  • Patent number: 5070536
Abstract: In an exemplary embodiment, a test signal is sent by a base station at a suitable point in a communications protocol. According to the evaluation of the test signal transmission, a relatively high data rate or a lower more conservative data rate is selected by a mobile unit for the transmission of a relatively lengthy data message. The test signal can be associated with a query from a mobile unit having a message to send, or with a contention polling message from the base. Such test signal can be transmitted at the lower data rate where its transmission characteristics (e.g. signal strength, jitter or quality of transmission of known information) can be used to predict probable feasibility of transmission at the higher data rate, but most preferably the test signal is part of a high data rate contention poll which may alternate with a low data rate contention poll.

  • Patent number: 5067249
Abstract: An instrument for measuring and converting scale dimensions such as, for example, mileage values on a map, includes a housing having a tracing wheel at one end for rolling along route lines on the map. The tracing wheel is connected to operate an actuator that causes a digital display to visually indicate a value representative of the degrees of rotation of the tracing wheel, and thus of the mileage between two points on a map. A scale adjusting device is connected with the actuator to adjust the actuator to obtain an accurate mileage indication for different scale maps.

  • Patent number: 5067363
Abstract: In order to improve a spindle drive for machine tools, comprising a housing, a spindle mounted in the housing, a drive motor arranged on the housing and a gear arranged in the housing and comprising an intermediate shaft driven by the drive motor and mounted in the housing via two shaft bearings spaced from one another as well as a first gear wheel seated on the intermediate shaft, wherein for driving the spindle as C-axis the first gear wheel engages in a first position with a second gear wheel driving the spindle so as to mesh with the second gear wheel without clearance, such that it is more simple in construction it is suggested that the first shaft bearing fix the intermediate shaft immovably on the housing in a direction transverse to its axis and that the intermediate shaft be adapted to be moved back and forth by the second shaft bearing relative to the second gear wheel in an adjusting direction between the first position and a second position, the gear wheels meshing with one another in the second p

  • Patent number: 5067464
Abstract: A mechanically pressurized electronic fuel injector for use in internal combustion engines is actuated by the engine valve train during the injection stroke. A control solenoid is mounted to the injector and has its axis inclined with respect to the axis of the injector. A control valve passage has its axis generally coaxial with the central axis of the control solenoid. Machining of the control valve passage is accomplished through the receiving boss for the control solenoid. High pressure sealing plugs, previously required to seal orifices in the exterior surface of the injector body which were needed to provide access to drill or machine the control valve passage, are completely eliminated. The drilling and machining of the control valve passage is accomplished without drilling through the exterior surface of the injector body.

  • Patent number: 5066317
Abstract: In its broad aspect, the present invention involves a governor-controlled gas compressor system for maintaining gas pressure in a gas reservoir between a predetermined first pressure level at which said compressor commences to compress pressurized intake gas from a supercharged source thereof and a predetermined higher second pressure level at which the compressor ceases to compress said gas. The system includes a gas dryer vessel intermediate said compressor and said reservoir to effect drying of the compressed gas. The gas dryer is provided with means for exhausting purge gas therefrom only when the pressure of the purge gas exceeds the pressure of the pressurized intake gas from the supercharged source thereof.

  • Patent number: 5067088
Abstract: A matching system for use with an inserting device adapted to insert into an envelope, which may be personalized for a particular recipient, one or more personalized inserts. The matching system ensures the proper assembly of mass mail items which include personalized components, each having an alpha-numeric sequence indicator printed thereon which corresponds to a given recipient. The matching system includes a number of video cameras, each positioned to sense an alpha-numeric sequence indicator on a different component of a mail item being assembled. The video camera create electrical signals in accordance with the sensed indicators which are processed by circuitry to develop and store digital representations of the sensed indicators. A controller, consisting of a master processing unit and a number of slave processing units, receives the stored digital representations and determines from them whether the sequence indicators on the personalized components to be assembled into a mass mail item match.

  • Patent number: 5052020
Abstract: A signal amplitude shaping circuit is interposed between a signal source and a signal input terminal of a frequency modulation circuit of a typical voice radio transmitter or transceiver unit. The amplitude shaping circuit includes a high-impedance sampling circuit which senses the steady state bias voltage at the signal input terminal during periods when no data are being transmitted. Upon receipt of a transmit-enable signal, the most recently sensed bias voltage is stored and positive and negative offset voltages are generated with respect to the stored voltage. One of the offset voltages is adjusted as a precisely determined voltage with respect to the stored voltage. The other of the offset voltages is generated by inverting the first, adjusted voltage, such that the two offset voltages are offset by equal values in opposite directions.
