terminal first corrects its receiver symbol timing based on a signal received from the base station. The wireless terminal then adjusts its transmitter symbol timing as a function of its receiver symbol timing. When the receiver symbol timing is to be advanced or delayed by some amount, the transmitter symbol timing is also advanced or delayed, respectively, by the same, or substantially the same, amount. Symbol timing adjustment can be made by adding or deleting digital samples from the first or last symbol in a dwell.Type: GrantFiled: February 13, 2007Date of Patent: February 1, 2011Assignee: QUALCOMM IncorporatedInventors: Rajiv Laroia, Junyi Li, Vladimir Parizhsky

Patent number: 7801227Abstract: A composite signal includes a high power beacon signal and low power corresponding wideband synchronization signal and is communicated over a time interval exceeding a single OFDM transmission time interval. A base station transmits one or more different such composite broadcast signals in a recurring timing structure. Each different potential beacon signal, e.g., a single tone signal, is paired with a unique wideband synchronization signal. A wideband synchronization signal includes at least some predetermined null tones and at least some predetermined non-null tones. For a given wideband synchronization signal, the predetermined null tones carry predetermined modulation symbol values, A wireless terminal receives a composite signal, identifies a beacon, determines a corresponding known wideband synchronization signal, compares received to known wideband synchronization signals, and determines at least one of a timing adjustment, frequency adjustment and channel estimation.Type: GrantFiled: July 14, 2006Date of Patent: September 21, 2010Assignee: QUALCOMM IncorporatedInventors: Vladimir Parizhisky, Rajiv Laroia, Alexander Leonidov, Tom Richardson, Junyi Li, Sathyadev Venkata Uppala

Patent number: 7778643Abstract: The use of multiple states of mobile communication device operation to allow a single base station to support a relatively large number of mobile nodes is described. The various states require different amounts of communications resources, e.g., bandwidth. Four supported states of operation are an on-state, a hold-state, a sleep-state, and an access-state. Each mobile node in the on-state is allocated communication resources to perform transmission power control signaling, transmission timing control signaling and to transmit data as part of a data uplink communications operation. Each mobile node in the hold-state is allocated communication resources to perform transmission timing control signaling and is provided a dedicated uplink for requesting a state transition and a shared resource for transmitting acknowledgements. In the sleep state a mobile node is allocated minimal resources and does not conduct power control signaling or timing control signaling. Data may be received in the on and hold states.Type: GrantFiled: August 7, 2003Date of Patent: August 17, 2010Assignee: QUALCOMM IncorporatedInventors: Rajiv Laroia, Junyi Li, Sathyadev Venkata Uppala

Patent number: 7715847Abstract: Systems and methods are disclosed that facilitate dynamically assigning system resources in a wireless network environment by detecting a resource conflict between an existing resource assignment to one or more existing user devices and a new resource assignment for a subsequent user device. Upon detection of a conflict, a decremental assignment can be provided to the one ore more existing user devices to decrement the existing resource assignment in order to resolve a detected resource conflict. Decremental assignments can be implicit or explicit, and can facilitate mitigating transmission overhead costs due to their relatively small size when compared to conventional complete deassignment/reassignment messages.Type: GrantFiled: May 31, 2005Date of Patent: May 11, 2010Assignee: QUALCOMM IncorporatedInventor: Edward Harrison Teague

Patent number: 7711377Abstract: Methods and apparatus for efficient two-stage paging wireless communications systems are described. Wireless terminals are assigned to paging groups. A few first paging message information bits are modulated (using non-coherent modulation) into a first paging signal and communicated from a base station to wireless terminals. WTs wake-up, receive the first paging signal and quickly ascertain whether its paging group should expect a second paging signal, if so, the WT is operated to receive the second paging signal; otherwise, the WT goes back to sleep conserving power. The base station modulates (using coherent modulation) a number of second message information bits into a second paging signal and transmits the signal to WTs. From the information in first and second paging signals, a WT can determine that it is the paged WT and process the paging instructions. The intended paged WT can transmit an acknowledgement signal on a dedicated uplink resource.Type: GrantFiled: June 10, 2004Date of Patent: May 4, 2010Assignee: QUALCOMM IncorporatedInventors: Rajiv Laroia, Junyi Li, Sundeep Rangan, Prashanth Hande

Patent number: 7623442Abstract: A method for reducing the peak-to-average ratio in an OFDM communication signal is provided. The method includes defining a constellation having a plurality of symbols, defining a symbol duration for the OFDM communication signal, and defining a plurality of time instants in the symbol duration. A plurality of tones are allocated to a particular communication device, and a discrete signal is constructed in the time domain by mapping symbols from the constellation to the time instants. A continuous signal is generated by applying an interpolation function to the discrete signal such that the continuous signal only includes sinusoids having frequencies which are equal to the allocated tones.Type: GrantFiled: July 20, 2005Date of Patent: November 24, 2009Assignee: QUALCOMM IncorporatedInventors: Rajiv Laroia, Junyi Li, Sathyadev Venkata Uppala

Patent number: 7536626Abstract: Techniques for performing erasure detection and power control for a transmission without error detection coding are described. For erasure detection, a transmitter transmits codewords via a wireless channel. A receiver computes a metric for each received codeword, compares the computed metric against an erasure threshold, and declares the received codeword to be “erased” or “non-erased”. The receiver dynamically adjusts the transmit power based on whether the codewords met the erasure threshold or not.Type: GrantFiled: December 22, 2004Date of Patent: May 19, 2009Assignee: QUALCOMM IncorporatedInventors: Arak Sutivong, Avneesh Agrawal, David Jonathan Julian

Patent number: 6621871Abstract: Bit probability estimates generated by a turbo decoder are employed to weight the bits of a received packet before combining the received packet with a redundant packet. Bits are individually weighted by the corresponding bit probability estimate and all bits within the received packet are weighted by a block confidence estimate generated from the cumulative bit probability estimates for the received packet. Weighted packet bits are combined within either weighted packet bits for the redundant packet or unweighted received bits for the redundant packet. The bits are combined by adding counterpart weighted (or weighted and unweighted) systematic and parity bit values within the two packets while inserting disjoint parity bit values within the combined result. Decoding performance for incremental redundancy systems utilizing turbo decoding is improved.Type: GrantFiled: March 30, 2001Date of Patent: September 16, 2003Assignee: Nokia CorporationInventors: J.
