    Abstract: A deflated airbag is located on the outside of a missile or other vehicle beneath a folded, pivotally mounted airfoil member prior to launch, and a supply of pressurized gas is connected to the interior of the airbag via a suitable valve. After launch, or after lowering of a launch platform in the case of launch from an aircraft, an actuator such as an acceleration sensing device or timing device opens the valve, supplying gas to inflate the bag and simultaneously urge the airfoil into an extended, working position. After the airfoil is locked in its extended position, the airbag rapidly deflates and may be dropped off or retracted. Where more than one airfoil is to be deployed, separate airbags are located beneath each of the folded airfoils and a common gas supply is connected to all of the airbags.

    Abstract: An improved optical fiber suitable for use as a distributed sensor of variations in either hydrostatic pressure or temperature having two substantially hemi-cylindrical optical glass cores, the first said core having a first index of refraction and the second said core having a second index of refraction, separated by a layer of optical glass having a third index of refraction, and an outer optical glass sheath having a fourth index of refraction. The split-core optical fiber can be fabricated so that cross-talk between the two halves of the split-core is a function of hydrostatic pressure or of temperature variations.

    Abstract: A millimeter wave device having a dielectric substrate with a pair of substantially parallel planar surfaces with at least one predetermined millimeter wave circuit pattern formed in a conductive layer located on at least one of the substrate surfaces. A substantially planar conductive channel plate is mounted adjacent the conductive layer on one substrate surface with the channel plate having an aperture overlying each circuit pattern formed in the conductive layer. A substantially planar conductive cover plate is mounted adjacent one of the channel plates so as to form a first cavity in the region defined by the substrate surface, the channel plate aperture and the cover plate. The device may further include a second substantially planar conductive channel plate mounted adjacent the other one of the substrate surfaces with the second channel plate having an aperture corresponding to and aligned with the first channel plate aperture.

    Abstract: Apparatus and a process are disclosed for cleaning and/or fluxing circuit card assemblies. The assemblies are moved through an enclosure in which they are sprayed with cleaning and/or fluxing liquid from fenestrated cylinders rotating above and below the path of the assemblies and disposed laterally thereacross. The complex spray impact pattern created by the simultaneous movements of the assemblies and the cylinders effects thorough cleaning and/or fluxing of the assemblies. Separate control of liquid pressure from the cylinders prevents unsoldered components from being dislodged from the assemblies during cleaning and or fluxing.

    Abstract: An actively damped steering rate sensing device for an autopilot control system capable of producing angular rotation in a control plane of an intentionally continuously axially rolling airframe such as a homing missile in response to a rotation related guidance command signal. The device includes an elongated armature member mounted to the airframe for pivotal movement about an axis extending through the member intermediate its length. The pivot axis is oriented with respect to the rotational axis of the airframe so that the armature member will pivot by gyroscopic precession in response to rotation in the control plane of the rolling airframe. Sensing and damping coils are mounted on opposite ends of the armature member. Magnets and flux path return elements are fixedly mounted adjacent each of the coils.

    Abstract: An anti-armor weapon comprises an outer casing in which a non-explosive, armor-penetrating device, suitably a solid rod of heavy, high density metal or metal composite, is mounted. The penetrating device is mounted in a forward portion of the casing while a launch population device is mounted at the rear end for launching the weapon from a launch tube or firing barrel at a first, subsonic launch speed. A second, boost propulsion device is mounted in the casing adjacent the penetrating device for accelerating the weapon to a second, faster speed sufficient for the penetrating device to penetrate a target, and is associated with an igniter for actuating the boost propulsion device. A sensor is provided within the missile for sensing when the weapon is a predetermined distance from the target and subsequently actuating the igniter.

    Abstract: A rocket propelled missile assembly comprises an outer casing defining an internal solid rocket propellant chamber, the casing having an opening at its forward end aligned with an internal tube submerged in the rocket propellant chamber, and at least one exhaust nozzle at its rear end for venting exhaust gases from the propellant chamber. Solid propellant is contained within the propellant chamber surrounding the internal tube, and a separate terminal stage missile is partially or fully submerged in the tube with the capacity to separate from the tube forwardly through the front end of the casing. The missile separates from the remainder of the system on booster burn out.

    Abstract: An antenna system having first and second arrays of radiating members, first and second sets of corresponding bifurcated members and two pairs of feed members. The radiating members of the first and second arrays each have a near end and a far end and a linear portion therebetween with radiating slots formed therein. The linear portions of the radiating members are interleaved in a planar spaced parallel relationship. Each bifurcated member has a unitary portion and a bifurcated portion with the bifurcated portion having a pair of coupling ends. Each bifurcated member is coupled at its unitary portion to the near end of a different radiating member of its corresponding array and also coupled at its coupling ends to a different feed member of its corresponding pair of feed members. The antenna system further includes a monopulse comparator coupled to the input ends of the first and second pairs of feed members for operation as an amplitude comparison monopulse antenna.

    Abstract: A discharge control device for transferring accumulated electrostatic charge from containers used in spray painting, to a charge sink, comprising a housing having a hermetically sealed discharge chamber mounted inside. A first electrical contact for receiving an accumulated electrostatic charge is mounted in the discharge chamber in opposition to a reciprocating electrical contact for receiving and dissipating the accumulated charge from the first contact. The reciprocating contact is slidably mounted on the discharge chamber so that it moves between one position adjacent to or touching the first contact means and a second position spaced apart from the first contact. A first electrical conductor is connected between the first contact and the container, and a second conduction means is connected between the reciprocating contact means and the charge sink.
