Patent number: 5724393Abstract: The present invention provides a method and apparatus for minimizing quantization noise in signal transmissions between modems coupled together via a digital network resulting from the performance of digital loss insertion in .mu.-law encoded signal transmissions when the receiving modem is coupled to the digital network via an analog subscriber loop. In a preferred embodiment, the minimization of quantization noise is effected by providing in a digital modem means for .mu.-law encoding and decoding of signal transmissions, means for scaling the amplitude levels of signals generated by the first modem down by a predetermined reduction factor to obtain factored signals in addition to means for performing an inversion mapping comprising a scaling of the amplitude level of the factored, .mu.-law encoded signals up by a predetermined inversion factor to obtain a gain in the amplitude level of the factored signals corresponding to the predetermined loss inserted in the amplitude levels of the transmitted .mu.Type: GrantFiled: February 17, 1995Date of Patent: March 3, 1998Assignee: Lucent Technologies Inc.Inventor: Nuri Ruhi Dagdeviren

Pointing and/or directional control device for controlling the movement and positioning of an object
Patent number: 5635926Abstract: The present invention provides a pointing and/or directional control device for controlling movement and positioning of an object in at least two dimensions which, in the preferred embodiment, forms a cursor control device for use in a computer system.Type: GrantFiled: August 2, 1994Date of Patent: June 3, 1997Inventor: Kenneth K. Patent number: 5559957Abstract: The present invention provides a method and apparatus in a data storage device of a data storage system under the control of a microprocessor for preventing a microprocessor stall upon the occurrence of a power failure during read/write operations. During normal operations, files are written to a first storage area of the data storage device where a first flag associated with each file is set when the writing of the respective file has successfully completed. Upon the occurrence of a power failure, a data storage device initialization routine is commenced upon reboot of the microprocessor. During initialization, an analysis phase is begun to generate sequences of events for at least those files not having the first flag set. The events comprise memory operations and associated data and are each re-executable upon interruption of its execution and before execution of another event without modifying results of a previous execution of the respective event.Type: GrantFiled: May 31, 1995Date of Patent: September 24, 1996Assignee: Lucent Technologies Inc.Inventor: Michael W. Patent number: 5539746Abstract: Timing control resolution between two communications devices is provided by assigning each device to one of a plurality of priorities and by transmitting an identification of this priority to the other communications device. The determination of which device is the master and which device is the slave is then resolved by comparing the received and transmitted identifications from the contending devices to a predetermined ranking of identification signals. When such identifications signals are the same, each device randomly selects an identification signal from a group of such signals. Preferably this group includes all of the identification signals except that transmitted in the immediately prior contention round. The received and transmitted identifications signals from the contending devices are then compared to the predetermined ranking of identification signals.Type: GrantFiled: April 14, 1995Date of Patent: July 23, 1996Assignee: AT&T Corp.Inventors: Gang Huang, Mai-Huong Nguyen, Jean-Jacques Werner

Patent number: 5539449Abstract: A system is disclosed for delivering audio and/or video signals to users in connection with the provision of interactive television services. Various sources of such signals are connected to a digital network, such as a packet network. Also connected to such network are control and application processors and interfaces to distribution arrangements such as cable television systems and telephone subscriber loops. Each user has a signal converter for receiving a digital signal from the distribution arrangement, converting such signal for viewing on a conventional television receiver and transmitting control packets to other elements of the system. The signal sources can include a data cache for storing recorded video and audio materials, a broadcast source for receiving broadcast signals, apparatus for composing multimedia signals from multiple sources and apparatus for running games.Type: GrantFiled: May 3, 1993Date of Patent: July 23, 1996Assignee: AT&T Corp.Inventors: Donald E. Blahut, Edward S. Szurkowski

Patent number: 5459727Abstract: The present invention overcomes the prior art limitations by dividing a coverage area into very small regions or cells. The inventive system can be built as an adjunct to a wired telecommunication system such as a PBX. Advantageously, because of the relatively small size of each cell, transceivers in the inventive system can use very low transmission power, compared with a pico-cellular communications system, to communicate with a fixed transceiver. In addition, because of the relatively short distance between the mobile handset and the fixed transceiver, the communication paths between any two transceivers are reduced and, therefore, the multipath distortion which can affect the received signals is substantially reduced.A concomitant problem normally associated with relatively small cells is the need for a switching system which can accommodate the large amount of switching or handovers required to accommodate the various mobile units as they move from one cell to another.Type: GrantFiled: July 14, 1993Date of Patent: October 17, 1995Assignee: AT&T IPM Corp.Inventor: Giovanni Vannucci

Patent number: 5344109Abstract: The present invention provides an apparatus for suspending conventional trash bags and other bags above the ground for the storage and/or disposal of a variety of items ranging from lawn refuse to recyclable cans and bottles to camping supplies and food. The apparatus comprises a support frame for securing the rim of the bag thereto and suspension arms coupled to the support frame through the use of engagement hooks for hanging the bag above the ground. The support frame comprises a first aperture for insertion of the rim of the bag therethrough, the rim wrapped around the sides of the support frame such that the bag opens through the first aperture. To protect the items inside the bag from weather and animals, the apparatus further includes a cover frame with a second aperture disposed on top of the support frame and a lid for covering the second aperture.Type: GrantFiled: March 10, 1993Date of Patent: September 6, 1994Inventor: Abel K. Hokoana, Jr.

Patent number: 5317307Abstract: The present invention discloses a method and an apparatus for power demand load leveling of a power supply driving a plurality of LED's through the use of pulse width modulation. A first modulating signal provided from a pulse width modulator is applied to a delay means for generating second, third and fourth modulating signals each delayed from the previous modulating signal by a predetermined time. The modulating signals are used to modulate control signals corresponding to four groups of associated LED's in order to permit only one group of LED's to be turned on at any one time, although more than twenty five percent of the LED's may be active at any one time. Each of the first, second, third and fourth modulating signals are applied to a different group of four groups of activation switches along with their respective control signals to enable the switches and activate an associated group of LED's.Type: GrantFiled: May 22, 1992Date of Patent: May 31, 1994Assignee: Intel CorporationInventor: Laurence C.
