Abstract: This invention involves a new device and method for treating hemorrhoids. The device has a substantially cylindrical shape and, at least at one portion, has a diameter of between about 5 mm and about 30 mm. The device is inserted into an anal canal so that it is positioned against at least one displaced anal cushion, and is maintained there for a sufficient time to achieve reduction of the displaced anal cushion.
Abstract: Compounds, compositions and methods are provided for treating malaria parasites in vitro and in vivo by administering indolo[2,1-b]quinazoline-6,12-dione compounds of Formula I.

Abstract: The invention provides a medicament for topically treating acute bacterial infections in the oral mucosa, and methods of use. The medicament comprises a dry dosage (such as a troche or powder) of one or more antibacterial agents and, preferably, one or more polyvalent metal compounds. The medicament is directly applied to the site of the infection and dissolves in saliva, within about 5 to about 15 minutes, thereby directly delivering a supratherapeutic dosage of the antibacterial agent to the infected oral tissue. Further, in a preferred embodiment the medicament directly delivers a therapeutically high concentration of a polyvalent metal compound in suspension to the infected area, thereby forming a protective barrier over the infected oral tissue.
Abstract: A device (1) for cleaning shoe soles with at least one cleaning element (2) and at least one base element (3) as support for the shoe sole, whereby the shoe sole can be cleaned/cleansed by a relative motion carried out with direct effect between the shoe sole and the cleaning element. In addition, the invention relates to a method for cleaning shoe soles, in particular with the help of the device mentioned in the beginning, whereby the shoe sole is placed on a base element (3) and the shoe sole is cleaned/cleansed by a relative motion carried out with direct effect between the shoe sole and a cleaning element (2). The cleaning effect on shoe soles is increased in that—in the case of the device—base element (3) is designed movably to create the relative motion between the shoe sole and the cleaning element (2) and/or—in the case of the method—the base element (3) is moved to create the relative motion between the shoe sole and the cleaning element (2).
Abstract: This invention relates to dry-cleaning systems which include anhydrous dry-cleaning compositions which contain polysulfonic acid, and a bag for the cleaning and containment of soiled fabric articles. In a first embodiment, the dry-cleaning compositions includes organic solvents, polysulfonic acid, and not more than about 10 wt % water. In a second embodiment, the dry-cleaning compositions includes organic solvents and polysulfonic acid, and not more than 1 about wt % water. The invention also relates to methods of using the dry-cleaning system and dry-cleaning composition.
Abstract: A novel method for eliminating or reducing, or otherwise treating, aquatic pests using juglone or juglone analogs is described. The methods are useful for removing zebra mussels and quagga mussels from water intake pipes and various other underwater hard surfaces. In addition, the methods are useful for treating dinoflaggellates, algae and amphipods, among other pests, from ballast water. A great advantage that these methods have over current protocols is that they have low environmental risk.

Abstract: The invention relates to genetical modification of DNA polymerase to reduce its innate selective sequence-related discrimination against incorporation of fluorescent dye-labeled ddCTP and ddATP in the enzymatic reaction for preparation of samples for automated florescent dye-labeled terminator DNA sequencing. The modified DNA polymerases are more resistant to heat inactivation and are more effective in dideoxynucleotide incorporation than current DNA polymerases.

Abstract: The present invention provides a method for applying a plurality, preferably two, of dermatological agents to the skin from a single dispensing and applicator sheet comprising a plurality of discrete areas comprising at least two dermatological agents which are simultaneously released from the sheet and applied to the afflicted skin area when the sheet is rubbed over wet skin.
Abstract: The invention provides a medicament for topically treating aphthous ulcers in the oral mucosa, and methods of use. The medicament comprises a troche or powder comprising a dry dosage of one or more antibiotics and, preferably, one or more polyvalent metal compounds. The troche or powder is directly applied to the aphthous ulcer and dissolves in saliva, within about 5 to about 15 minutes, thereby directly delivering a supratherapeutic dosage of the antibiotic to the ulcerated oral tissue. Further, in a preferred embodiment the troche/powder directly delivers a therapeutically high concentration of a polyvalent metal compound in suspension to the aphthous ulcer, thereby forming a protective barrier over the ulcerated oral tissue.
