  • Patent number: 5341595
Abstract: An environmental day-lit chamber for plant growth analysis having therein a growth chamber with a perforated or slotted plant supporting floor for allowing air to be forced vertically through the plant space. The transparent and frameless exterior of the chamber shell allows equalized distribution of sunlight with minimal impedance into the growth chamber. A vertical surface at the rear of the plant growth chamber forms a return air plenum for ducting air through the growth chamber and back to an air conditioning compartment beneath the growth chamber for reconditioning the air. A gasketed door at the front of the chamber shell provides reach-in capacity for entry into the plant growth chamber and expedites the ability to sealing close the growth chamber upon completion of operations therein.

  • Patent number: 5335433
Abstract: A decorative framing border or enclosure device is described. The border or enclosure device contains transparent polymer or copolymer outer framing members positioned along at least one peripheral edge of a base framing member. The composition of the base framing member can be varied to be an acrylic resin, a polystyrene, a polycarbonate, a polyester resin, a non-crystalline polyolefin, and an unsaturated polyester resin copolymerized with styrene, a corkboard, a mirrored surface, a pegboard, etc. The transparent polymer or copolymer outer framing members are adapted to accommodate appearance-altering material therein. The border or enclosure device is so constructed as to permit the changing of a picture or mat which surrounds the picture without simultaneously affecting the appearance-altering material disposed within the outer framing members by isolating the two components to opposing surfaces of the base framing member. The decorative framing border or enclosure device is also described in a kit form.

  • Patent number: 5334116
Abstract: A transfer case for a vehicle having a pair of front wheels and a pair of rear wheels and capable of all-wheel or two wheel drive has an input shaft connected to a carrier of a planetary gear differential having a ring gear connected to a first output shaft for driving a first pair of wheels and a sun gear connected to a second output shaft for driving a second pair of wheels. A clutch is provided on the planetary gear differential for selectively locking the first and second output shafts together for concurrent rotation when the planetary gear differential clutch is engaged, thereby providing all-wheel drive. A brake is provided for selectively preventing the second output shaft from rotating so that when the second output shaft brake is applied and the planetary gear differential clutch is disengaged, the first output shaft will rotate at an overdrive gear ratio relative to the rotational speed of the input shaft, thereby providing two-wheel drive at an overdrive gear ratio.

  • Patent number: 5333017
Abstract: The lens of the invention is specifically designed for use with a slit lamp biomicroscope in the examination of a patient's eye. One or more lens elements may be used with each lens element having first and second convex aspheric surfaces of revolution. The first and second aspheric surfaces are coaxial and non-symmetrical with respect to one another. The aspheric surfaces are chosen to correct astigmatic imagery of the lens, with the formed aerial image free of excessive field curvature and astigmatism. The lens is held at a distance from the patient's eye pupil corresponding to the secondary focal length of the lens. If the examined eye is emmetropic, and the lens is held in a position wherein the entrance pupil of the lens is conjugate with that of the examined eye, an image of the entrance pupil of the patient's eye will be formed at the pupil aperture of the optical system of the slit lamp biomicroscope used to observe the aerial image of the fundus as produced by the lens.

  • Patent number: 5327875
Abstract: A carburetion system for an internal combustion engine includes fuel vaporizing gun which operates as a heat exchanger with heat from the engine exhaust manifold. The system may be manually or automatically operative when hot exhaust gases from the engine heat the gun to sufficient temperatures for vaporizing the fuel. A vapor fuel shut-off valve positioned on the vapor line to the engine intake ports regulates the air to gas mixture to a ratio of between 15 and 16 to 1, for maximum combustion, increased fuel mileage and reduced emissions.

  • Patent number: 5328979
Abstract: Copolyimide compositions and methods for their preparation which are melt-processible at relative low pressures, i.e. less than 1000 psi, and are suited for laminating and molding, are described. The invention additionally encompasses copolyimide precursors, reinforced polyimide composites and laminates made from said polyimides where the composite is reinforced by fibrous materials. This is achieved by reacting at least one aromatic dianhydride where each anhydride group is located on an aromatic ring with the carbonyl units in an ortho orientation relative to one another, with at least one diamine which is capable of a transmidization reaction upon incorporation into the polyimide backbone, and with at least one other diamine which is not capable of undergoing such reaction, the diamine which is capable of undergoing the transimidization reaction being present in an amount of from about 1-50 mole percent in relation to the diamine that is not susceptable to transimidization.

  • Patent number: 5328236
Abstract: A side support device in a seat back of an automotive seat, which is mounted at one lateral frame section of a seat back frame within the seat back, is of such a structure that a motor and associated transmissions are disposed adjacently along the inward side of that one lateral frame section of seat back frame, and that a drive mechanism is also disposed along the same one lateral frame section of seat back frame for causing a pair of side support frames to be moved inwardly toward and outwardly away from each other. The drive mechanism includes a lead screw and a nut member in threaded engagement therewith, such that both of them are disposed vertically relative to the seat back frame. Thus, the motor, drive mechanism and related elements are located in the seat back at a point free from contact with the body of a passenger on the seat.

  • Patent number: 5324167
Abstract: In accordance with the present invention, there is provided a simple solution to retain the vortex in the confined position, within the fan, thereby permitting higher operational fan speeds a lower energy consumption. By using the false-bottom, which eliminates at least one vertex of the rear wall of the inlet chamber, an aerodynamic and structural asymmetry is introduced at the bottom of the inlet box, near the impeller inlet, that is sufficient to retain the impeller vortex totally within the impeller and inlet cone, and prevent its expansion into the inlet box proper, while still permitting the pre-spin effects of the parallel bladed inlet dampers at reduced load conditions.

  • Patent number: 5325101
Abstract: A cylindrical phased array antenna system capable of scanning at rates faster than the information rate of signals being received so that no information is lost by the scanning process, and without sensitivity loss due to sampling and with reduced frequency selectivity. The cylindrical phased array is comprised of the means to decompose the distribution of current on the radiator elements caused by wave incidence into component signals which are the Fourier spatial harmonics of the distribution, heterodyne means to differentially phase shift these component signals at rates exceeding 4 radians per cycle of the highest frequency present in the information content of the incident wave, and means to form multiple complex-weighted sums of the component signals. The sums are multiple time sequenced responses, each response corresponding to a different beam of sensitivity.
