  • Patent number: 8160508
Abstract: A wireless communication device uses operational parameters stored in a capabilities list to control operation of the device. The device may also provide auxiliary services, such as reception of broadcast television signals and location detection using network assisted GPS. When auxiliary services are selected, the cellular operation may cause interference with the auxiliary services. The wireless communication device includes a reduced set of capabilities to control operation of the wireless communication device when an auxiliary service is requested. The particular set of reduced capabilities may depend on the specific type of auxiliary service that has been requested. Upon termination of the auxiliary services, the full capabilities list may be restored and the operation of the wireless communication device is thereafter controlled by the full set of operational capabilities.

  • Patent number: 8151336
Abstract: Devices and methods are disclosed which provide a mobile communications device with multiple methods of wireless communication which can use one method, such as WiFi, to connect to an independent wireless access point while using another method, such as cellular, to verify the security of the wireless access point. The wireless access point provides two SSID's: one private SSID, which is usually encrypted to prevent access, and one public SSID, which is open to any mobile communications device. The mobile communications device connects to the public SSID and downloads a digital certificate. The mobile communications device then uses its cellular connection to verify the authenticity of the digital certificate with its service provider. If verified, the mobile communications device can make use of the wireless access point.

  • Patent number: 8145239
Abstract: Devices and methods are disclosed which relate to the gathering and recording of network availability and attributes in a location in order to define location based services. Registration logics onboard mobile communications devices collect network data as they roam inside and outside of their home cellular network. The registration logic sends this data to a registry in the form of a data message. The registry is updated by each instance of a received message. The aggregation of this data allows the system to adaptively learn about network availability in geographic locations. The data collected may also assist in the recovery of lost or stolen phones since the phone location is frequently updated.

  • Patent number: 8145234
Abstract: A geographic cell identification (cell ID) database is updated on the fly as, for example, roaming user equipment (UE) reports its location during Assisted Global Positioning System (A-GPS) operations. The cell ID database relates network locations to corresponding geographic locations. The cell ID database is used to retrieve a corresponding geographic location in response to the network location at which the UE reports being located. If it is found that the cell ID database does not contain the network location reported by the UE, the geographic location of the UE can be estimated using information in the reported network location, such as Mobile Network Code, Mobile Country Code, Local Area Code and Cell ID. The geographic location can then be used to obtain A-GPS assistance data for the UE. Once assistance information has been provided to the UE and the UE has determined its geographic location, the cell ID database can be updated with the determined geographic location.

  • Patent number: 8126491
Abstract: A mobile station re-tries initiating a call after a previous failure of a call to that number due to poor air interface signal communication. When the mobile station detects such a call failure, it records in memory an indication of the call failure and the number that was called. Once the mobile station has found and registered with a base station with which it is determined that good signal communication can be established, the presence of a call failure indication in memory causes the processing logic to direct the mobile station to re-try the failed call.

  • Patent number: 8110112
Abstract: A rapid one-pass liquid filtration system efficiently concentrates biological particles that are suspended in liquid from a dilute feed suspension. A sample concentrate or retentate suspension is retained while eliminating the separated fluid in a separate flow stream. Suspended biological particles include such materials as proteins/toxins, viruses, DNA, and/or bacteria in the size range of approximately 0.001 micron to 20 microns diameter. Concentration of these particles is advantageous for detection of target particles in a dilute suspension, because concentrating them into a small volume makes them easier to detect. Additional concentration stages may be added in “cascade” fashion, in order to concentrate particles below the size cut of each preceding stage remaining in the separated fluid in a concentrated sample suspension. This process can also be used to create a “band-pass” concentration for concentration of a particular target size particle within a narrow range.

  • Patent number: 8112068
Abstract: A system, computer-readable medium system, and method which provide for delivering notifications to a mobile device where the provider has first and second mobile technology types. Initially, a notification is received from a notification sub-system. A first communication of the notification to the mobile device is then attempted via the first technology type. Where the mobile device has the second technology type, an error signal is received that the attempt has failed. Next, a second communication of the notification to the mobile device is attempted via the second technology type. Where the mobile device has the second technology type and receives the notification, a delivery signal that the attempt was successful is received. After the delivery signal is received, logging of the second technology type of the mobile device is made so that thereafter, any new notification is attempted using the logged second technology type.
