  • Patent number: 5394883
Abstract: A plurality of flow sensors are fabricated using thin film deposition techniques on a single substrate. The deposition is performed to provide the proper physical relationship of the individual sensors. In the preferred embodiment, the sensors are thermoresistive elements, which change resistance in response to the flow of air across the individual elements. The change in temperature of the air flow in relation to the ambient provides an indication of the flow and may be used to determine the extent of the flow. The resulting multiple sensor structure may be effectively used as a respiration detector by positioning a different sensor element at each of the airflow orifices (i.e. two nostrils and mouth) of a patient. The individual sensor elements may be electrically coupled in series.

  • Patent number: 5372144
Abstract: A medical guidewire includes a distal end for entering and navigating in a lumen. The distal end comprises a core having a length for navigating the guidewire in the lumen. A formable distal tip is included at the distal end of the core, and a sleeve element substantially surrounds the core over less than a majority of the length of the core. The sleeve element is rotatable with respect to the core, and is offset proximally of the formable distal tip such that the formable distal tip is movable independently of the sleeve element. The sleeve element is positively coupled to the core such that the sleeve element and the core move substantially conjointly axially within the lumen. An improvement for improving navigability of a medical guidewire in a lumen is also provided. The improvement comprises a sleeve element separate from and disposed around the core. The sleeve element is rotatable with respect to the core. Multiple sleeve elements may be provided on a single core.

  • Patent number: 5363490
Abstract: An apparatus for and method of aborting the remainder of a microinstruction if a branch by that microinstruction or a subsequent microinstruction renders the results of said microinstruction to be invalid. Within an instruction processor having the capability for pipelined operation, the sensitivity of an operation of a microinstruction to the branch condition may be indicated by one or more abort bits. If an abort bit is set and the corresponding branch condition occurs, the remainder of the microinstruction is aborted. By thus indicating the sensitivity to a branch, the microinstruction can proceed under full pipeline operation until such time as a branch condition actually occurs.

  • Patent number: 5347568
Abstract: A device for identifying a specific station, among a plurality of geographically-dispersed stations represented by a common phone number and serviced by a common PBX, which has initiated an emergency "9-1-1" telephone call. The specific station having initiated the call is identified to the appropriate public safety answering point (PSAP) which is connected in an enhanced "9-1-1" emergency call network. Typically, the PSAP and PBX have different protocols. The device functions to convert the protocol of the PBX to the protocol of the emergency call network. Further, it assigns an arbitrary designation representing the specific station identified as having initiated the emergency call. Further, the invention transmits the arbitrary designation to the appropriate PSAP for responding to the call.

  • Patent number: 5256145
Abstract: A balloon catheter system having a guiding wire, a balloon, and a spring tip joined to a distal end of the guiding wire. A strain relief member covers a portion of the guiding wire between a distal end of the balloon and a proximal end of the spring tip. The strain relief member is defined by a portion of the balloon. Alternatively, the strain relief member comprises a separate tubular member.
